After a yearlong hiatus, Ben Simmons is finally prepared to make his regular season debut on Oct. 18. With a season’s worth of training now under his belt, as well as the same physique and skill that made him the No. 1 pick back in 2016, it’s safe to say the Aussie has some lofty expectations.
While Lonzo Ball has been the prohibitive Rookie of the Year favorite all offseason, Simmons’ stellar preseason play has quieted that chatter significantly. He already looks the part of a full-time NBA point guard, and has shown the type of defensive versatility that, in time, could make him a more valuable two-way player than most expected.Even with his strong play thus far, however, Simmons has still be outshined locally by Joel Embiid. The Cameroonian’s 22 point, seven rebound outing against Brooklyn served as a reminder of just how dominant he can be, but that shouldn’t downplay Simmons’ value long term.
Simmons has the potential to become one of the league’s most dynamic playmakers, combining constant mismatches with a basketball I.Q. that’s seldom shown by rookie ball handlers. He’s already advanced beyond his years talent-wise, and gives the Philadelphia 76ers somebody who’s capable of adding another gear to an offense that has stagnated in the past.
