現在最負盛名的前掠翼機當屬Sukhoi的大寶貝S-37無疑。S-37
無論在地上或者飛起來看起來都很勇猛，先前方面美國則有一
架實驗機X-29，飛起來是不錯，不過放在地上的時候有點呆，
整個飛機滿車庫的…
那麼前掠翼的F-16呢？我個人在看到網站上的圖的時候差一點
笑出來。因為是主翼在前，尾翼在後的傳統佈局，F-16/SFW看
起來比X-29還要好笑。主翼和尾翼分別指向前後，感覺頗為鬆
散。
1976年DARPA 選定通用動力、洛克威爾、格魯曼三家公司進行
前掠翼計畫(Forward-Swept Wing Program)的初期競標。通用
動力研究了幾種設計，包括一種主翼後置並有前翼的構形（這
也就是後來X-29和S-37採用的這一種）。最後送交給DARPA 的
設計採用了F-16的起落架和大部分的機體構件，但機身稍微加
長些，並且也強化，以裝置較原有主翼稍大的前掠主翼。
1981年1 月，DARPA 選定格魯曼712 案為實驗機的設計，繼續
進行前掠翼計畫。這架F-5/F-20的變形設計就是後來的X-29A。
基本上這是個政治決定，原因是F-16在NASA的研究計畫中用得
太多了(F-16/AFTI, F-16/CCV, F-16XL) ，其他的意見則認為
利用同一架飛機、同一型機體做的研究太多，會有盲點存在。
因此最後X-29出線，而F-16/SFW就被湮沒在歷史的塵煙之中。
諷刺的是，X-29有16% 的零件來自F-16，包括線傳飛控在內。
