7th April 2020. The last day at the office before #circuitbreaker kicks in. I packed the last of my work gear and say a little farewell to my desk and my studio. The 24-inch displays looked a little forlorn without their buddy, the 16-inch MacBook Pro. And the studio was deathly quiet, knowing we won’t be back till May. It was also quiet because it is soundproof lah.

But we all need to adjust to a new normal. Hopefully this passes soon and we can pick up the pieces of our lives again. And maybe give each other a hug and a handshake once more.

Till then, see you all from my home. It is a little crowded in my household at the moment. But it is a picture of calm orderliness. Pudding, our budgie, has never seen us home so much, and is chirping excitedly, as if asking us if we want to play.

I have one special needs firstborn who doesn’t have her Day Activity Centre to go to this month. One son who is starting a new course. One youngest daughter on HBL. And then the Wife who is working diligently at the desk I set up for her — my soulmate who lovingly and patiently put up with a husband who just hauled half his work gear home. And a very good helper who is taking good care of us.

There is some irritability, some nagging, some jostling for personal space. But there is also lots of love, joy and laughter under this roof.

Gosh, I hope we don’t strangle each other by Day Two.

The little sister gave a forlorn look when she asked me "Mama, why is it that Papa cannot come for my school event again today..."

Well, at least you have Mama at all of your events, right? Papa is working hard and didn't even come home last night, not to mention being able to make it this morning for your parent-and-child musical event. I was reminded of what a privilege it is for me to be a stay-at-home mum so I have all these opportunities to witness the kids' growing up milestones, attend their school events and let them be assured that at least one of us will always be there.

We spent a few hours of quality bonding time today and I could see how much it meant to her. We had another school carnival event last week but I had the baby brother and elder sister with me that day, and it's just different from having one-on-one time with each child.

We sang, we held hands, we hugged, we danced, we drew, we talked and we found time to reconnect. It's really so important to find time to understand each child better, listen to their heartfelt sharing and let them know you care.

We had an upsetting moment when she was unable to introduce her artwork when the teacher asked her to. I tried encouraging her and asked her to speak up and describe in simple terms of what she drew, alas she started tearing up uncontrollably. That was when I saw it. It wasn't that she couldn't do it - sure, she might have felt shy, afraid or overwhelmed by her peers - but it was more of she didn't want to let me down. She wanted me to feel proud of her, she wanted to meet my expectations, she wanted me to think that she did well. And when she thinks that can't be fulfilled, she felt devastated.

I let her take a moment to cool down and wash up while gathering my own thoughts for a minute too. Then I walked to her, gave her a big hug, told her her best effort was good enough for me and that we'll try to practise at home together. Most importantly, I repeated the words in her ear "I'm so, so proud of you, my dear."

Remember I am in this learning journey with you. Together. I make mistakes too and I fail so often. But I hope you are proud of me too, as I am of you. Always. ❤
