好幾天前就在lastminute和ebay上找fiddler on the roof的便宜票
可是怎樣便宜都還要40鎊
讓我實在很猶豫，要是很難看就虧大了啊
事實證明，我又很好運到了Savoy Theatre
而且以學生票25買到原價55的最後一個dress circle(二樓第一排)正中間位置
心裡只有一個爽~~
第一次坐dress circle，原來視野也很好，不一定都要坐stalls
應該有不少人看過電影版的 “屋頂上的小提琴手”
其實電影版是從1964年的舞台劇版所改編的
故事背景：1905年俄國帝制時代的一個小村落，一群貧窮的猶太人在沙皇統治下過著被政
治迫害的生活。
主角：賣牛奶的父親Tevye，他的妻子Golde，五個女兒，屠夫Lazar Wolf，窮裁縫師Motel
，受過教育的革命者Perchik，別的農村的異教徒Fyedka，村裡的媒婆，乞丐，fiddler on
the roof….
故事大綱：一個在俄羅斯鄉下小村落生活很拮据的一群猶太人，以Tevye一家人為主軸，三
個女兒的婚姻挑戰猶太人的 “傳統”，怎麼在新與舊更替之間尋找一個平衡，也許是很無
奈的必須去接受這樣的改變。
一開場就是a fiddler on the roof，拉著小提琴，Tevye帶出了本劇的主題，tradition.
“A fiddler on the roof, sounds crazy, no? But here, in our village of Anatevka
, you might say every one of us is a fiddler on the roof, trying to scratch out
a pleasant, simple tune without breaking his neck. It isn’t easy.”
媒婆要把Tevye的大女兒介紹給喪妻的有錢屠夫，原本Tevye跟屠夫Lazar Wolf都談好了，
在猶太傳統中婚事是要由父親決定；但是大女兒愛的卻是窮裁縫師Motel，Tevye掙扎了很
久，也向上帝詢問了多次，最後答應了他們的婚事。為了不讓Golde發飆，還搬出了Grandm
a托夢的dream scene。
婚禮呈現方式是很猶太式的，新人必須站在以鮮花裝飾的huppah (canopy，類似一塊蓬)底
下，喝酒以及承諾要在婚後的生活繼續維持猶太傳統。最後新郎要在腳邊踩碎(打破？)玻
璃杯儀式完成。村落的人載歌載舞，跳了著名的瓶舞 (bottle dance)，就是帶著帽子頭頂
酒瓶的舞蹈，音樂也是非常猶太式的曲風。
本劇作曲家Jerry Bock本身也是猶太人，在fiddler on the roof開演幾年後說， “I fel
t a sense of quiet confidence in being able to write this score…because I was
able to draw on my own background, my own memories of music I grew up with.
I never felt the urge to research the score. I felt it was inside me.”
婚禮上Tevye跟Golde唱了 “Sunrise, Sunset”，看著女兒長大出嫁心裡的奇異感受，我
猜想應該是既欣慰又捨不得吧。
歌詞：

Act 2開始就輪到了二女兒Hodel跟Perchik，Hodel後來答應了Perchik的求婚，在Perchik
被流放到西伯利亞的時候她依然堅決的要跟著過去。此時Tevye身為父親又陷入了掙扎，但是
最後還是同意了Hodel的請求。
(不知道有沒有記錯，到最後怎麼聽到了Hodel跟Perchik死掉的消息@@)
在Hodel跟Perchik互訂終身的時候被Tevye撞見，Tevye原本不同意，但是Hodel告訴父親他
們相愛。Tevye回家後對妻子Golde唱起了 “Do you love me?”
Golde said,
Do I love you?
For twenty-five years I've washed your clothes
Cooked your meals, cleaned your house
Given you children, milked the cow
After twenty-five years, why talk about love right now?
Do I love him?
For twenty-five years I've lived with him
Fought him, starved with him
Twenty-five years my bed is his
If that's not love, what is?
最後Tevye說，it’s nice to know that (after 25 years).
在Hodel跟Perchik離開後，Motel的裁縫店引進了新的機器，三女兒Chava跟臨莊非猶太教
徒的青年Fyedka也向Tevye提出了要結婚的事情，在前兩個女兒的婚事中Tevye雖然每次都
陷入掙扎，雖然反對，可是總是會說服自己，on the other hand…..如何如何…。不過這
次，Tevye很難接受，他的獨白到最後，there’s no other hand, I SAID NO! 結果隔天
就聽到了Chava跟Fyeka自行結婚的消息，Tevye氣的不認這個女兒。
村莊後來受到沙皇騎兵的破壞，猶太人即將被強迫驅離，不知何去何從的他們收拾了行李
，屠夫Lazar Wolf要去芝加哥投靠哥哥，Tevye跟Golde帶著兩個小女兒要到紐約，Chava跟
Fyeka也來跟父母告別，最終還是約定了在紐約見面。
每當Tevye陷入天人交戰時刻，fiddler on the roof就會出現，拉著有點哀愁的音符，生
活就像是屋頂上的小提琴手那樣的搖擺不定。啊忘了說fiddler還蠻帥的！
這齣劇在紐約也會受到歡迎應該是因為在真實生活中，為數不少的猶太人遷移到了愛麗絲
島，融入了美國這個大熔爐。在紐約的猶太家庭出了不少的20世紀有名的作曲家，像是
Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers,
Oscar Hammerstein, Dorothy Fields, Ldonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim….等，
不過其中我知道的只有Stephen Sondheim這個鬼才….囧
很顯然的猶太音樂已經滲入了美國流行樂，也是音樂劇不可或缺的要素。
Stephen Sondheim once said that “if you can hum it you’ve probably heard it
before”—the fact that we find so much music by Jewish writers so hummable is
surely because, wherever we live in the Western world, we are likely to be
familiar with Jewish music.
旁邊的英國太太在interval的時候問我有沒有enjoy the show，告訴我這是她第三還第四
次看這齣劇，每次都會有些許不同，以往沒有像這次的dream scene如此逼真。我開玩笑的
問，在看戲的中場時間吃冰淇淋也是英國人的tradition嗎？她就笑說，那是因為通常吧檯
人會太多，沒有辦法讓每個客人get served，所以才發展出在戲院裡面販賣冰淇淋，久而
久之也變成一種文化。嗯….下次我也要！
