[Social Media Detox Fail & Reflection]
"Get lost and find yourself" they say. I decided to stay at the Sekeping Retreat outside of Kuala Lumpur for one night. No wifi, no reception, no internet. An isolation from the digital world, perfect for social media addicts like myself, to disconnect from my phaneron and re-connect with the real world.
Sadly, there was a landslide to one of the main routes to the retreat. Even though there is an alternative route, I fear that I wouldn't be able to communicate with the taxi driver and contacting the staff there would be difficult due to poor reception. And even if I manage to get there, there's no guarantee that I could get back to the airport on time.
I didn't regret canceling the stay at this internet rehab centre. It wasn't a well planned trip after all.
I did, however, realize all the fears that I had are, ironically, associated with the Internet in one way or another. It might have been a challenging trip but it could have been an opportunity for me to finally talk to people without the help of the Internet entirely.
If anything, I regret not asking around to see if anyone was available to go to the retreat with me. Instagram has empowered me. It enables me to meet up with all these amazing people, like minded or not. I could have used that connection and make the trip happen but I didn't.
Connecting people is one thing, which the Internet is certainly capable of. Truly communicating with real humans is another.
It doesn't matter how advanced our technologies are, or how we name them for that matter. You're not actually conversing if all you're doing is sending messages off a screen named "retina". It doesn't emit signs of communication; it pretends that we're talking by exchanging signs and symbols that are really just 1s and 0s in the digital realm.
At the end, I extended my stay at the Airbnb. It's just much easier that way. The sky pool was nice. Amazing view with comfortable beds. They were so comfortable that I don't wanna leave.
I wonder when I could truly leave the zone, get lost, and find myself.

For those who wanna know what "PNG" represents, here's an explanation (pretty long, you've been warned):
1. The P stands for phaneron, which is my username on Instagram (also see point 9). Phaneron refers to the real world filtered by our sensory input, which you already know (I hope).
2. Of course P can also stand for photography. It makes perfect sense but that's not my intention.
3. NG stands for my last name, pretty straight forward. The N also stands for my initial of my first name.
4. So together and personally, PNG means Nick Ng's Phaneron.
5. PNG can be interpreted as a digital format. I always stick with saving images/visuals in png format.
6. Since I tend to create things digitally, png as a format is a good representation of my works.
7. I intend to use the logo as a "watermark" for my photographs. I'll use the black version for images with a lighter background and vice versa.
8. The logo intends to be a "signature" for my work, such as photographs and graphics and stuff, not me as a person.
9. On another note, I chose the word "phaneron" for my IG username because Instagram, or the digital world for that matter, is all about filters, capturing the world the way you see it and presenting yourself the way you wish.
