Speaking at the Counter Wildlife Trafficking Partnership Forum this morning on what one person can really do in terms of inspiring change, maximizing reach, mobilizing support, and sustaining movements in order to tackle wildlife trafficking and preserve our environment.
Extremely honoured to share the panel with Venerable Maha Sompong Talaputto, Buddhist Dharma Teacher, Justice Michael Wilson from the Hawaii Supreme Court, Le Thi Thu Thuy from the Vietnam chamber of commerce and industry, and John Roberts, Conservation Director of Minor Hotel Group.
✨ Main takeaways ✨
- influencers, celebrities and content creators have power to influence and inspire change through their platforms and personal choices by making responsible choices and leading by example.
- religious leaders can be powerful influencers to dispel myths that wild animal parts have magical or spiritual powers.
- businesses and tourism sector can do more to promote sustainable activities and environmentally friendly holidays for the public in order to raise awareness and promote conservation efforts.
- the rule of law is still a powerful vehicular for change and should be used more effectively in order to bring about climate justice and action.
- real and decisive action needs a collaborative effort from all sectors, private, public and government.
*Don’t limit yourself to a label or put yourself in a box before you take action. Everyone has the power to make a difference.

Today is #EarthDay, and this year marks its 50th anniversary.
This year’s celebration happens amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Singaporeans, like people across the world, are staying home in an effort to stop the spread of this disease. But thanks to technology, we can still enjoy the breathtaking beauty of our shared home through virtual tours (check out this article for some beautiful examples: https://go.gov.sg/nddgec) and amazing tools like Google Earth.
As glum as things seem now, COVID-19 will eventually pass. But the wicked problem of climate change will still be with us, and it will be even harder to tackle. It is sobering to think that if we fail to slow down climate change, these virtual tours may be all future generations have to remind them of what was lost because we did not take action sooner.
Singapore cannot stop climate change by ourselves. It needs a global effort. But we will do our bit. Each of us must do our bit too, through small and sustainable steps, for example by wasting less food, choosing more energy efficient options, and recycling more. Let us all do our part to protect our Earth. – LHL

Filmmaker Eunice Tan shared with me this interesting video that she produced on “Flies & Farming in Singapore”.
Her film on the Citizen Farm features urban farming and using farming systems that are sustainable and create the least amount of waste. For example, they use a unique fertiliser made from the poop 💩 of black soldier flies which are bred at Insectta, an urban insect farm located just next door. These flies feed on food waste, converting it into a natural fertiliser instead of it ending up in the incinerator.
Eunice’s video is one of two Singaporean finalists in the UN Global Youth Video Competition. The other video, by Woo Qiyun and Marissa Yeo Le Ping, is about Kausmo, a restaurant that reduces food waste by using overstocked and oddly-shaped fruits and vegetables that have been “filtered” from supermarket shelves for aesthetic reasons: youtu.be/bR7Z9pRbRyk. Each view of their videos counts as one vote, so do lend them your support!
As I said at the National Day Rally, climate change may seem abstract and distant, but we all have a part to play, taking practical steps to reduce our CO2 emissions. Glad to see our young people leading the way on this! – LHL
