Academic freedom and freedom of speech are among the important #sharedvalues that bind together the United States and Taiwan as friends and partners. The situation in Hong Kong highlights just how precious those freedoms are. AIT and National Central Library co-hosted “Reading for Freedom Series of Events” last week and we want to thank the more than 400 participants who joined our series of events on August 20 and 21, with a special thanks to our speakers Lin Fei-Fan, Zhang Gou-Cheng, Lam Wing-Kee, Lin Xi, Jou Yi-Cheng and Ming Chu-Cheng who shared their personal experience and insights regarding reading, freedom, and democracy. As AIT’s CAO Luke Martin said, “We believe democracy, freedom and human rights are not only universal values, but the foundation for Taiwan’s economic and political development.” No matter how difficult things get, we can always find comfort in reading. #ReadingforFreedom
