How does the Paralympic classification system work?

Like the Olympics, the Paralympics are taking place a year after originally planned because of the delay caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), there are 2550 male and 1853 female athletes taking part in Games, which run from August 24 to September 5.

"Classification is the cornerstone of the Paralympic Movement, it determines which athletes are eligible to compete in a sport and how athletes are grouped together for competition,' says the IPC.

What makes a Paralympian?

Paralympians are grouped together by the "degree of activity limitation resulting from the impairment," according to the IPC.

As different sports require different physical demands, the IPC says the classification process "aims to minimize the impact of the impairment on athletes' performance" so that their athletic prowess is showcased.

What do the classes in each sport mean?

The class groups athletes with similar athletic limitations so that they can compete to similar levels, but does not necessarily have to solely group athletes with the same eligible impairment.

Because some impairments progress over time, athletes can change classification over time.

🧐 The lack of scepticism deployed on social media with regards to fitness is quite bonkers. If you found out someone who had been advising you on how to get to rich had been handed $1mil to start their portfolio, would their advice feel as relevant to you?

I know plenty of people in good shape who haven’t got a fucking clue why or how other than that it requires some effort 🤷🏻♂️ The reason they’ve got a bigger chest than their other friend who works out? “Oh, my chest workouts are INNNSANNNEE” and not “I’ve got a large rib cage & good insertions + I train pushing movements often”. Thankfully most of them aren’t coaches, but there are plenty online selling their magical programs or providing advice with no context.

I could have easily been one of them. Once we hit puberty, my siblings & I were all slim and had solid intuitive eating habits having grown up in an essentially sugar-free, junkfood-free household. I was just a “hard-gainer”, not helped by preferring a nutrient-dense diet. Eating enough pizzas and spending enough hours in the gym would probably have given me a physique that convinced people I knew everything necessary to help them. In reality it would have equipped me to help no one other than myself (and barely).

BUT, what if you were talking to a financial advisor who had helped dozens of people with your risk appetite and disposable income build a strong investment portfolio? That might be someone worth taking advice from...

Likewise with a coach who has shown an ability to get results with either a wide range of clients or a large number of clients with a similar profile to yourself. Keep in mind that coaches who only train the genetically gifted (like athletes) end up with a comically poor perspective on what the general population need and their $19.99 programs will probably display that. New mums taking training advice from some 22 year old failed college athlete turned callisthenics advocate might want to re-think.

Genetics aren’t to be used as a means of discrediting someone’s achievements or justifying someone’s lack thereof, but they should not be discounted when assuming someone’s personal results warrant taking their advice.

Juliette and I met a couple of years back when we were both exploring performance opportunities in Hong Kong, but we are actually both from Toronto. I knew she was talented in many areas of performance and recently, we talked about the idea of doing a duet and this one was the chosen one haha
High School Musical was something that I actually connected with a lot while I was in school as I was also an athlete who sings. I still remember the year I sang a duet from HSM at the school talent show and it was also the day of my Track & Field competition. Fortunately, my events were earlier in the day and I made it back to school in time (I was wearing my team jersey during the performance haha).

Started towerrunning sport back in year 2017 in KL Tower International Towerthon Challenge. With a month of preparation, I won the "Fastest Malaysian" title and 2nd Overall on this event.
With the prize money I won from the event, I used it to travel overseas for Towerrunning event. I traveled to Beijing, Shanghai, Osaka, and Hong Kong in year 2017. I am so glad to meet up with so many amazing athlete especially Piotr Lobodzinski from Poland and Suzy Walsham from Australia.
Being able to race with them is always a pleasure as I got to learned from them, from the experienced one on how they train, the techniques they use during the race. I than set a goal to achieve World No. 1 in 3 years time.
