In the past, African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) and African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana) were both listed as the same species and was a Vulnerable species. recently research shows the habitats and distributions are different for both species, and they rarely overlap. the population of African forest elephant has declined 86% in the past 31 years and is now listed as Critically Endangered; the number of African savanna elephant has dropped 60% in the last 50 years, and it is now listed as Endangered.

即刻參與聯署,促請港府杜絕象牙買賣,拯救大象啦:wwf.org.hk/elephants

Elephants are in crisis.
Every day, an average of three or four African elephants are killed every hour, solely because of their tusks. Ivory-seeking poachers are aware of the lucrative rewards of their deadly trade and are equipped with advanced weapons and techniques; nowadays poachers track elephants from helicopters and target their prey from above, making it virtually impossible for the elephants to escape. As a consequence, Africa’s elephant population has been drastically reduced, dropping from between three and five million at the beginning of the last century to less than 470,000 today. With this spike in poaching, elephant numbers continue to plummet every hour. If we don’t stop elephant poaching now, Africa will face a severe ecosystem imbalance in the near future.
