Academy Sports and Outdoors (ASO),
Jim Cramer: The Biggest Thing That Happened Thursday Was the Boring Stuff
No, it wasn't Robinhood or the mega-cap tech companies, it was names we depend on like Carrier Global.
By JIM CRAMER Jul 29, 2021 | 03:38 PM EDT
Stocks quotes in this article: HOOD, FB, PYPL, CARR, RTX, NUE, AGCO, ZM, ALGN, AAPL, EBAY, AMD, XLNX
One of the most glorious things I have seen involving the stock market in ages happened today.
Was it Vlad Tenev ringing the opening bell for his breakthrough, disruptive Robinhood (HOOD) , representing 22 million mostly young new investors? Was it the free-for-all decline in the stock of the "F" in FAANG, Facebook (FB) ? Or the clobbering that Paypal (PYPL) took after what looked to be a good quarter?
Nah. I was bumping into Dave Gitlin, CEO of Carrier Global (CARR) , and his charming daughter, a college student at the University of Wisconsin. They were calmly waiting for me to finish "Squawk on the Street" to say, "Hi," and I couldn't be more thrilled. Because unlike the much ballyhooed Robinhood deal, which seems like a bust, Carrier Global came public back in April 2020 at $12 and today, after tremendous earnings, not sales, but earnings, it made an all-time high at $53, after reporting a terrific number with tremendous HVAC sales, up 31%, and an earnings surprise of 55 cents vs. the 30 cents that Wall Street was expecting.
Carrier, which was spun off when United Technologies merged with Raytheon (RTX) had some tailwinds, like the need to have clean air inside, because of the pandemic and clear air outside because office buildings are responsible for 40% of carbon emissions. But the huge upside surprise and the gigantic buyback belonged to Dave and his team and I that's what I told his daughter. I made sure she knew how proud she should be about how this man made so much money for people. Twelve to 53 in 15 months time is the name of the game.
Look, I am not trying to take away from anything that Robinhood and its co-founder and CEO Vlad Tenev have created. Far from it. They have created billions for themselves and are now letting people participate in their great sales growth. You got a chance to pay a fortune per share and many Robinhoodies did, as tons of stock was allocated to the 22 million people who joined Robinhood, because of a bang up app that every young person seems to know.
I am simply saying that HVAC, yep heating, ventilation and air conditioning is one of the most boring businesses on earth and at times like today, with all of the hoopla of Robinhood it is easy to forget is how lots of money can be made being boring, and I like that. The most exciting thing that happened this year is Carrier helped provide refrigeration for vaccines. That's just fine with me.
Unlike Robinhood, Carrier hasn't brought anyone into the stock market. It's more laser-like focus on air conditioning once spun off from Raytheon means nothing to people. Just Wall Street gibberish. But you have probably walked by a Carrier machine thousands of times and never thought anything of it. Yet, you could have bought it for a song at six times earnings instead of 25 times sales.
The Carriers, with CEOs who pay themselves lavishly but perhaps not excessively, or the Nucor's (NUE) the steel company that's also well managed and sells at six times earnings, represent valuable properties, especially when the U.S. government is about to agree on a trillion dollar infrastructure bill and the country has more than 6% GDP. We don't know why they are re-opening trades or closing trades, delta-variant trades or building and bridge investments. Forgive me, though for comparing the company of Robinhood, with something that may stay special for a while vs. companies that get described as venerable, solid and built to last.
These companies are not rarities. You know people have to eat, right? You know that there would be famine without farming. So why not buy the stock of Agco (AGCO) , No. 2 farm equipment, which went from $40 to $130 in a year and a half without ever being expensive. Combines too boring? Again fine with me. Now that the masks are off -- or at least in some places, although Zoom (ZM) is still crushing it -- I, like many others, including my daughter, didn't like how her teeth looked even as, to me, they were perfect. Dentists tell you to get Align (ALGN) . I wanted them on "Mad Money" but the show was just too darned jammed. The stock's up the most in the S&P 500, with a product that, again, like the Purloined Letter, is right in front of you.
I love tech. Created the term FANG, added the "A" when it was clear that Apple (AAPL) had to take the acronymic stage between another "A" and an "N." I am proud that those who bet against me on Twitter, the legion, are betting against FAANG. I wrote obituaries for a goodly time in my career as a reporter but I never wrote as many as have been penned to talk about the group has already made the ultimate measure on behalf of shareholders.
Oh and it's not like I don't like tech or fin tech. I felt the slings and arrows of Facebook and PayPal today. Facebook's management once again lowered the boom on its future talking about real deceleration in growth. I thought it was too dire. PayPal's Dan Schulman talked about how the separation with its former partner, eBay (EBAY) gets done now and earnings will be hurt. This was one of the least revelatory surprises ever. I think both are practicing UPOD, Underpromising to Overdeliver, and, sure this time might be different, but it's sure been the way they have handled it in the past.
Far better to be in the straight out blow outs like Advance Micro (AMD) which had still one more banner day, this time because the company it is buying, the dowdy Xilinx (XLNX) , a sleepy semiconductor company, had tremendous earnings. The two together could be unassailable and even as AMD is now richly valued it is deservingly so.
I can't wait to hear Vlad Tenev's reflection on Robinhood's debut as a public company and about the novel offering that gave millions of shares to his clients. Vlad's not so much a rags to riches American story. He's a poor Bulgarian to insanely rich American because of his on ingenuity. That's a story with celebrating in itself.
I am simply pointing out that unlike Vlad, whom you would have had invested with when you weren't allowed or able to, Dave Gitlin sure didn't keep you out of the better bet, the stock of HVAC king Carrier.
You did.

PENGURUSAN AIR TERJUN SUNGAI PANDAN BODOH?
Jadi dia angin.
Org baru pun datang2 dah kena bayar dah tempat ni. So normal la kena bayar. Kita org lama je terasa sket. Gambang waterpark tiket rm30 pun org bayar. Zaman berubah. Kos bertambah.
Kita kena faham. Kenapa kena bayar? Entry fee kena bayar, piknik punya spot pun skrng dah kena bayar. Meh kita sembang fakta sket:
1. Selama aku datang air terjun pancing ni, tak pernah aku tengok waterfall ni kotor.
Pergi Berkelah waterfall. Tengok sendiri. Sampai NGO kena pergi buat kerja amal kutip sampah dan clearkan.
Ko tengok pantai sepat yang takde pengurusan jadi macamana. Ko lepas anak kecik, kejap je dia dah ada alat utk main pasir guna botol, guna plastik mcm mcm. Kena rogol pantai tu sampai pokok pun tumbang dikerja dek org.
Jadi korang rasa nak menguruskan tempat tumpuan orang ramai ni mudah ke? Menguruskan tempat ni bukan sekadar kutip sampah je.
Kang naik lagi kang meroyan pulokkk.
2. Fasiliti punya hal. Ko banding la rm2 sekepala vs rm30 sekepala. Ko nak expect jamban macam gambang waterpark ke? Memang lah patut dia bagi kemudahan terbaik. Tapi kalau 1000 orang masuk keluar mmg lebam dan punah. Nak kena maintain. Buat yang sini, rebeh yang sana. Repair kat sini, rosak kat sana. Kita kena faham lah.
Aku tak rasa kerajaan negeri mampu nak bantu.
Kalau kita rasa boleh buat lagi bagus tanpa cas, cuba gi lawan dekat pejabat hutan Pahang. Mintak air terjun tu ko yang urus. Tgk mcmana bleh la org mcm aku ni gi sana free takyah bayor tapi jamban standard gambang waterpark pastu sampah clear setiap masa.. ork?
Pasal air cetek, tengok video ni:

WATER MANAGEMENT OF SUNGAI PANDAN STUPID?
Just now I read a post scolding and shared the post by the owner of the post in several Kuantan groups. The story is he is not satisfied because he has to charge more for picnic and when he has presented the mat, the waterfall manager came and asked him to move to the location. So he's the wind.
Okay, okay. I also disagree with the management of Sungai Pandan waterfall (Kuantan people call Panching Falls). I see other people's comments on their posts can also agree and hit the management. But there are things we need to understand.
We are Kuantan people. We've felt the time when entering the waterfall is free. So we have a feeling not the same as someone who just came 2-3 times. New people come and have to pay for this place. So it's normal to pay. We are old people feel sketched. Spring waterpark tickets are paid for RM30. Times change. Cost increases.
We have got to understand. Why is it getting paid? Entry fees can be paid, even a picnic has a spot now it's paid. Almost we do sketch facts:
1. As long as I came to this fishing waterfall, I've never seen this waterfall dirty. From the time when people were 50 people a day entering here until now it feels like there are 200 normal days and 1000 days off. Who picks up trash?
How do you want to see the waterfall that is free and has no management? Going to Picnic waterfall. See for yourself. Until the NGO has to go to do charity work collecting garbage and clearing up.
You look at the sepat beach that has no management so how. After you were small, in a while he already had the tool to play sand using bottles, use plastic like that. Got raped by the beach until the tree fell down at other s' work.
So do you guys feel like managing people's focus is easy? Managing this place is not just collecting garbage. He has to make sure you and your family don't die. The place where you parked the mat is the place where the head of the water falls! That's why it's sandy and there's no tree growing there. Do you want to die in your family? That's why he put the signboard and don't picnic there.
But the number of people entering, the size of the area and the number of employees he has limit the waterfall management monitoring movement from going check it out every time. That's why there's only some times missing the family park picnic mat there. If you want to add people you need to pay your salary and of course the money will come from your tickets. If you're going up again, you'll be complaining.
2. Facility has a thing. You compare RM2 per head vs RM30 per head. Do you want to expect a toilet like a waterpark gambang? Of course he should give the best amenities. But if 1000 people come out it will be bruised and extinct. Need to maintain it. Do this here, rebeh there. Repair here, it's broken there. We need to understand.
I am personally grateful for the place that I love like this waterfall patching is well maintained by private people like this.
I don't think the state government can help. If the state government really wants to promote this place, it's been a long time since we've had a nice way into this place But the truth is now we are sharing the quarry road from me until I am old.
So what we have now we need to promote and take care of. Kuantan this is a lot of things. Only these 2-3 places are available. So don't ruin the reputation of this place and management too much.
If we think we can do better without charge, try to fight at Pahang forest office. Ask for the waterfall that you manage. See how people like me can go there for free no need to pay but standard toilet gambang waterpark and then clear the garbage every time.. ork?

Shaquille O'Neal won his personal battle with Allen Iverson for the league lead in scoring and won the war as well, propelling the Los Angeles Lakers to a 100-88 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Lakers' 7-1 All-Star center entered the contest two-tenths
of a point behind Iverson for the NBA scoring lead.
He outscored the 76ers' All-Star shooting guard, 37-15, and
grabbed 14 rebounds as Los Angeles cruised to its eighth
straight win, 13th in a row at home and 27th in 28 contests.
"I used to be the beast of the East, but now I'm the great test
of the West," O'Neal said. "Every team brings their `A' game to
us. I wanted to come out and be very active. We tried to make
Iverson and those guys drive on us and we tried to meet them at
midpoint, so I got a couple of blocks."
"It's hard to beat that team when Shaq's playing like that,"
Iverson said. "When he's playing like that, it's hard for anyone
to beat these guys."
O'Neal hit 17-of-28 shots, handed out five assists and added a
season-high eight blocks, continuing his runaway campaign for
league Most Valuable Player honors and making the Lakers look
like the team to beat for the NBA title.
"I'm not worried about individual accolades," O'Neal said. "If
you guys vote me for the (MVP) award, thanks, and if you don't,
I understand. I'm focused on bigger and better things."
Iverson finished 6-of-20 from the field in 37 minutes and was
reportedly hobbled by an injured toe. Matt Geiger scored 20
points for the Sixers, who have dropped two straight since a
season-high seven-game winning streak.
"I'm not as quick as I want to be because I'm having trouble
with this toe," Iverson said. "It's kind of hard to push off on
my drives so it's kind of limited my drives. It's tough on me
to play this way."
Los Angeles swept the two-game season series.
Ron Harper scored 16 points and Rick Fox added 13 off the bench
for the Lakers, who shot 53 percent (42-of-79) and held a 50-38
rebounding edge. Kobe Bryant had 10 points, nine rebounds and
five assists for Los Angeles, which overcame 20 turnovers.
A.C Green had 11 points and nine boards for the Lakers, who held
a 51-46 halftime advantage.
O'Neal scored 24 of his points after intermission and seemed to
take over the contest, making an eight-foot hook shot, a short
jumper, another hook, two free throws and a layup to make it
70-63 with 3:56 left in the third quarter.
"I've been watching (O'Neal) and he's been great every game at
both ends of the court," Philadelphia coach Larry Brown said.
"He doesn't care about scoring and he gets everybody involved.
He doesn't have an ego at all other than to try and win and
they've got a lot of complimentary players that are just doing a
great job."
He had a spectacular sequence at the start of the fourth quarter
when he hit a six-foot hook, blocked Tyrone Hill's shot, fed
Bryant for a running jumper and made an 11-footer and a layup to
extend the margin to 86-71 with 8:47 to play.
Toni Kukoc scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half for
Philadelphia, which shot 37.5 percent (36-of-96) and committed
just nine turnovers. Eric Snow had 12 points and eight assists
and Theo Ratliff added 10 poitns and 13 boards for Philadelphia,
which had won three in a row against Los Angeles entering the
season.
