Chinese 101 - 王(wáng)
Imagine: less than a few centuries ago, our world consisted of no less than a hundred thousand kingdoms. Each nation had a king, so we had a hundred thousand kings as well!
So what were the kings of the past like?
We can find out through considering the Chinese character for king, 王(wáng), which directly evolved from a pictograph. The oldest oracle bone script depicts a giant person standing on the ground, reflecting that kings were not like ordinary persons, but much more distinguished in their virtues, knowledge, and features. Later, a horizontal stroke was added above that large person, symbolizing heaven. And with further strokes added, the meaning of 王 became more lucid. The three horizontal strokes symbolize three realms: earth, humankind, and heaven. The vertical stroke indicates that kings are mediators between these realms. It’s their divine mission to establish order on earth for humans.
