💕「愛台灣，我的選擇」系列第15發：臺虎董事長黃一葦(Peter Huang) 要讓臺虎精釀 Taihu Brewing成為台灣年輕人才發光發熱與實踐夢想的平台

「儘管我有著東方面孔，但我不是台灣人，家族根源也不在台灣。一直到我念大學時 (美國麻薩諸塞州的威廉斯學院，非常棒的學校)，我才透過普林斯頓北京中文培訓班的機會，真正到東亞來闖蕩。

大學畢業之後，我埋首於數字和表格之間，精釀啤酒陪我撐過了這段辛苦的歲月。我的職涯始於紐約，但後來輾轉來到亞洲 (名義上是去新加坡，但主要是在印尼、緬甸和馬來西亞)。

在數字間打轉從來不是我的夢想。身為一個負責任且典型的千禧世代，我一直很想獨立開創自己的事業，如果能將個人興趣和創業機會相結合，那就太完美了。而精釀啤酒就是那完美的交集點！精釀工藝的精神我深有同感，這是一種對未來可能性充滿嚮往、不盲目接受現狀的精神；同時也代表著與一群優秀的人才，一起開發令人驚喜的產品，並打造屬於自己的社群。

成立臺虎精釀的契機出現之後，我立刻想到台灣。之所以選擇這裡，不是因為台灣文化很吸引人 (雖然確實是)，不是因為台灣有著厚實的文化傳統 (雖然確實有)，更不是因為台灣的好山好水。

我選擇台灣的主要原因是這裡遇到的人。很多人會說，人生中有兩個家庭，一個是你的原生家庭，另一個是你自己選擇的家庭。對我來說，那個我自己選擇的家庭，似乎就在台灣。

臺虎精釀的商標 (由台灣傑出設計師Jess Lee設計) 由老虎、啤酒花和葫蘆三個元素組成，葫蘆是古代盛酒的容器。

葫蘆就不需要多加解釋了，但啤酒花是當代精釀啤酒的基石，代表著創新創意的精神。事實上，我們使用的絕大多數啤酒花都來自美國，畢竟美國是精釀啤酒的中心 (過去20年一直都是)。美國的啤酒花產業 (還有麥芽產業) 可以說是世界之最，也難怪經典IPA啤酒中最受歡迎的啤酒花都來自美國。

商標中的老虎是為了向早期台灣作為「亞洲四虎」(亞洲四小龍) 的年代致敬。當年台灣經濟快速起飛，產業朝氣蓬勃，民眾無不對未來充滿樂觀和期待。

老虎代表的正是那樣的生機勃勃、神采煥發。臺虎167名員工幾乎都是台灣人。我們認為，與其說臺虎是一個釀酒廠，不如說臺虎是讓台灣年輕人才發光發熱、實踐夢想的平台。

我們的目標是吸引並培育人才，最終目標希望能夠在台灣發展出欣欣向榮的創業生態圈。Sway是我們成立初期的成員，她一開始是在吧台工作，非常優秀。在小公司工作的好處就是，你可以盡你所能所想去做，Sway後來開始慢慢接觸進口通關業務，現在是我們全球物流的主管 (很不簡單)。

💕Why I chose Taiwan #15 – Taihu Brewing Founder Peter Huang leads Taihu to become a platform for Taiwan young talents to carry out their dreams and express themselves

“Despite appearances, I’m neither Taiwanese nor have roots here. It took college (Williams College in Massachusetts – phenomenal place), to really bring me out to East Asia via Princeton’s immersion program in Beijing.

Post-graduation, I paid my dues shuffling numbers around in a spreadsheet. Craft beer made it bearable-ish. Working life began in New York, but ultimately landed me in Asia (nominally Singapore, primarily Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia).

Shuffling numbers was not the dream. So, as a responsibly stereotypical millennial, I had an urge to venture out on my own. Ideally, to try something at the intersection of opportunity and interest. Craft beer! The craft movement itself struck a chord - a yearning for what could be, rather than blind acceptance of what is. It is about building communities around delightful products and, critically, wonderful people.

When the opportunity to start Taihu appeared, my mind immediately went to Taiwan. Not necessarily because the culture is fantastic (though it is), nor because it has a strong cultural heritage (though it does), and not even because the island itself is a magical composition of mountains meeting oceans.

Ultimately, I chose Taiwan because of the people I met here. There’s a tired trope that you get two families in life, the one you’re born into and the one you choose. For me, that chosen family, well, it seemed like it could be in Taiwan.

Taihu Brewing’s logo (designed by brilliant local artist, Jess Lee) is comprised of a tiger and hops within a hulu (traditional Chinese alcohol vessel).

The hulu needs no explanation, but hops are the cornerstone of modern craft beer. They represent the innovation inherent in the space. In fact, the vast majority of the hops that we use are from the United States. Since the US is the epicenter of craft brewing (and has been over the last twenty years), the American hop industry (malt too, actually) is arguably the best in the world. It is for good reason that the most popular hops in category-defining IPAs are American.

The tiger is a nod to an earlier era when Taiwan was one of the “Four Asian Tigers.” Taiwan’s meteoric economic rise was accompanied by deterministic optimism, vibrancy, and general excitement about the future.

The tiger represents that energy. That sense of opportunity, positivity, and hope. Taihu’s 167 employees are almost entirely Taiwanese. Internally, we think of Taihu as more of a platform for young Taiwanese talent than as a brewery, a medium for that energy to express itself.

Our goal to attract and develop talent with the ultimate goal of developing the burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystem here in Taiwan. One of our earliest team members, Sway, came on board as a bartender -- a fantastic bartender. At a small company, you do what you can, where you can, and Sway ended up taking up some of the slack in our logistics. Now she runs all of Taihu’s international supply chain (no small feat).

Prospered after the Night of Lockdown

I shared this post back in April this year, but I am led to share it again, with new details. Read carefully and prayerfully!

“You shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two door posts with the blood that is in the basin; and none of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. For Yahweh will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when he sees the blood on the lintel, and on the two door posts, Yahweh will pass over the door, and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to strike you.” (Exodus‬ ‭12:22-23‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

In Egypt, the children of Israel were commanded by Yahweh God to be on lockdown in their homes to take shelter from a final plague. Sounds familiar?

It wasn’t the front door that protected them from the last plague, but the blood of the Passover lamb applied on the doorpost and lintel, forming a Hebrew letter “Tav” which represents a cross.

When the destroyer swept through the land of Egypt, the firstborn children and animals of the Egyptians died, but the children of Israel were unharmed because of the blood.

Dear brethren, be wise, stay at home in this season, but without fear.

The bunch of hyssop which the children of Israel used to apply the blood of the lamb is a picture of our tongue.

When we believe and declare that by the shed blood of Jesus we are under God’s protection from plagues and pestilences, we will experience it.

Protection won’t happen by default. You have to apply the blood on your heart’s door, and it will happen through faith.

Do you know what happened after the plague had passed? The children of Israel were chased out from Egypt in a hurry because the Egyptians were fearful of them.

“The Egyptians were urgent with the people, to send them out of the land in haste, for they said, “We are all dead men.” The people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading troughs being bound up in their clothes on their shoulders. The children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they asked of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing. Yahweh gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. They plundered the Egyptians.” (Exodus‬ ‭12:33-36‬ ‭WEB‬)

They plundered the Egyptians and came out of Egypt with silver and gold. After having no salary for hundreds of years, they were repaid and restored suddenly in just one night!

Later on, the children of Israel used the gold to build the tabernacle to worship God.

Speaking prophetically about our times, after the COVID-19 lockdown, the wealth of the Egyptians (the world; Gentiles) will be transferred into the hands of God’s covenant people (the church of Jesus Christ).

For the world, it’s a recession, but God’s children will see the wealth of the nations added unto them.

This is for those who have faith—remember that anyone of the children of Israel who didn’t apply the blood of the lamb on their doorposts and lintel ended up with a dead firstborn child.

God gave favor to the children of Israel so that the Egyptians gave the children of Israel “what they asked”.
If you don’t ask, you will walk out of this pandemic with no increase.

Those who have a revelation of this will ask boldly and receive in abundance.
How much will you ask for when you know that the answer will always be “Yes” and “Okay”?
Personally, I’d take as much as I can on my way out of Egypt, loading them on carts and wagons with animals pulling them.

This financial enrichment will happen by God granting us favor. We will be prospered for a purpose.

Just like the children of Israel used the silver and gold to build a place of worship unto God, we will be enriched so that the Gospel of Jesus Christ will be sponsored to go further and fastest than ever before.

Don’t be one of those who say they don’t need to prosper or that it’s not God’s will to prosper His people. Forgive me for being so blunt, but that’s self-centered, unbiblical and lazy thinking.

This is not about you. It’s about the growth of God’s kingdom. Receive in abundance for Jesus’ sake, and give all the extra money away to fund evangelism efforts if you don’t need it—the increase in wealth is not for your own hoarding purposes.
Use your wealth to be a blessing to others and show God’s heart of love.

“Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt. There will arise after them seven years of famine, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. The famine will consume the land, and the plenty will not be known in the land by reason of that famine which follows; for it will be very grievous. The dream was doubled to Pharaoh, because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.” (Genesis‬ ‭41:29-32‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Either last year or the year before, as I was studying the Book of Genesis, the Holy Spirit opened my understanding to see the prophetic meaning of the passage above.

It is about Pharaoh’s dream. In the end times, the seven years of plenty represent the seven years before the Rapture, and the seven years of famine afterwards represents the seven years of Tribulation for the world. Before the Lord returns, it will be a time of great prosperity and blessedness that ends upon the church’s departure from this world.

God’s kingdom is going to expand at an unprecedented speed! Are you ready for a great outpouring of God’s blessings before Jesus returns to receive His church? Make sure you position yourself to receive in abundance!

I believe God showed me a clear sign to confirm what I knew inside—the financial vehicle by which this wealth transfer will happen, besides physical gold and silver (which are always good to have).

校長、師長、家長，和在螢幕前難以置信這就是我們的畢典，卻也真實面對的所有臺大畢業生，大家好，我是政治學系四年級的林語萱。

比起說著我們會鵬程萬里、前程似錦，今天，我更想邀請各位一同擔任NTU Sweety Course的貢獻者，整理出綜合過去四年，且能帶著走出校園的三個成長學分：勇氣、彈性和自己。

大二上，我休了學，在零下三十幾度的低溫、強颱般的逆風和看不見天際線的白色大地中，越野滑雪了半個多月，只為了跟著亞洲第一支南極長征隊伍，在世界的盡頭，找到那個能夠超越極限的自己。參與這個計畫，或許是大多人眼中的不正常，然而它卻成為了我人生中最有收穫的選擇之一。相信在臺大這個充滿可能性的校園裡，許多人心中，也有這麼一個想征服的南極，它可能不怎麼正常，也不怎麼容易，但別忘了帶著勇氣這個學分去做、去闖你認爲是對的事物。

再來，還有個學分，叫做彈性。還記得那些腳踏車被水源阿伯給拖吊，只好改成走路或騎Ubike2.0的日常嗎？我們在一次又一次的校內小組合作、校外的家教實習中，反覆上著適應不同情況的實驗課，而疫情又加重了它的loading，原本以為上一屆已經夠慘，沒想到這一屆竟然還更糟的情況下，我們滾動式的調整上課的樣貌，努力用NTU Cool的1.5倍速上課。在唯一不變就是變的這個世間常態中，臺大教會了我們保持彈性的生存之道。

最後，最最重要的學分，是我們自己，沒錯，就是在螢幕前的每一個你你你。從大一忙碌於轉系和雙主修的菜鳥，變成焦慮著左右張望他人下一步的大四老人，我們總汲汲營營的害怕落後別人，擔心無法成為自己心中想成為的樣子，但當回過頭，騎過幾千次椰林大道後的我們，其實早已不是從前那個自己了。所以未來，當外界的環境，督促和逼迫著我們精益求精，好還要更好時，記得回到內心，聽聽它的聲音，由它來告訴我們：你不必成為誰，你只需要相信自己。

除了勇氣、彈性和自己這三個學分外，還有一張加簽單也別忘記，是一路陪伴我們的家人和師長，一個人的任性，需要很多人的愛才能夠成全，謝謝你們在成長路上的陪伴和鼓勵，我們才能夠放肆的任性。

最後的最後，我想起了一戰後的西班牙大流感，它帶走的生命比戰爭還多，但在時間洪流下也終究有結束的一天。誰知道一百多年後的今天，我們也被迫參與了歷史的進程。也許未來看似困難重重，但卡繆在瘟疫裡提醒了我們：「惟有甘願在困難的堅實土壤中去生根立足，才能夠獲得果實。」今天後的明日，我們將在不同的土壤中勇敢挑戰、彈性應對和相信自己，且帶著滿滿的愛去生根立足，為自己、為我們所身處的社會，產出最甜美的果實。準備好了嗎？讓我們一起推動歷史的進程吧！臺大109屆的畢業生們，畢業快樂，或許現在的我們無法面對面相聚，but I’ll see you down the road！謝謝大家。

President Kuan, respected faculty, honored guests and family, and to my fellow NTU graduates who would never have imagined our commencement hosted in this way but still making the best of it, good morning. I am YU-HSUAN LIN, from Department of Political Science.

Rather than wishing the best and the brightest futures to us all, today, I want to urge each and every one of you to join in and contribute to NTU Sweety Course, and put together three amongst the most important credits from these past four years. They are courage, elasticity, and ourselves.

I took a temporary leave in my sophomore year. At minus 30 degrees Celsius, with howling headwinds and blizzards all over the sky, I did cross-country skiing for more than half a month, to challenge myself beyond the limit at the very end of the world. My Antarctic venture may seem absurd to many, but it was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done in my life. At NTU, a campus of endless possibilities, we all have a South Pole in our hearts, an undoubtedly challenging and perhaps laughable goal we yearn to achieve. But do not forget the credit of courage we have gained from these past years, and choose whatever it is that you believe is right.

The next credit, is adaptability. Do you remember the days when our bikes being towed and having to walk or take Ubike 2.0 to class? We learned to adapt through group projects in the classes and private tutoring off-campus, and the ongoing pandemic has added extra loading to our everyday challenges. We thought the previous year was bad, but this year is even worse. We adjust the way we took courses on a rolling basis, trying to catch up from NTU COOL at 1.5x speed. The only thing that doesn't change is change itself. NTU taught us how to adapt to survive.

Last but not least, and arguably the most important credit, is ourselves. That’s right, It’s each and every one of you behind the screens. From a first-year newbie busy planning your double major or transfer, to a senior wandering around anxiously as our peers taking next steps, we work hard painstakingly in fear of falling behind of other, and wonder if we can become the person we want to be. But looking back, after countless rides along the Royal Palm Boulevard, our old selves have already long gone. So, in the future, when the outside world is constantly pushing us to make the best even better and to reach beyond limits, remember to listen to that little voice inside of you. Listen to it as it tells you, there isn’t a certain or definite role you must fulfill, all you need is to have faith in yourself.

Besides the three credits I just mentioned, don’t forget the Petition for Adding Course: our families and professors who accompanied us along our journeys. It requires loves from many to accomplish caprice of one. Thank you for your company and encouragement along the way to allow us to be self-willed boldly.

Lastly, the Spanish flu outbreak after WWI came to my mind recently. It took even more lives than the battle fields. However, it too, eventually ended as time went by. Who knew that after a hundred years, we would also be a part of a similar history? It seems that adversities are awaiting us, but Albert Camus had already reminded us in La Peste “Like wandering shadows that could have acquired substance only by consenting to root themselves in the solid earth of their distress.” When tomorrow comes, in different corners on the Earth, we shall challenge, respond adaptively, and believe in ourselves. With each step that we take, we take with all the love there is within us. Let us contribute to ourselves and to our society, and may our efforts bear the sweetest fruits. Are you ready? Let’s push history forward! Hats off to all NTU graduates of 2021! Although we are unable to celebrate face to face now, I’ll see you down the road! Thank you all!

[ 10年感情的道别 | Goodbye My 10 Years Relationship ]
10年真的不短，很遗憾无法一起走到最后。

求婚了，却早已错过应该发生的时间点。
面对瓶颈考验的爱情在挽救期中感性被理性打败了，写下句号。
我们分了。我们都很不舍，但确实分了。

很抱歉，令所有期待的家人朋友失望了。
这10年里她对我很好，无可挑剔；而我做不好的我全都承认，是我的理所当然及舒适心态导致了今天的所有，我诚心道歉。

对于一直关心我俩的亲朋好友，感恩过去所有的祝福，也谢谢这些年的见证。
对于曾煽动我们分手的朋友们，抱歉拖了那么久，往后不需煽动了。

我特别要感谢彼此的家人、爱我们的家人们。这些年让大家心中累计的担忧及不满实在不应该，让大家操心了，诚恳地鞠躬致歉。谢谢这些年的爱与包容，打从心里的感恩，谢谢。

面对10年感情的结束，难过是肯定的。
即使平时爱笑的我们，也为这次的句号流了好多公升的泪。但我们答应彼此会带着所有开心的记忆把对方放在心中一个特别的位置。换了身份，没了昵称，不管未来缘分如何，我们都会是彼此继续珍惜的那位。

最后，公开这首十年前写给她的歌，也是十年后我重新录制十周年版本向她求婚的作品。MV里记录了过去十年的精选画面，婚没求得成，但我们都认为这首歌是纪念这10年的最初；10年的最终，最佳的礼物，也要谢谢歌曲的幕后团队 ：佳旺 (金马旺) 的 编曲 / 制作 / 录音 /配唱 ，沁嘉 的 合音编写 / 合音 ， 文浩 的混音。他们是少数知道我求婚计划也期待着好消息的朋友。。。可惜让你们失望了，谢谢你们的一切付出与耐心，我都真心感激。

10 years, regret that we couldn’t make it till the end.

I proposed, but had missed the right timing to do it right.
After went through the consideration period, rational beat sentimental, it ended.
Yes, we broke up. It’s really hard to accept, but yes, we broke up.

Truly regret to all friends and families’ members who had expectation on us.For the past 10 years, she’s perfect. For all the wrong which I made, I’ll take all the blame. I’m truly sorry, for the relationship which I care so much.

To all friends who care about both of us throughout these 10 years, thanks for witnessing us.
To those who didn’t expect good ending, sorry for the long waiting.

I would like to specially thank both of our family’s members. I can understand all the worries and dissatisfactions throughout the years. Really shouldn’t allow those to happen. I Sincerely apologize. Sorry.

Hereby, I would like to thank her, the girl I crushed into when she did make up for me 10 years ago, the girl who always put me as priority for the past 10 years, the girl who used 10 years’ time to grew me up in the world of love – Mey , Thank you for everything, you completed a lot of my missing part in life and had brighten up my days with different colours. Thanks for always standing by my side although when the world disagree on me. Thanks for your bottomless mental support which let me went through lots of down time as I always know there’ll at least be a super fans forever, it’s you. As of now, I still feel like knowing you is 1 of the most beautiful accident in life, and you able to calmed me down whenever and wherever you were around. It’s more than words, I’m sure you knew it, thank you so much, sincerely.

Allow me to hold my tears and say this 1 more time openly, Mey, I love you, as always.

10 years long run coming to an end, for sure it’s really hurt and sad.
But we’ll promise to bring along all happy memories and place each other at a special point in our heart. You will always be a person that I care about.

Lastly, sharing out the song I wrote for her 10 years ago, and it’s being re-produced again into a 10th year anniversary version for my proposal purpose. The MV are made by all key moments we been through together. Although my proposal failed, but we do think it’s a best way to conclude and remember those 10 years, from the beginning to the end. Yes it’s really an accident to our relationship, even to ourselves. If it’s meant to be an accident, at least let it be a “Beautiful Accident”.

Debuted at Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy 300 celebrations in Hong Kong, the song considers the experience of loneliness that besets many touring artists. Aptly, the first sketch of the track was laid down by Paavo and Spencer in a Melbourne hotel room - a very, very long way from home.

Says Paavo, “Both Spencer and myself know all too well what it's like being a touring musician.
Filled with totally amazing, high moments, but also lonely moments in hotel rooms far away from home. We'd both been travelling for hours feeling somewhat lost and lonely and ended up spending the day together talking about it all. Later that night, we found ourselves making a song about it all in a makeshift hotel room studio”

Spencer Brown has just finished a world tour with Above & Beyond, playing direct support to crowds across North America, Australasia and Europe. A star on the rise, Spencer is already a mainstay on Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats imprint. The prolific 24 year old released his debut artist album, ‘Illusion Of Perfection’, on the label earlier this year.

Says Spencer, “ “Dream on little dreamer." A message that rung in my head after seeing Above & Beyond, as a fan, in 2014. After signing my music with Anjunabeats in 2016, our musical and personal relationship deepened. We’ve toured the world together. Now, we’ve penned this song - drawing deep from our hearts - about the crazy lives we lead.”

Road-tested and fine-tuned in front of sell-out crowds across Europe, ‘Long Way From Home’ feat. RBBTS is an early Christmas treat for Above & Beyond and Spencer Brown fans. Fans need not wait long for more. Both artists have packed schedules for the remainder of the year.

On our 3rd day in Chiayi we continued our Taiwan food travel adventure, trying some more amazing local Taiwanese street food dishes.

This included Turkey Rice which is the most popular Taiwanese food in Chiayi. It was the perfect Taiwan food breakfast!

We also got the chance to travel out to a wooden theme park where they take the wood from Alishan Mountain to create a crazy wooden experience in a warehouse. Here we got to explore around a very unique side of Taiwan and Taiwan travel vlog our wood experience, making our own Taiwanese chopstick.

We ended the day going to an amazing Taiwan restaurant where they served amazing Teppanyaki style Taiwanese dishes.

Chiayi Taiwan offers to many amazing and must try Taiwan travel and Taiwan food experiences. The local Taiwan food here at Chiayi city are some of the best in the world and is worth having a Taiwan adventure to explore the Taiwanese street food on offer!
