ในปี 2503 ผู้สมัครประธานาธิบดีสหรัฐ ฯ คนหนึ่งที่ชื่อว่า นายจอห์น เอฟ เคนเนดี แสดงวิสัยทัศน์ในการชิงชัยตำแหน่งประธานาธิบดีสหรัฐ ฯ ด้วยแนวนโยบาย “เขตแดนใหม่” หรือ The New Frontier โดยการประกาศจะนำประเทศเอาชนะความยากจน ภัยสงคราม และ อุปสรรคต่าง ๆ ด้วยวิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยี และ การเข้าสู่ยุคสำรวจอวกาศ จนถึงวันนี้ ในปี พ.ศ. 2562 ระยะเวลาผ่านมา 59 ปี อวกาศไม่ได้เป็นเพียงแค่เขตแดนของการแข่งขันเพื่อแสดงความยิ่งใหญ่ทางการเมืองอีกต่อไป รวมถึง อวกาศก็ไม่ใช่เพียงแค่เรื่องของประเทศมหาอำนาจเท่านั้น หากแต่ขอบเขตของอวกาศก้าวเข้ามาอย่างลึกซึ้งถึงชีวิตประจำวันตั้งแต่ตื่นนอน ทำงาน จนกระทั่งเข้านอน จากดาวเทียมในอวกาศอันไกลโพ้นจนกระทั่งมาถึงเตียงนอนของเรา การสังเกตการณ์ทิศทางลมและการเคลื่อนที่ของกลุ่มเมฆทำให้เราสามารถวางแผนการเดินทางล่วงหน้าได้ในการรับมือกับสภาพอากาศที่จะเกิดขึ้นในวันถัดไป จากโรงจอดรถของเรากระทั่งไปถึงห้องประชุม เราสามารถคาดการณ์การจราจรที่จะเกิดขึ้นและวางแผนในการเดินทางโดยการใช้ GPS ในมือของเราที่เชื่อมต่อไปถึงดาวเทียมในอวกาศ ในบ้านของเรา เราดูโทรทัศน์หรือหน้าจอมือถือจับจ้องการเคลื่อนตัวของตลาดหุ้นทั่วโลกเพื่อหาโอกาสลงทุนจากการขึ้นลงของตลาดหลักทรัพย์ในโลกอันผันผวน

บทบาทของอวกาศแห่งศตวรรษที่ 21 แตกต่างอย่างสิ้นเชิงกับเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในศตวรรษที่แล้ว ในศตวรรษนี้ ภาคเอกชนจากทั่วโลกได้เข้ามามีบทบาทอย่างสูงยิ่งในการขับเคลื่อนและขยายเขตแดนธุรกิจอวกาศ ปัจจัยทางธุรกิจได้เข้ามาแทนที่ปัจจัยทางการเมืองในการขยายเขตแดนในอวกาศของภาคส่วนต่าง ๆ ของหลายประเทศ ในสหรัฐ ฯ Richard Branson สามารถขายตั๋วของบริษัท Virgin Galactic ได้มากกว่า 600,000 ใบ ในการให้บริการขึ้นไปสัมผัสประสบการณ์อวกาศไม่ถึง 20 นาที ซึ่งเป็นการขายดีมากกว่าที่ Henry Ford เปิดตัวรถยนต์ฟอร์ด รุ่นที เป็นครั้งแรกในสหรัฐ ฯ ขณะที่ บริษัท SpaceX กลายเป็นเอกชนที่รับจ้างขนของไปอวกาศเป็นประจำ และ นาย Elon Musk ผู้ก่อตั้งประกาศจะต้องพิชิตดาวอังคารให้ได้ก่อนตนเองสิ้นอายุขัย ด้านนาย Jeff Bezos ผู้ก่อตั้งบริษัท Amazon และบริษัท Blue Origin ก็ให้บริการขนส่งวางดาวเทียมเข้าวงโคจรในทุก ๆ ขนาด

ในส่วนของประเทศไทย นอกจากบริษัทไทยคมที่ดำเนินธุรกิจด้านดาวเทียมมาเป็นเวลานานแล้ว ยังมีบริษัท มิว สเปซ ที่เข้ามาทำธุรกิจดาวเทียมและชุดอวกาศ เมื่อเดือนกรกฏาคม 2561 ด้วยความร่วมมือของจิสด้า บริษัท มิวสเปซ และ บริษัท Blue Origin ของ Jeff Bezos ประเทศไทยประสบความสำเร็จเป็นประเทศแรกของโลกในการนำทุเรียนตราช้างอวกาศขึ้นสู่วงโคจรโลกด้วยจรวด New Shepard ของบริษัท Blue Origin ซึ่งทะยานตัวออกจากพื้นโลกที่ฐานยิงในมลรัฐเวสท์เท็กซัส แม้แต่นักศึกษาจำนวน 10 คนของมหาวิทยาลัย Southern California ยังสามารถส่งจรวดระดับเยาวชนขึ้นสู่อวกาศได้สำเร็จเป็นครั้งแรกของโลกเมื่อวันที่ 21 เมษายน 2562 ซึ่งความสำเร็จนี้คงจะทำให้ ดร. Wernher von Braun ดีใจเป็นอย่างมาก ขณะเดียวกันก็คงจะทำให้นาย Nikita Khrushchev ถึงกับหัวใจวาย หากว่าบุคคลทั้งสองยังคงมีชีวิตอยู่

ความเคลื่อนไหวของทุกภาคส่วนไม่ว่าจะเป็นภาครัฐ ภาคเอกชนหรือบุคคลทั่วไปเหล่านี้เป็นประจักษ์หลักฐานที่ไม่สามารถปฏิเสธได้ว่า เขตแดนอวกาศเป็นโอกาสของมวลมนุษยชาติทุกคนสมดังวิสัยทัศน์ที่ประธานาธิบดีเคนเนดีได้กล่าวไว้เมื่อเกือบ 60 ปีที่แล้วและโอกาสนี้กำลังขยายตัวและเติบโตมากขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็ว ประเด็นสำคัญก็คือ ทำอย่างไรจึงจะสามารถเข้าไปมีส่วนร่วมในเขตแดนใหม่นี้ได้ ? คำตอบที่อยู่ในคำปราศรัยรับเป็นตัวแทนพรรคเดโมแครตในการแข่งขันชิงตำแหน่งประธานาธิบดีสหรัฐ ฯ คนที่ 35 ซึ่งชี้ว่า กุญแจไปสู่เขตแดนใหม่คือ วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี หรือ ที่ในขณะนี้เราเรียกอย่างบูรณาการว่า STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในแกนองค์ความรู้ของทักษะแห่งศตวรรษที่ 21 นั่นเอง

จากหลักการและเหตุผลดังกล่าวข้างต้น ศูนย์อวกาศและจรวดแห่งชาติสหรัฐ ฯ โดยการปูพื้นฐานด้านวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีจาก ดร. Wernher von Braun บิดาแห่งการลงจอดบนดวงจันทร์และผู้นำในการสร้างจรวด Saturn V และ การเป็นศูนย์ข้อมูลประชาชนของศูนย์การบินอวกาศมาร์แชลขององค์การบริหารการบินและอวกาศแห่งชาติหรือนาซา และ เป็นที่ตั้งของพิพิธภัณฑ์จรวดที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลกของสมิธโซเนียน จึงร่วมกับองค์กรพันธมิตรในประเทศไทยในการก่อตั้งทุนการศึกษาค้นพบนักบินอวกาศไทย (Discover Thailand’s Astronauts Scholarship Program) เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้เยาวชนไทยอายุระหว่าง 13-18 ปี ได้มีโอกาสเข้าร่วมกิจกรรม STEM เพื่อชิงทุนการศึกษาด้านการสำรวจอวกาศเบื้องต้น โดยผู้ที่ชนะทุนการศึกษาจะได้มาเรียนและฝึกปฏิบัติการด้านอวกาศที่ศูนย์อวกาศและจรวดแห่งชาติสหรัฐ ซึ่งนับว่าเป็นศูนย์ฝึกปฏิบัติการด้าน STEM ที่ดีที่สุดของโลก โดยผู้เรียนจะได้ลงมือปฏิบัติการเสมือนจริงในภาระกิจอวกาศ การขับยานอวกาศขึ้นไปยัง ISS ดวงจันทร์ หรือ ดาวอังคาร และ กลับมายัง Kennedy Space Center รวมถึง การออกแบบและยิงจรวด เป็นต้น ทั้งนี้ ผู้เรียนจะได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากศิษย์เก่าที่ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างเช่น Elon Musk ผู้ก่อตั้ง SpaceX นาย Jeff Bezos ผู้ก่อตั้งบริษัท Blue Origin นักบินอวกาศที่ปฏิบัติงานอยู่ในองค์กรอวกาศสำคัญ ๆ ทั่วโลก ไม่ว่าจะเป็น NASA หรือ ESA และ วิศวกรที่ทำงานอยู่ในแขนงงานต่าง ๆ ทั่วโลก รวมถึง ที่ออกแบบและสร้างหุ่นยนต์ Curiosity และ ยานอวกาศรุ่นถัดไปของสหรัฐ ฯ หรือ Space Launch System

ประวัติศาสตร์ชี้ชัดว่าอารยธรรมของมนุษย์ขับเคลื่อนด้วยการสำรวจและการค้นพบ โคลัมบัสค้นพบทวีปอเมริกาทำให้เกิดประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาและการสร้างอารยธรรมเสรีนิยมประชาธิปไตยที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดของมวลมนุษยชาติ ในอนาคตอีกไม่ไกลนัก การสำรวจและค้นพบที่ยิ่งใหญ่ในอวกาศจะทำให้เกิดแรงขับเคลื่อนทางเศรษฐกิจอย่างมหาศาลที่ยิ่งใหญ่กว่าการค้นพบทวีปอเมริกา

The New Frontier for Explorers
.
Bangkok, Aug 29, 2019 – In 1960, Presidential hopeful John F. Kennedy envisioned America as the “New Frontier” for motivation to overcome poverty, war and social challenges. He challenged America to focus instead on advancement of science, technology and the entry into the era of space exploration. Fifty-nine years have passed, and in 2019 space is neither a frontier of competition between the two superpowers, nor is it reserved only for powerful states. Instead, this New Frontier has permeated human life from the time we wake-up until the time we go to bed. From the satellites far away in space to our living rooms, we see the direction of the wind and clouds that help us plan our days in advance of the coming weather. From our own garage to our meeting places, we see the traffic and plan the roads we want to take from the GPS in our hands that is linked to the satellites in space. From our home, we watch satellite television news that advises us on investing, from the ups, and downs, of Wall Street to a volatile world on the main streets.

Unlike the 20th Century, space of the 21st Century introduced private entities to the space industry. Driven by business, not political reasons, private companies from all over the world entered into this potentially lucrative frontier. In America, Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic has sold over 600,000 tickets for a less than 20-minute low earth orbit space experience; it sells like Henry Ford offering his Model-T for the first time. SpaceX has become a frequent flyer into space with an aim to touch-down on the surface of Mars
within the lifetime of its founder, Elon Musk. Meanwhile, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, the Blue Origin founder, launches his rockets with satellites providing launch capabilities of every size.

In Thailand, in addition to established Thaicom, we see Mu Space Corp entering in to the satellite and space suit business. On July 2018, with the cooperation of Thailand’s Gistda, Mu Space and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin, the world witnessed for the first time Space Elephant’s Space Durian. The first Thai Durian entered the globe’s orbit using the propulsion of the Blue Origin’s new Shepard and was launched from a pad in West Texas. Even a group of 10 college students at Southern California University successfully launched their own student rocket and surpassed the Karman Line on April 21, 2019. Wernher von Braun would be overjoyed, and Nikita Khrushchev would have a heart attack if they were still living.

These current movements of the states, private enterprises and people are vivid, undeniable evidence that the Space Frontier belongs to us all as it was envisioned by President Kennedy almost 60 years ago, and the opportunity is expanding quickly. The key question: how can we participate and be a part in this promising New Frontier? In his acceptance speech as the democratic nominee running for President, Kennedy pointed out that science and technology, or in today’s wording, “STEM,” are the keys to access the New
Frontier.

To encourage the industry and promise of living and working in space, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center was founded on science and technology laid down by Dr. Wernher von Braun, the American father of the moon landing. This Official Visitor Center for NASAMarshall Space Flight Center showcases the world’s largest rocket and spacecraft collection. A Smithsonian affiliate, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center has partnered with Thailand to offer
Discover Thailand’s Astronauts Scholarship Program. This challenge locates Thai youths,between 13-19 years old, and trains them at the Advanced Space Academy at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama for one week. This introduction to the space exploration program is the world’s top space STEM curriculum, with one million graduates worldwide. The trainees are trained in simulated missions based on NASA astronaut training. They fire rockets they build, and visit the International Space Station, and even land spacecraft on the Moon and Mars. The trainees are inspired by successful alumni such as Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and others who are now working as astronauts or engineers in many fields, including those designing and building Curiosity Rover and the next great American spacecraft, the Space Launch System.

History has shown us that human civilization is driven by exploration and discovery. The discovery of the American continent brought the United States into existence and created humanity’s largest liberal democratic civilization. In the future, history may tell us that a great discovery in space created a gigantic migration of people and commerce greater than the discovery of the American continent.
