The world really has evolved several stages since 2020, and also since the beginning of my career- and that’s the beauty of it all. Nothings permanent, everything changes and newer, more exciting things keep coming into the mix.
Tomorrow my baby will turn 6 months. What a massive milestone, for her and for myself. As I am learning everyday to be a better mother, I am also learning to become a stronger me. I have been wanting to update fans and friends on how I am doing - and yet every time I try, I just feel like “oh gosh. Where do I even start?” And before that thought process is over, I would be busy either feeding my baby, changing a diaper, soothing her, or putting her to sleep.
The first few months of my baby’s life felt like it flew by so quickly yet at the same time pre-baby feels like a lifetime ago - everything in my world has shifted. My whole focus was her - I was breastfeeding, (which, by the way, is HEAPS harder than giving birth), making sure she’s eating well, sleeping well, and pooping well. And, understandably, paranoid about any kind of germs in the house. There was no difference between day and night, it’s just wake time and sleep time. It made no difference for me what day of the week it was, what weather it was, what’s happening with my industry, or with the world other than the daily Covid news, because I just needed to stay home make sure that my little newborn is far far far away from covid. I barely saw friends, and hadn’t eaten in a restaurant for north of half a year. As I took care of her, I barely had time to wash my own face, go to the bathroom, or sleep for a long stretch of time. I also didn’t have enough breastmilk, so I would sit there and try to pump the life out of me, just so I could provide half of a meal for my baby. I tried everything - but I do know that low supply isn’t uncommon. So- as glamorous as mom life can appear to be on social media, don’t be fooled. It’s humbling, but it’s also life-altering and the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.
Emotionally, I’ve been so over the moon and happy. I enjoy spending time with my newborn baby, she makes me giggle and smile - even though I wish my mother was here to share old baby stories of me, and experience all of this together. But having a daughter really makes you feel more connected to your mother on a completely different level - I just know she’s happy and proud of me from up above. I’ve taught her how to semi-feed herself, how to fall asleep by herself, teaching her still how to roll, sit, and semi-stand (crazy!!), and I’ve played her tunes on my guitar like she’s the only fan in my fan club.
I also consider myself blessed that I never had issues with postpartum depression, despite suffering from mommy’s wrist. I had an amazing relationship with my 陪月/月嫂 who helped me immensely more than words can say. I have not been able to see my side of the family for over a year, but I’m blessed to have amazing in-laws and fellow mommy friends to share experiences with.
Nothing has been easy, but I am the most grateful for my husband - he was always by my side when I needed him. We change diapers together, we bathe our daughter, we sing to her together, and read bedtime stories to her together. I can safely say, that I’m MUCH happier than when I was towards the end of my music label contract. There have been some dark years there.
Hitting 6 months is a big deal for me. I can safely pat myself on my back and reminisce on THE single most biggest achievement of my life, my daughter. Obviously, 6 months is not long in the grand scheme of things, ie. her entire life ahead, but it is a big milestone for me mentally, and finally I feel it’s time to really focus on my own personally healing. I completely lost myself in taking care of her, and yet I felt the most alive and the most needed - and I found a new me in the process. It’s a beautiful kind of chaos and I embraced all of it. But yes, now it’s time for me again. finally.
Hitting this 6 month mark, I have decided to now wean from breastfeeding, take care of my body better, drink some wine, and write more songs for real. (If my daughter allows, lol). I am choosing to give myself some more me-time, read a book, get my nails done, and eventually get a haircut too. And.. start to think about dieting and training. Moms don’t get enough credit for deciding consciously to not slim down yet because they gotta breastfeed. But- with that said, all moms have their own struggles that no one knows of, so never judge!
A part of the stress that comes with social media sometimes, is actually comments on moms’ sizes, even praises of “wow you slimmed down fast!” As though that’s the most important thing of all. The toxic culture pains me and I just know it’s not the point. For me, it really was a conscious decision, just to be a mother first, above all else, at least for these first six months of her little life. And looking at her, strong, happy and healthy, I am truly so so proud of her for her growth and development.
And finally.. I’m finally ready to think about myself again as a musician. I know I’m lucky to be able to have a choice of being with her for 6 months; I count my blessings everyday. But as songwriting wheels become rustier, and as the industry evolves, I’m quite frankly not sure yet what a singer-songwriter mom looks like. I struggle to name artists in the Chinese speaking world that I could reference from - but I promise I’ll continue to bring music to those ears that still choose to listen.
I still hope that one day - little Naomi can see mama on stage. Looking down at her as she sleeps, I always imagine what she would be like as she grows up - and I hope that one day she will be able to pursue what she loves to do and focus on the truly meaningful things in life.
Thank you for reading through this thinking-out-loud random catch-up session blog thing. I’m just so glad I survived 6 months of motherhood. This stuff ain’t easy! Sending love and thank you all for the support, as always. More updates later!

Don't know how to quit, right?
Let's take the steps to resign gracefully!
.
I believe that in everyone's rhythm, there is a question that comes up in their head. The question is ′′ Should I quit?"
This question always ends up becoming a conversation in the alcohol band or a problem kept in a drawer. Waiting for the day to tear it up again.
.
In real life, there's nobody whose working life is bad. Everyone in the department calls for resignation (maybe) because it's mostly ourselves who has to quit, whether it's bored of what to do or responsible for colleagues or bosses. of expansion, growing in the job duty that needs to be moved.
.
But we understand that there is no easy quitting for anyone. Today, we are telling you how to quit. It's not just a simple job, but a process to resign gracefully!
.
Step 1: Know clearly what you quit for.
This step has to happen before you decide to quit because it's reviewing what the real reason that makes you want to quit. Is it a job, a challenge, a better boss or a higher salary and a quit is the best option?
.
If in the end, you decide to quit, there is a job waiting for you and you agree to sign the contract, so you don't leave.
.
Step 2: Informing your own chief's will.
For this process, there are some tips below.
- Before telling other people in office, tell the direct line boss first.
- For this important step, if possible, let's talk to a face-to-face boss or if not really, let's make a call. It's better than writing an email or text only
- Tell me at least 2 weeks in advance. If it's the boss level, I want to have at least 3-4 week
.
In the process of this talk, no matter what your office experience is, may your conversations with the boss not go too negative. Reasons of resigning positively for goodbyes.
.
Step 3: Don't sit in the jong before leaving.
How close the resignation schedule is, remember while you're still an employee of this company, still working on your responsibilities, and if possible, write down your responsible page for the replacement for the new employees. Very good.
.
Step 4: Gone well
This last step may seem insignificant, but don't forget that no industry is too wide for everyone to know each other. So on the day you leave, don't make anyone feel bad because it won't end a small band for
.
So last day at work, let's say goodbye to everyone with positive energy. Let them remember you with good vibes and it would be great if you always contact your close colleague or supervisor to keep a good relationship you have had together for a long time.
.
Anyone who is planning or has thought of quitting, follow this simple step so you can leave gracefully 💫

Although Japan is not currently on any sort of lockdown or strict order to stay indoors, I think we are all starting to realize that we need to take matters into our own hands and self-isolate as much as possible. For those of you who are dealing with your first "crisis" in Japan, I wanted to provide a little bit of a guide to help you make sure you're as prepared as you can be, for spending time indoors.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
●Curry
- Meats: Pork, Beef, or Chicken. Whatever you have.
- Vegetables: Potato, Onion, Carrot, Mushrooms, Spinach/Komatsuna/Kale, Asparagus, Sweet Potato, Pumpkin (Kabocha), Eggplant, Okura, Renkon (Lotus Root)
Quick Tutorial on How To Make Curry @ 4:53
●Instant Miso (for reference, this is the kind I usually buy https://www.amanofd.jp/amano/shop/goods/index.html?ggcd=B4741&cid=miso)
You can buy any kind, some instant miso comes with a paste, which some people may prefer but I like the freeze-dried type. It is said that certain nutrients are preserved when you freeze-dry vegetables, so I think they're a bit healthier.
●Cook Do (for reference: https://www.ajinomoto.co.jp/cookdo/lineup/)
These are usually found in the Chinese seasoning section of your Japanese supermarket (as the majority of the boxes are Chinese.) Similar simple-meal kits with Japanese recipes are sometimes stocked in the same aisle.
●Canned Tomatoes
- Good for curries (add one can of diced tomatoes to your curry to make it more tangy and acidic)
- Pasta (sautee veggies, garlic, onion, and bacon, add your diced tomatoes, stew, taste, and season, add to pasta)
- Soups (lightly sautee your favorite soup veggies in oil and garlic, pour diced tomatoes into the pot, then fill the empty tomato can with water and add one cube of soup stock of your choice, throw in your desired seasonings, bring to a boil and simmer. you can add rice, quinoa, gains, shredded chicken to make it a hearty meal.)
- Stews (for beef, lamb, and pork, I cut my vegetables large, season them first with cumin, curry spice, cinnamon, salt, pepper, paprika, etc to make a fragrant mix, then add tomatoes and water, and simmer until liquid has dissolved and the mixture is thick enough to be a stew.)
- Salsa (Use half a can, pulse in a mixer with red onion, cilantro, garlic, green pepper, red chiles, lemon, salt, pepper, and a bit of cumin for a more tex-mex flavor)
●Spices:
I didn't show them in the video but I actually prefer S&B's herb packets, you can see what they look like here:
https://www.sbotodoke.com/shop/c/cB51210/
Most supermarkets have them, and they are very versatile, cheap, and easy to use.
●Yakiniku Sauce:
You can choose any kind you like! When in doubt, the popular Yakiniku chain "Gyukaku" has a sauce in the supermarket that's pretty good. Use this on "grilled" and "charred" meats. Tastes great over rice. Make a "Yakiniku Bowl" with charred carrots, cabbage, onion, green pepper, and slices of beef or pork.
●Ponzu: I prefer Yuzu, but you won't be missing out on too much if they don't stock it. Regular Ponzu works. Use this on steamed veggies with lighter flavors, or in sautees with Asian veggies (bok choy with garlic topped with ponzu, baked white fish with salt and ponzu, or daikon and pork sauteed with ponzu is great!) Can be mixed with olive oil, salt, and pepper to make a salad dressing too!
●Veggies - Try to pick a few greens, and then one veggie of each color. I try to plan for one raw-green (for salads), one wilting-green (for soups and stir-fries), and one firm-green (for baking grilling) per shop.
Green: Lettuce, Baby Leaf, Spinach, Bok Choy, Komatsuna, Asparagus, Zucchini, Green Pepper, Kale, Cucumber, Cabbage, Avocado
Purple: Red Onion, Eggplant, Purple Turnip, Satsumaimo (Sweet Potato), Purple Cabbage (great for adding color).
Red: Tomatoes, Red Peppers, Beets, Beni Daikon (Red Radish)
Orange: Carrot, Pumpkin, Orange Pepper, Orange/Yellow Fruit Tomatoes
White: Daikon, Turnip, Cauliflower, Renkon (Lotus Root), Bean Sprouts, Potato, Onion, Sato-Imo, Yama-Imo,
Brown: Gobo (burdock root), Mushroom
●Buy & Freeze:
- A loaf of bread or two (Japanese bread tends to come in slices instead of loaves so buy accordingly.)
- Meats (Chicken Breasts are the most versatile AND cost-effective IMO.)
- Frozen Seafood (S&B has a paella seasoning! if you can find it, this is a nice way to utilize rice, veggies, and seafood)
- Frozen naughty snacks like pizza, dorayaki, frozen fried rice, emergency instant meals, etc can go here too.
●Pasta and Rice are good to have, but if you don't have a rice cooker in your apartment, you can buy a few microwavable instant-packs from your supermarket or convenience store and store those instead.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let me know what you'd add! I'm out of space and can't write more :'(

How to Learn 5000 Chinese Characters(Hanzi/Kanji) Effectively
-------------
Adam is an English guy who's been living in Hong Kong for four and a half years. He studied Linguistics at Cambridge University, and already speaks fluent Chinese (Cantonese) quite fluently. Adam is not only able to speak flute Chinese (Cantonese), but also able to read and write.
In this episode he talks about how to learn Chinese character(Hanzi/Kanji) effectively including the technique and tools that he recommends to use.
Learning Chinese characters is a memory game. You want to:
1, Know the meanings and pronunciations of a few thousand Chinese characters(Hanzi/Kanji) .
2, Keep them in your memory.
3, Minimise the time it takes to do this.
Let’s see how a Cambridge Linguist recommend you to learn Chinese Characters/Kanji effectively.
