🎉🎉🎉“Samsara Ep1.” Puts Taiwan On the Map! New Media Artist Hsin-Chien Huang Wins the Top Awards of SXSW🏆🏆🏆🥳
The awards ceremony of the American international film festival, South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW), will be held in the morning on March 20, 2021. The latest VR production created by artist Hsin-Chien Huang has taken the festival by storm and bring home the prestigious “Jury Awards” in the virtual cinema competition category. “Samsara Ep. 1” is the first VR production from Taiwan to receive such honor and has put the creativity of Taiwan on the map!
In the acceptance speech, Huang mentioned that he would like to thank the jury of SXSW for the recognition and encouragement. It was absolutely his honor to win this award. He’d also like to thank the full support from the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan 文化部, the Taiwan Creative Content Agency 文化內容策進院 Taiwan Creative Content Agency , and Kaohsiung Film Archive 高雄市電影館 VR 體感劇院 VR FILM LAB to make it possible to complete the work. Finally, he thanked all the crew members of the production for letting the world see how amazing the VR production from Taiwan.
The story background of “Samsara” is set as a timeline when humans completely destroyed the environment on earth and begin to go on a quest through space for hundreds of years. People try to immigrant to a new planet, so they redesign the DNA to adapt to a new environment and evolve into a new life form. However, after so many years, people gradually realize that it is never possible to find a new planet to settle. They merely keep returning to the original earth they have damaged in a different era, in a different life form, as an endless circle of reincarnation.
The plot involves many different social issues, including ecology, technology, natural resource, and war, and calls on viewers to reflect themselves with a profound philosophical perspective. Moreover, several concepts of embodied cognition are used in the story to make viewers transform into different animals, including Taiwan’s indigenous species, such as Taiwan Blue Magpie and Formosan Black Bear, to interact with the scenes. “Samsara Ep.1” also features the latest somatosensory technology, including the 4Dviews shooting techniques by the Industrial Technology Research Institute and Taiwan Creative Content Agency, with 48 4DV-EX-Z cameras and a digital shooting system composed of a high-sensitivity 4 million-pixel full-color CCD sensor. “Samsara Ep.1” is able to be taken from an omnidirectional view without blind spots and be shot without any blind spots to create the ultimate immersive experience.
The first SXSW was held in Austin, Texas in 1987. This long-standing international event is held around March every year ever since. The festival features various themes, such as films, music, VR/AR, art and games, etc. The SXSW is the world’s largest event for creative content. Many creators and brand owners in the fields will not miss out on the festival. Therefore, the festival has become a trial balloon, attracting hundreds of bands and film crews to participate, estimated over 400,000 people joining the event. This year, the festival has changed the event to an online form for the first time since the pandemic is raging as before. All screening events, industry matchmaking, seminars will be carried out via its own online platform, SXSW Online, without difficulty. It has made it possible for all the artists, creators, and professionals to break down the physical borders and participate in this magnificent annual event together.
There are nine productions in total nominated in the Virtual Cinema Competition category this year, with teams from the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Poland, Australia, South Korea, and so on. This is the first time that “Samsara Ep.1” has competed in the international film festival and has achieved a great result with much international recognition. This is also the first time for Taiwanese production to receive an award from the SXSW competition. The full version of “Samsara” is expected to start the global tour in the second half of the year. Huang said that “Samsara” would return to Taiwan for its Asian premiere and ask the fans in Taiwan to stay tuned!

大家晚安,有小小好消息跟大家分享。
(The English version is below.)
Robert

Hi there,
Here is good news to share with you. My film NARSTALGIA, which is a project concerning eco-grief and solastalgia in the Arctic, has been officially selected by ARFF Paris International Film Awards 2020 in the ARFF Global Awards & Best Student Film. It's also been awarded as the Best Experimental Short Film in London Independent Film Awards 2020 and might be shown in the physical screening during the festival next year.
Besides, our team has converted the film mentioned above to a projection mapping project, which has been official selected as the finalist of the Tokyo International Projection Mapping Awards, and it will be shown in the screening at Tokyo Big Sight on 14th November Saturday with many Japanese and international digital artist.
May I deeply appreciate all the excellent works of my team members: Yo-Bi, Sam Cho, Andrew, and Bo-Yu, as well as the significant support from my lovely tutors: Debbie and Yiyun, my colleagues: Aco and Ruo, the interviewee: Þórhildur、Hjalti, and Pilotfly TW.
Most importantly, thanks very much to all the people in my life helping me and the project.
This 8-minutes short film has a such highly international filmmaking process. A Taiwanese director with his team filmed in Iceland and Hokkaido, Japan, did the research, pre-production, and post-production in the UK, and the research itself is related to the issues in Greenland, Iceland, and other areas in the Arctic.
They might be not top-class awards in the industry, yet it’s just a tiny step of mine to be an outstanding international film director and artist, and I will definitely keep collecting those precious stories and value in the world, trying to tell those stories in a creative way. Again, Cheers!
Sincerely,
Robert

Congratulations Cxpturing Souls and glad to be a part of your Lockdown Facetime series
Amanda is a local conceptual and portrait photographer, who goes by the name Cxpturing Souls. She is a self-taught photographer, and her main focus is conceptual photography and doing empowerment projects. Inspired by her projects and passion, we reached out to her to talk a little more about herself.
1) What are the challenges that you faced when you started out as a female photographer?
“As a female photographer, it was a challenge to build a name for myself. I have been looked down upon and treated unfairly by other photographers and my peers. I believe that women in any industry would understand and have had some experience where they are not being treated equally to their male colleagues. Another challenge is comparing myself with other creatives. I have always struggled with self doubt and self confidence when it comes to my work. I would find myself comparing my work with other creatives and that would tear me down and cause burn outs. I've come to realise that all of us work at our own pace and it's not fair to compare my journey to someone elseʼs.”
2) What was the inspiration behind 'Through the Screen (MCO Series)', and were there any challenges as compared to regular photography?
“When MCO was implemented back in March, I found myself having creative blocks. I was so used to having the freedom of going out for shoots and seeing people in person that it killed my motivation to do anything. A few weeks into MCO, there were other photographers who were experimenting with doing photoshoot via video calls and it intrigued me to experiment as well. The idea gave me an opportunity to kickstart a new series “Through The Screen” which is about staying connected with people around the world but through a screen. With the technology we have now, I was able to conduct these shoots through different video call apps with people from different countries; from Malaysia to Australia to UK.”
“Of course there will be challenges. It was my first time doing a photoshoot where I am physically far away from the subject. It was challenging to direct the model poses and also give direction of how the device they were using should be placed. Some of the models didnʼt have a tripod for their devices and we had to come up with a makeshift tripod using books or tables or chairs. The most challenging part of doing the photoshoots was the internet connection. There were times the connection was good with no interference but there were times where we had trouble connecting and it would result in pixelated photos.”
“Overall, this new experience was one I will remember. During a difficult time like this, it gave me the opportunity to connect with old friends and talk to people who are far away. Even though itʼs not something I would normally do, but I learned a lot from this experience.”
3) If you could go back in time and tell your younger self something, what would it be?
“I would tell myself not let other peopleʼs opinions of me affect me and change who I am to fit who they want me to be. There will be times where peopleʼs opinions do cloud my judgement but I will try to take a step back and analyse the situation and remind myself of who I truly am. Itʼs important to stay true to yourself and remember who you are especially when most of your life is on social media.”
4) How would you encourage other young women to follow their passions?
“I would constantly encourage the people around me whether men or women to pursue their passions. The times have changed and it's time to break the stereotype that the male dominated industry is meant only for males. It’s time to face the facts that girls can do it too."

Vlog about your travel? Why not?
When taking photos is too mainstream... You just gotta be creative and make a damn video out of the tour. It's been 10 years since I was last here in this beloved city :)
1. Once again, tell me your thoughts in the comment section below?
2. Do you like this kind of vlogging? Or do you prefer the previous ones?
3. Who do you think I was buying the gifts for?
4. BONUS: I challenge you to make a 'video response' to this vlog, recording your hometown or places you traveled to :)
Like, share and subscribe. Really is a motivation for me to do further vlogging :DD
