📰 Taiwan ‘corpse repairers’ recount heartbreaking moments after fatal train crash
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A group of volunteer mortuary cosmetologists is working around the clock to bring dignity to those who lost their lives in the deadly derailment that killed 50 in eastern Taiwan on Friday (April 2).
More than 100 members of the “76 Monks” have mobilized to reconstruct corpses in the aftermath of Taiwan's worst rail disaster in decades. Founded after the deadly plane crash in Penghu in 2014, the non-profit organization, which comprises morticians and people with related backgrounds, is dedicated to restoring the bodies of those killed in major accidents.
Friday’s train collision near Taroko Gorge in Hualien presents a challenge for these “repairers,” as many bodies retrieved from the mangled train carriages are badly damaged, some beyond recognition. “It's unbearable at the scene, families of the victims were crying so hard they fainted,” said Chen Hsiu-chiang (陳修將), one of those involved in the task.
The work is heart-wrenching, even for the most experienced mortuary cosmetologists, when they have to handle the corpses of victims as young as four years old. “Some volunteers broke down in mourning for those who perished at such a young age and paused to have a good cry before they could resume work,” Newtalk quoted 76 Monks spokesperson Angela Wang (王薇君) as saying.
Reconstructing deformed bodies requires great skill and materials such as cosmetics, prostheses, plaster, and artificial skin. As of Saturday (April 3), 10 bodies had been repaired, with the rest expected to be completed within a week, reported UDN.
The good Samaritans are asking nothing in return as donations pour in to support their charitable deeds. The proceeds will be used to purchase equipment needed for future missions, the organization said in a Facebook post.
Each member of the 76 Monks has their own way of dealing with the stress from the job. Chen said he spends two to three hours in a car to calm himself and find peace of mind.
🙏 Life is full of uncertainty. May the departed souls rest in peace;
May the living be safe. It is time for solidarity as the nation grieves.

Abstract:
The book of Leviticus is by far the most quoted in rabbinic literature such as the Mishna or the Talmud, while it has been marginalized in the Christian tradition. Nevertheless, scholars of both traditions have again become highly interested in it for some decades now. As shown by many recent publications, the book is thoroughly studied for textual, literary, historical and reception aspects.
It has often been said and written that the text of Leviticus is stable in comparison to many other books of the Hebrew Bible, and that its Greek translation is quite literal. Yet, the text of Leviticus continues to raise questions, not only regarding its content and textual witnesses, but also its interpretation, history and reception. The third international colloquium of the Dominique Barthélemy Institute, held in Fribourg in October 2015, aimed to bring together some specialists of the text of Leviticus in order to advance research on its textual witnesses and the aforementioned topics.
The articles collected in this book reflect the width of current research. They deal with the witnesses to the text of Leviticus in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Masoretic Text, the Samaritan Pentateuch and the Septuagint. They also study the book’s Hebrew editing; its relation to other books such as Joshua, Luke-Acts and Flavius Josephus; and the challenge of its translation, with a case study in French.

With 21 years in the business, they may have not been the very first but @granmontewines have been integral to the a Thai wine boom these past decades. A family business, quite literally; sisters Nikki (Wine maker), Mimi (Marketing Director), father, Visooth (CEO) and mother, Sakuna (President) all have their parts and hands in the drive and development of the business, there's no conglomerate backing or hidden business men/women pulling the strings, this is a family business in every aspect and an absolute splendor to experience the remarkable hard work, of growing & producing top quality Thai wine.
With international and local wine awards aplenty, the wines may surprise and delight even the biggest wine snobs. Cynicism is a challenge which the family have perpetually faced along with questions in regard to price vs value. Thai produce doesn't automatically equate to cheap, but any doubts may be answered once seeing and discovering for oneself.
Visitors to the winery in Khao Yai will be able to enjoy guided tours through the vineyards by Nikki herself, while breathing in that incredibly crisp countryside air. Complimentary Bicycles are available to cruise around the luscious green property but beware of being in excess awe of the spectacular mountain to vineyard and riding into a small ravine.
Best yet, stay overnight at their Wine Cottage and wake up to those views every morning. Hungry? Walk or ride down to the VinCotto restaurant by the vineyards to enjoy indoor or al fresco dining with comfort classics of pastas, pizzas, salads or stews. Between meals, why not browse at the wine shop to taste and try their grape-driven artisanal products or sit in their wine bar next door and order a wine tasting flight with cheeses.
In the evening, we were lucky enough to enjoy the chilly air for an intimate barbecue on the back porch with the family. This space may be booked and arranged by special request. Quite simply, a fun, educational, and wonderfully relaxed weekend that makes you feel a million miles from the city and now is the best time to go! @granmontewines are currently offering discounts rates inclusive of tours until the end of the year, yes! 0928067755 @ GranMonte Vineyard and Winery

Chwee Kueh (water rice cake) is a breakfast dish commonly eaten in Singapore. The rice cake is made with rice flour and water steamed in a metal mould, giving it its signature shape. It is topped with chai poh (preserved radish) that is flavoured with garlic and soya sauce before being fried in oil. Chilli sauce is usually served on the side.
For my challenge, I visited a specialist Chwee Kueh shop at Taman Jurong to get 100 Chwee Kueh to destroy. The shop is run entirely by an old man who has been making Chwee Kueh for decades and has been at this location for 5 years. His Chwee Kueh is very affordably priced at 5/10 for $1.50/$3. There are more famous and Michelin-awarded places out there, but I want to help less well-known and legacy businesses.
The rice cakes on their own are actually rather bland and light, which is normal for rice cakes as they are meant to act as vessels for the toppings. The preserved radish were very savoury and barely sweet, unlike some of the more famous ones. As they were practically deep fried in oil, it was a very oily and cloying topping. The chilli compensated the heaviness of the topping well, with a lightly spicy and heavily smoky flavour.
At 100 rice cakes weighing around 5KG, it was quite a challenge to complete as the oily and heavy preserved radish got to me quick. While adding the chilli sauce helped, I still had to push myself to complete the challenge. As always, if you order a reasonable portion of 5 or 10, this would be a hearty breakfast to start the day with. Do support local businesses and this old man by visiting his Chwee Kueh shop!

Mee Rebus is a Southeast Asian noodle dish made with yellow noodles and a bunch of sides drenched in a thick brown gravy. The gravy is slightly sweet and spicy, usually made with shallots, lemongrass and galangal among other Asian-style aromatics, resulting in a deep and complex sauce. Standard toppings include hard-boiled eggs, bergedil (potato cake) and sliced chillies.
At Rahim Muslim Food, a specialist Mee Rebus stall that is currently manned by a 3rd generation chef, they offer a decades-long refined Mee Rebus affordably priced at $4-$6 depending on your choice of toppings. They uniquely ladle peanut sauce, which is commonly served with Satay, over your plate of Mee Rebus.
For my challenge, I ordered 7 portions of noodles, together with bergedil, sliced green chillies, poached chicken, hard-boiled eggs, fresh limes, bean sprouts and shredded lime leaves. These were all drenched in the 2 different sauces and topped with cilantro. Mee Rebus usually does not disappoint, but Rahim Muslim Food elevated themselves with their take on gravy and the addition of satay sauce. The gravy was thickened well, supposedly through the use of potatoes, and had sweet, savoury and spicy notes that were brightened by the limes. The peanut sauce was expectedly very nutty and had pleasant crunchy bits of peanuts throughout. Mixing the sauces together added an additional nutty dimension to the flavour profile that was surprisingly delicious.
This was a straightforward challenge and part of my ongoing effort to promote local food with a rich heritage. If you have a craving for Mee Rebus, you will not go wrong with Rahim Muslim Food’s take on this local dish.
