分詞構句這玩意兒，其實很多文法門派呢；至於我，我偏好以下解說法：
分詞構句：
*. 只要兩個句子放在一起沒有連接詞，就可以使用分詞構句，步驟如下：
1) 去掉同S、
2) 動詞改為Ving、
3) 若Ving為being，則可省。[不省表示「原因」]
[分詞前句表示「先後」，後句表示「同時」]
Ex. The boy turned in the same paper, the boy made no changes at all.
--> The boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. [步驟1、2]
Ex. Tom was caught cheating on the exam, Tom was punished.
--> (Being) caught cheating on the exam, Tom was punished. [步驟1、2、3]
同時因為「分詞構句」有adv性質，所以可以再分詞前加入一個適當的adv連接詞，目的是
加強前後句的邏輯關係。
Ex. I hate him, I have to talk to him.
--> Hating him, I have to talk to him.[步驟1、2，但是邏輯性只有先後，文意不清]
--> Although hating him, I have to talk to him.
[加入了Although，前後文意清楚許多]

所以本來句子是：
Mrs. Cohen has demonstrated repeatedly that she excels +

經過以上步驟1、2、3成為：
Mrs. Cohen has demonstrated repeatedly that she excels faced with a challenge.
然後加上一個副詞連接詞when來加強邏輯意思：
Mrs. Cohen has demonstrated repeatedly that she excels when faced with a
challenge.

merge當vi，所以當然沒有被動，既然如此merged就不會是答案了。
merge with跟join in有點兒像，這樣想希望可以幫到你的忙。
