Le ministre adjoint des Affaires étrangères Harry Tseng a présidé hier une cérémonie de don d’équipements de protection individuelle à la ville française de #Colmar et à la Croix-Rouge française.

Ce don destiné au personnel soignant placé en première ligne face à la pandémie de #Covid19 est le fruit d’une coopération entre les secteurs public et privé des deux pays.

Le ministre adjoint Tseng a souligné l’importance de cette coopération public-privé dans la relation entre les deux pays, rappelant la récente ouverture de notre bureau de représentation à Aix-en-Provence ainsi que le soutien apporté par le gouvernement et le parlement français à la participation de #Taiwan à l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (#OMS), entre autres exemples.

Le maire de Taoyuan Cheng Wen-tsan et le directeur du Bureau Français de Taipei - 法國在台協會 Jean-François Casabonne-Masonnave étaient présents, alors que le maire de Colmar, Éric Straumann, un représentant de la Croix-Rouge française, Jean-Pierre Esterni, et notre représentant en #France François Wu le directeur de notre bureau en #Provence Chi-chih Shin ont pris part virtuellement à l’événement.

MOFA Deputy Minister Harry Ho-jen Tseng presided over a ceremony yesterday to mark the donation of #PPE to the historic French city of #Colmar and to the Croix-Rouge française (French Red Cross).

The donation, which will go to front-line workers to help them in the fight against the #COVID19 pandemic, was facilitated through cooperation between the public and private sector in both countries.

Deputy Minister Tseng affirmed this kind of public-private cooperation in the relationship between the two countries, pointing to the recent establishment of the Taiwan office in #AixEnProvence and the French government and parliament’s support for Taiwan’s participation in the #WorldHealthOrganization as other examples.

Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan and Director of the Bureau Français de Taipei - 法國在台協會 Jean-François Casabonne-Masonnave, were in attendance, while the mayor of Colmar, Éric Straumann, a representative from the French Red Cross, Jean-Pierre Esterni, our representative in #France François Wu and the head of our #Provence office, Chi-chih Shin took part in the event virtually.

Alors qu’il s’apprête à prendre ses fonctions à #Taiwan, l’ambassadeur d’Haïti Hervé Denis a présenté hier au ministre des Affaires étrangères Joseph Wu une copie des lettres de créance destinées à la présidente Tsai Ing-wen. Les deux hommes ont échangé à cette occasion sur des questions d’intérêt commun pour les deux pays.

Au nom du peuple et du gouvernement taïwanais, le ministre Joseph Wu a transmis ses remerciements au président haïtien Jovenel Moïse pour son soutien de longue date à la participation de Taiwan aux organisations internationales.

L’ambassadeur Hervé Denis a souligné que Taiwan est un allié important d’Haïti et a remercié le pays pour les projets qu’il mène en Haïti en faveur du bien-être de son peuple.

Ambassador Hervé Denis of #Haiti presented a copy of his credentials to MOFA Minister Joseph Wu yesterday as he prepares to take up his post in #Taiwan. The pair also exchanged opinions on issues of common concern for both countries.

Minister Wu conveyed thanks to Haitian President Jovenel Moïse for his long-term support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations on behalf of the people and the government of Taiwan.

Ambassador Denis described Taiwan as an important ally of Haiti and thanked the country for carrying out projects in Haiti to promote its people's welfare.

This has been an unprecedented period of intense anxiety and disruption across all industries, and the arts especially had taken a heavy toll. Hence, I am elated to lend my voice to vOilah! France Singapore Festival 2020, and to be a part of this cultural heritage exchange that thrives between our two countries. Although grand festival events and red carpet may no longer be possible, but nothing should stop us from sharing the charm and finesse of French culture and arts.

I currently reside in Paris, having moved here three years ago. We too experienced a two months country-wide confinement from March to May this year, during which only essential shops were allowed to remain open, namely, supermarkets and boulangeries. A week into the lockdown, President Macron announced that not only was food for the body important to the people, food for the soul was equally critical to a civilization. What followed was that bookshops were given the permission to resume business, as long as rules of social distancing were observed. This was what struck me the most, that when life is stripped to the bare minimum, bread and books are all we need. After all, “culture is what remains, when everything else is forgotten” French statesman Edouard Herriot once wrote. Indeed, in the most robust economy, the market provides everyone with everything, except the power to determine what people should value. It is thus heartening to see culture held at such high regards, especially in times of crisis.

Back in our literary and philosophical past, only a small percentage of people had the privilege to be exposed to great traditions of arts and intellect. Now we are fortunate to live in a world where the cultural divide is no longer as deep, where global communities come together on creative platforms, where thinkers reunite for meaningful dialogues. Culture should travel, even when we can’t.

De gustibus non est disputandum. I look forward to the calendar of great works in this year’s vOilah! Festival, and meeting all of you through the upcoming online activities.

Let’s safeguard the future of our arts and innovation together.
