After I posted on my leave plans on Sunday, a few of you asked what was on my reading list, so I am sharing some books I have read / am reading / or hope to read. Three of the books are available from the National Library Singapore. Do check out the NLB app (iOS: https://go.gov.sg/moiqhc | Android: https://go.gov.sg/hu17bc). It is a marvellous resource, and you will definitely be able to discover many books to suit your interests.
[ Nuclear Folly, a History of the Cuban Missile Crisis
by Serhii Plokhy ]
The Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. I had read "13 Days", the short memoir by Robert Kennedy about it as a teenager, and later Graham Allison's "Essence of Decision", a seminal study using the Crisis to analyse decision making from different perspectives. Both were mainly based on US records. Plokhy's book draws on Soviet archives, to present events from both the US and Soviet points of view. Many mistakes were made on both sides. The saving grace was that both President John Kennedy and General Secretary Nikita Khrushchev desperately wanted to avoid a nuclear war. But even then the two sides avoided a nuclear exchange only by a hair’s breadth, and only by chance, because events once set in motion were no longer entirely within the two leaders' control. A gripping read.
[ The Bilingual Brain, and what it tells us about the science of language
by Albert Costa ]
Having learnt several languages myself, and grappled with our bilingualism policy in schools, this book was a natural choice. I am still reading it. Did you know that a newborn infant already recognises and prefers the language (or languages) which their mother spoke while they were in her womb, and within hours of birth can also distinguish between two different languages that they have never heard before? Infants pick up a language (or two) naturally in their first years, but learning a second or third language later in life is much harder. This book explains why.
[ Capturing Light, the Heart of Photography
by Michael Freeman ]
A book about the different sorts of light, how they influence the photo you take, and how to use them to create the effect and mood that you want. Photographers know about the golden hour and blue hour, hard light and soft light, direct and indirect lighting, front and back lighting, haze, mist and fog, and so many more variations. The book includes lots of the author’s photos illustrating his points, taken over many years. Hope to pick up something from reading it. But the key in photography (as in so many other skills) is to practise and practise, if you want to improve.
[ Bettering Humanomics, A New, and Old, Approach to Economic Science
by Deidre Nansen McCloskey ]
The author, a distinguished economist, argues that economics is not just about incentives and institutions, mathematical models and observed behaviour. It should take a broader, more humanistic approach, paying attention to ethics and values, “what people believe, and the stories they tell one another”, as one reviewer put it. Certainly in government we must think about these broader factors all the time, while making sure we get the economics right. Not just in trade and industry or finance, but also in national development, education, health, manpower, sustainability and the environment, social and family development, and so much of public policy. I haven't read this book yet, but saw an enthusiastic book review, and look forward to reading the book itself.
Happy reading! – LHL

DYAM Mejar Jeneral Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, Tunku Mahkota Johor

Schools are a place to encourage unity amongst Johoreans, not to divide our society. Today I received in audience Encik Abdul Razak bin Hamid, Principal of SMK Dato’ Bentara Luar, Batu Pahat, Tuan Haji Ismail bin Abu, District Officer of Batu Pahat, Tuan Hj Sahilon bin Abdul Halim, Deputy Director JPN (Acting JPN Johor Director) and Dr Suhaimi bin Ismail, Education Officer for Batu Pahat District.
I have been informed of the incident at SMK Dato’ Bentara Luar, Batu Pahat where there was racial segregation for registration of co-curricular activities. I have told the school principal and JPN Johor that this incident should never have happened and it must never happen again in any school in Johor. These actions are not in line with Bangsa Johor that promotes unity of all races under one identity for all Johoreans. Such incidents must be avoided to maintain harmony and unity amongst the people.

We bought a ¥500 baking gun at Daiso. Buying a ¥500 item from a ¥100 store took some courage, but we've always wanted a baking gun (also known as a cookie gun or cookie press). We were worried about being able to use it (we practiced a lot). Mixing the dough was hard but once it's done you can bake cookies that are just like store-bought cookies! We are happy that even if we don't have the fancy, expensive sultane tip... We can still bake romias cookies!
*Recipe* (About 55 cookies, 5cm in diameter.)
Filling (We made a small amount, but there was some excess. It can be stored in the fridge.)
1. Put 15g honey, 15g sugar, and 15g unsalted butter in a small saucepan.
2. When it starts boiling, leave it for a moment, then take it off the heat.
3. Mix in 20g sliced almonds.
4. Place the mixture on a parchment paper and thinly roll it (The ideal thickness is 1.3cm,) then refrigerate it.
Cookie dough.
5. Mix 125g room-temperature unsalted butter.
6. Mix in 50g powdered sugar.
7. Mix in 20g egg whites.
8. Divide the mixture from step 7 in half (About 97g each.)
Vanilla dough.
9. Add a few drops of vanilla oil to one of the mixtures from step 8.
10. Sift 75g low-viscosity flour and 20g almond powder, and mix.
Cocoa dough.
11. Sift 90g low-viscosity flour, 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder, and 1 teaspoon of black cocoa powder, and mix.
12. Put the mixture from step 10 and 11 in the baking gun and squeeze them out. The dough should not be too loose or too firm. You can squeeze them out on a baking mat like Silpat, or on a ¥100-store silicon sheet. You can also squeeze them directly onto the baking sheet, but we avoided this method because it’s messy.
13. Romias cookies: cut the filling from step 4 into about 3mm-thick rings, and put it on top of the cookies from step 12. We were afraid of the filling overflowing, so we put in less this time.
14. Bake for 13 minutes in an oven preheated to 170 degrees.
15. Romias cookies: remove them from the baking mat after they cool down.
Chocolate cookies: leave them for about three minutes after they are finished baking, and add round chocolate pieces on top. If the cookies are too hot, it can cause the chocolate to bloom, so make sure to leave it for a moment before adding the chocolate. I used a 1.3cm white chocolate and a 1.5cm normal chocolate. You can also wait for the cookies to completely cool down, then add melted chocolate to them. I slacked off this time and added them directly. Refrigerate them to harden the chocolate.
16. It's done!
We packed them in plastic cups we bought from the ¥100 store. We also bought the silica gel from the ¥100 store. ¥100 stores are amazing, aren't they? The parchment paper was easy to peel when I used wood bond. We used multi-purpose glue. Please take care not to get the glue on the cookies!

Allen Iverson refused to let the Philadelphia 76ers' season end.
Iverson scored 13 of his 42 points in the fourth quarter as the defending Eastern Conference champions avoided elimination with a tense 108-103 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 3 of their first-round series.
The Sixers avoided a best-of-five series sweep for the first time since 1991 against Milwaukee. They host Game 4 on Wednesday.
Responding in pressure situations is nothing new for Iverson.
"That's my life," Iverson said. "That's just what I've been going through since I've been in the league, so I'm kind of used to it. When we lose, people are going to point the finger at me and coach. And when we win gaems, I get the praise. You just accept that and understand that's the way it's going to be."
It was the eighth time Iverson scored at least 40 points in a playoff game. The Sixers are 7-1 in those contests.
"We have another chance to play and we have to put pressure on them, where they feel it," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "It doesn't look to me like they're feeling it. They're playing with a lot of poise and have a lot to be proud of."
Philadelphia also got a big game from Eric Snow, who scored 23 points. After going a combined 4-of-25 in the first two games of the series, he made 9-of-14 shots in Game 3 and scored six straight points for the Sixers during one stretch in the fourth quarter.
"There was no pressure on them at all," Snow said. "All of the pressure was on us. Fortunately, we were able to pull this game out and now we have to take care of our home and win on Wednesday and even the series."
The Celtics, looking to move into the second round for the first time since 1992, were in position to close out the Sixers, taking a 103-100 lead on Rodney Rogers' 3-pointer with 1:32 remaining. But the Sixers scored the final eight points.
"It's a game we should have had," Boston forward Paul Pierce said. "We're up three with under three minutes to go. We gave ourselves a chance to win after being down in the first half. It's definitely one we should have had."
All season, the Celtics lived by the 3-pointer. On this day, however, they died by it.
Derrick Coleman, who played a strong game with 18 points and nine rebounds, followed Aaron McKie's miss to give Philadelphia a 104-103 lead with 45 seconds left.
Pierce scored 29 points for the Celtics, but missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key on the ensuing possession. Boston was forced to foul, and Iverson hit two more from the line, making it 106-103 with 19 seconds to play.
"I felt that everybody would come out and play the game like it was their last," Iverson said. "But we didn't have a choice. If you can't get up for a game like this, there's something wrong. You're not a basketball player, you're not a competitor."
Rogers and Pierce missed 3-pointers on Boston's last possession, and Coleman clinched the win with two from the line with 1.1 seconds to go.
"It's now Game 4," Pierce said. "We expected a war. We didn't expect Philly to bow down to us in Game 3. We expect another war for the next game."
Antoine Walker scored 27 points for Boston but was shut out from 3-point range in the second half after making all seven of his attempts from behind the arc in the opening 24 minutes. He finished 7-of-13 from downtown.
"We feel like we're still very confident we can beat them here," Walker said. "Obviously, they're going to feel really good and come out with a lot of energy on Wednesday. We have to be prepared and ready to match their energy again."
While the Sixers never have rallied to win a best-of-five series after losing the first two games, they have renewed hopes since Iverson seems to have shaken off the rust after missing the final 14 games of the regular season with a broken hand.
The NBA scoring champion rebounded from a shaky outing in Game 2, when he made just 10-of-29 shots. He took over Sunday's contest down the stretch, scoring 11 of the Sixers' final 15 points, and was deadly from the line, making 19-of-20 free throws.
"We had big games from a lot of people," Iverson said. "To beat a team like that, you're going to have to have a lot of guys contribute."
Overall, Philadelphia was 36-of-44 from the line, compared to just 16-of-18 for Boston, which ran most of its offense from the perimeter. The Sixers shot 45 percent (33-of-74).
"We didn't get the calls," Boston guard Kenny Anderson said. "We can't cry about it, but we didn't get the calls."
Spurred on by a fired-up crowd at the First Union Center, the Sixers opened an 11-point lead in the first quarter. Boston withstood Philadelphia's early burst and Walker's shooting helped it close to 58-52 at intermission.
The Celtics tried to bury the Sixers with a long-range assault, making 15 of 30 3-pointers, a playoff record for a Philadelphia opponent.
