Contained by steep slopes and cliffs around, Maliau Basin is isolated from the rest of the world. This is Sabah’s Lost World.
Maliau Basin is home to more than 2000 species of animals and plants and is an excellent destination for jungle trekking and bird watching. Did you know there are more than 290 bird species that you can find here? If you are lucky, you can find all 8 hornbills of Borneo here in Maliau!

“A huge bowl of pristine forests described as one of the few remaining relatively untouched wilderness areas in the world.” -@maliaubasin

📍 Maliau Basin
Maliau Basin, “Sabah’s Lost World” is one of Borneo’s least travelled gems. It is a bowl of pristine forest encircled by insurmountable cliffs and steep slopes up to 1,500m in height. The whole basin is a single water catchment drained by numerous tributaries of the Maliau River. While the local Murut people have known about the area, it has remained relatively untouched by the Western world for centuries. It was not until 1988 that a major scientific expedition explored this virtually self-contained ecosystem. Filled with plentiful waterfalls and an abundance of wildlife - over 2,000 recorded types of fauna and flora - Maliau Basin Conservation Area is one of the few remaining relatively untouched wilderness areas in the world.

If you look at the satellite view of Maliau Basin you will find that it is shaped almost circular amphitheatre with about 25kms across. It has sides of cliffs or steep slopes up to around 1600m high. Because of its unique geological bowl formation of the basin, it creates a massive water catchment therefore, it houses the highest number of spectacular waterfalls per unit area in the whole of Malaysia.
And that is why this place gets top in our #TravelLater plan. What about you?

Central America and Mexico are known for their diverse landscapes of mountains, deserts and beautiful beaches. Find out about seven unmissable experiences you should try in the region .
Adrenaline seekers make the 40-minute trek up Cerro Negro’s shadeless slopes to the smoking crater where they don coveralls and goggles, mount a wooden board and whizz down a steep incline of black ash to the bottom at speeds of 40-60mph (60-100 kph. One of the best places to practice volcano surfing in the world, Nicaragua’s Cerro Negro is a bucket-list must. Head to the Mexican town of San Juan de la Vega for the Exploding Hammer Festival, which takes place every February. It involves strapping home-made explosives to sledgehammers and smashing them into the ground. It can be quite dangerous, so don’t get too close! Rio Celeste is located in the Tenorio Volcano National Park in the Costa Rican province of Alajuela. In the past, visitors were allowed to swim in the river, but it is now prohibited within the park for safety reasons. While you may not be able to take a dip here, seeing this spectacular and surreal blue river is an absolute must when visiting this part of the country. Before becoming the it destination of the travel bloggerati, Las Coloradas was just a sleepy fishing village on the Yucatán coast with a penchant for salt production that dated back to the Mayan period. The pink colour comes from the algae, plankton and brine shrimp that reside in the waters of Las Coloradas and become visible as the water evaporates under the beating Mexican sun. The Sloth Sanctuary is located between Limon and Cahuita on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. The 320-acre (130-hectare) private nature reserve was previously called Aviarios del Caribe. You can get to the sanctuary via rental car, by taking a Sansa Airlines flight to Limon followed by a taxi ride, hopping on an Interbus via route Limon/Cahuita/Hone Creek/Puerto Viejo (let the driver know you are going to the sanctuary and you can get dropped off right at the gate), or by hiring a private shuttle van. Stay on a private island in this Airbnb in Belize. Search for Little Peter Oasis and have your own personal bungalow, floating on the Caribbean Sea. Welcome to our final episode of our Hawai'i 5-0 trip!
In 2009, sustainable forestry company HLH, planted a single koa tree on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Since then, thousands of individuals have joined in the reforestation effort by planting more than 400,000 rare, endemic trees creating nearly 1,200 acres of pristine native habitat. This land is now known as the @hawaiianlegacyforest.
If there’s something else that @joelebosi loves, it is mountains and volcanoes.
Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano and is the highest peak in the Hawaiian islands. When measured from its oceanic base, it is the tallest mountain in the world rising to 13, 796 feet above sea level.
Our tour guide Bear of @arnottslodgeandhikingadventure , was very patient, informative and entertaining. Plus, he was an expert driving us up to the summit safely and in comfort inside his 4wd (some roads were really bumpy and steep!).
Finally, the ultimate surprise for Azmi as we glide high in the skies. Enjoy and comment below ... we'd love to hear from you!
