The Power of Fasting and Prayer
God’s word reveals to us that fasting has many benefits, such as it being a channel of healing, health, answered prayers, and a great way to cast out unbelief from our hearts.
I'm sure that if God is leading you to fast, He is preparing you to receive a manifestation of blessing!
One benefit we are going to look at is increased sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s voice. We can sense God’s directions for our lives better when we fast.
When the disciples in the early church fasted, it seems like they became more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. They were able to receive God’s instructions and leading easier. It also helped them to make the right decision when faced with a big task.
“Now in the assembly that was at Antioch there were some prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen the foster brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they served the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Separate Barnabas and Saul for me, for the work to which I have called them.” Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.” (Acts 13:1-3 WEB)
If you are at a crossroads in life and need to make an important decision, the Holy Spirit may lead you to fast to seek God for His guidance and wisdom.
I believe that fasting makes one’s spirit more in tune with the spiritual things of God so we're able to hear from Him with greater clarity.
This is likely because when we fast, we are denying the flesh of its desires and are more focused on the Spirit.
Whenever fasting is mentioned in the Bible, it is mostly combined with prayer. I would liken fasting to an amplifier, making your prayers more effective by casting out unbelief from your heart and also making you more sensitive to the Holy Spirit and what He wants you to pray for.
Do you need to receive wisdom to make an important decision? Maybe you feel like you can’t sense what God wants from you at this point in time. Perhaps it’s time to dedicate a fast to the Lord, and make it a season to receive and hear from Him.
“Let the husband give his wife the affection owed her, and likewise also the wife her husband. The wife doesn’t have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise also the husband doesn’t have authority over his own body, but the wife. Don’t deprive one another, unless it is by consent for a season, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer, and may be together again, that Satan doesn’t tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But this I say by way of concession, not of commandment.” (1 Corinthians 7:3-6 WEB)
The Apostle Paul taught that there are seasons whereby we should put aside fleshly indulgences like physical intimacy with your spouse, and just commit time to fasting and prayer.
The last time I fasted, I had to make a decision whether or not to listen to someone who was many years older than me. He preached God’s word locally and overseas.
After my fast, we met up. I could clearly sense that he was speaking nonsense, and I could easily discern the motivations that were shaping his words. It was obvious that his words were not to be trusted.
If I had listened to him I might have wasted precious years of my life doing something that was not God’s will for me.
Don’t overlook the powerful combination of fasting and prayer. We need to hear clearly from God, especially in difficult seasons and moments of standing at crossroads.

Jesus’ Rhema Word Opens Doors
“Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.” (Psalms 119:105 WEB)
God’s word is a lamp to your feet, not a light switch to the whole house. It means that as you act on the rhema word-in-season that God has given to you, He will reveal more to you as you walk.
“Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.” He said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.” (Matthew 14:28-32 WEB)
There are strong winds blowing and huge waves rolling in the world now, but some people are sinking due to fear, while some are walking upon the waves by faith in God’s rhema word.
Peter’s ability to walk on water came from the word that Jesus spoke: “Come!”
When you act on God’s rhema word which carries His authority, you will experience the power to effect a change in your life.
Are you listening to the world and allowing your heart to melt in fear, or are you attentively listening out for God’s rhema word which is the key for the locked door in this season?
““To the angel of the assembly in Philadelphia write: “He who is holy, he who is true, he who has the key of David, he who opens and no one can shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says these things: “I know your works (behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut), that you have a little power, and kept my word, and didn’t deny my name.” (Revelation 3:7-8 WEB)
Jesus Himself has the key of David that opens doors that no one can shut and closes doors that no one can open.
He uses this key (authority) by speaking to you, whether through the Holy Spirit or through another believer. His words carry authority to open any door.
Listen closely!!
This message is a rhema word for you.

Faithful and Generous God
“Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21 WEB)
Yes it is right to not expect much from fallible man, but you can have full confidence in God!
“For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”” (Romans 10:11)
When God exceeds your prayer request, sometimes you may not realize it at first because it’s different from the picture you conceived in your mind.
However, trust Him because He can see the future. God clearly knows the difference between what is good for you, and what only appears good but will actually cause you to stumble and fall.
Looking back, I am grateful for the way things turned out, and I can see God’s plan in motion, like how a master sculptor skillfully chips away at a rough slab of stone. I am sure many of you can relate to this.
“Jesus answered him, “You don’t know what I am doing now, but you will understand later.”” (John 13:7 WEB)
Looking forward, we may not know what the future holds, but we can trust Jesus that He will cause all things to work together for our good.
Even if you do not understand what He is doing now, you will understand later when you look back at the faithfulness and generosity He has shown in your life!
God makes everything beautiful in its appointed time. This is the revelation that gives peace to a heart that has been shaken by many disappointments. We must understand God’s system of times and seasons to enjoy fruitfulness in every season through His grace that is available to us:
