Every parent of a sick child is in search of a ray of hope. So for the parents of Heng Heng, a little boy from #Malaysia suffering from leukemia, finding someone like Dr. Huang Fang-liang, head of hematology and oncology at Taichung Veterans General Hospital, who doesn't believe in giving up until all the possible options have been exhausted, led them to uproot their lives during the pandemic to seek out treatment in #Taiwan.

In Taiwan we know that cancer and other serious illnesses don't go away in turbulent times, and we've persevered in our mission to help those in need around the world, bringing 300 people to Taiwan for treatment since January of last year!

英國癌友染新冠後腫瘤全消失！專家推測：病毒刺激體內免疫細胞

▪ 淋巴癌患者罹患新冠後癌症不藥而癒

這名61歲的嚴重腎病患者，在住院接受治療時發現患有晚期霍奇金淋巴瘤，而且身體各處都有活躍的癌細胞。更糟的是，確診不久他又因為呼吸困難再次住院，被診斷出患上了新冠肺炎。在醫院住院11天后，他的症狀得到緩解，出院在家中休養。期間沒有用過任何免疫化療和類固醇治療。

神奇的是，四個月之後，PET/CT檢測發現他體內的腫瘤大部分都消失了，與腫瘤相關的數值也下降了90%以上。

這個結果出乎人們的意料之外。2020年6月，同樣發表於《BJH》的一篇文章曾經回顧了迄今為止有關血液癌患者感染新冠病毒後發生並發症的證據，並提出由於免疫力下降，血液癌患者可能會在感染新冠後遭受更嚴重的臨床結局。

▪ 曾有淋巴癌患者在罹患肺炎、結腸炎後腫瘤消失

不過，淋巴腫瘤「自癒」的案件並不是第一例。2012年在《Clinical Lymphoma, Myeloma & Leukemia》發布的一篇文章中，一名大B細胞淋巴瘤患者在得了肺炎和結腸炎後，腫瘤也自發消失了。當時的研究者猜測，抗腫瘤免疫反應可能是導致腫瘤自發緩解的潛在原因。

基於之前的案例，在這篇文章中，研究人員猜測可能是新冠感染引發了患者體內的抗腫瘤免疫反應，從而導致腫瘤的消退，作用機制可能是T細胞與腫瘤抗原的交叉反應以及感染時產生的炎性細胞因子，活化了抗癌的免疫細胞。

▪ 疫苗以及病毒感染似乎能活化體內免疫細胞

並不是說明新冠病毒，或者其它病原體可以用來治療癌症。受到感染後腫瘤消失的病例雖然發生過，但是仍然非常罕見。然而，透過活化人體免疫反應來治療癌症和其它疾病的理念卻已經在試驗中得到證實。

上世紀20年代開發成功的卡介苗，接種卡介苗的兒童的死亡率比沒有接種疫苗的兒童要低4倍。值得注意的是這個死亡率是所有原因導致的死亡率，而不是因為結核病導致的死亡率。

隨後，研究人員在口服小兒麻痺疫苗，麻疹疫苗中都發現了類似的現象。在2016年，世界衛生組織（WHO）對前人研究的系統性分析表明，卡介苗和麻疹疫苗在降低死亡率方面的效果高於單純預防結核病或麻疹得到的預期值，顯示它們可能具有防護其它疾病的潛力。

▪「病毒感染」治療癌症已有前例

而卡介苗在上世紀80年代取代手術切除，成為治療早期原位膀胱癌的首選療法。只要滿足患者免疫系統正常，腫瘤負荷較小，卡介苗能夠直接接觸到腫瘤，而且用藥劑量足夠的條件，卡介苗治療能夠在70%的患者中消除腫瘤。

目前，卡介苗作為免疫療法治療早期膀胱癌的機理還沒有得到完全的澄清，不過科學家們認為最可能的機制是卡介苗通過感染腫瘤細胞，激發了人體的免疫反應。這些免疫反應包括干擾素等多種細胞因子的生成，以及細胞毒性T細胞、自然殺傷細胞、巨噬細胞產生的抗癌免疫反應，從而導致腫瘤的破壞。

如今新興的「溶瘤病毒」領域也是遵從這一理念，通過感染腫瘤，不但能夠直接殺傷細胞，而且還可以活化人體對腫瘤的免疫反應。儘管目前尚不清楚導致這位淋巴瘤患者腫瘤消退的具體機制，但是這篇報告為人們進一步了解COVID-19的相關信息提供了參考，同時也有助於未來研究人員挖掘出更有效的癌症免疫療法。

During his latest interview with Turner Sports sideline reporter Craig Sager, Philadelphia 76ers legend Allen Iverson took a moment to give his interviewer a heartfelt message.

There has been an outpouring of support throughout the sports world since Sager shared his diagnosis, with Iverson's being the latest. While Sager has to deal with the situation himself, seeing all of the love he has gotten has to help him push through the tough times and continue to fight.
