一九五二年三月一日，大陸以慰問東頭木屋區火災災民為由，單方面派出「粵穗慰問團」赴港，但港英政府拒絕讓其入境；數千名在尖沙嘴九龍火車站迎接的左派支持者，隨後四散騷亂，史稱「粵穗慰問團事件」或「三一事件」。事件背後，是中英之間一場「反帝反殖」攻防戰，意味香港深度捲入東西方兩種意識形態的冷戰。

談打交替的鴉片戰爭——蔣廷黻《中國近代史》 ｜ 知史百家

《鴉片戰爭》一課的新課標要求在虎門銷煙和南京條約兩處。
但是我們要讓學生更深刻了解近代中國面臨的大變局，大問題，鴉片戰爭過程中，中英之間的對決狀況是一個很有價值的內容，也是個繞不過的話題，也是個讓學生很容易理解的內容，在《中國近代史》這本書中蔣廷黻把鴉片戰爭分為三個階段，也描述了這三個階段之間是如何交替進行的，這對於學生理解當時中國的國情，是很有幫助的。
第一個階段是林則徐主政時期。
林則徐果斷禁煙，英國政府為了商貿利益主動開戰，不斷北上直到天津。
從英軍封鎖珠江口到佔領定海，北上到大沽口，威脅清政府。清政府驚慌失措，開始怨恨林則徐沒辦成什麼事情，反而招來這麼大禍端。於是向英國人許諾，只要他們撤兵回到廣州，查辦林則徐其他的都好商量。英軍竟然撤兵回廣州了。這樣進入——
第二個階段是琦善主政時期。
琦善與英國人和戰。在天津琦善仔細勘察了英軍的狀況，提出必須和談，但是到廣州後發現和談並不簡單，除了查辦林則徐這一招外，其餘英國提出條件：賠款、割地、通商口岸，他都沒有辦法答應。但是英國人揚言不達目的，要進攻廣州城。琦善只有一邊拖延時日，一邊備戰。英國人著了急，乾脆開戰，中國的海防根本不行，虎門失守。琦善與英國人草擬條約，賠款600萬兩、割香港島等。皇帝聽聞大怒：甘受逆夷欺負戲弄，迷而不返。實出情理之外，是何肺腑，無能不堪之至。降旨革職鎖拿。
第三個階段就是皇帝親自主政階段，決計與英國開戰。
結果調集的軍隊有的未戰即逃，有的臨陣脫逃，也有的誓死抵抗，但是結果就是英軍佔領了鎮海、吳淞、鎮江，兵臨南京城下。此種戰況清政府又一次向英軍求和。遂《南京條約》簽訂。
總結下來就是打打不贏，談談不攏。打不贏是軍事上的水平懸殊太大，談不攏的原因是清政府對整個時局，對自己都不清楚。最終，談是割地賠款，戰的結果是割地賠款等更加苛刻的條件。中國人的落後孱弱，導致處處無奈。
失敗是客觀的不如人，是注定的。但是失敗之後如果還不能看到自己努力的方向，那就更加悲哀了。清政府當時就是這樣，結果又錯失了二十年的大好發展時光，二十年之後的時局又有了新的變化。蔣先生對當時清政府的痛恨之極，即在此處。
