Forgiveness means to let go and to breathe. Not forgiving is like holding on to your breath but the thing is, you can't hold your breath forever! Forgiving is a means of gaining peace in your life where you will stop feeling angry, hurt and where you are in a position of strength where you do not let your feelings control you.

Forgiving does not mean that you need to be best friends with the one who hurt you, it means more power to you as you can heal and move on with life.

Here are some tips on how to practice the art of forgiveness.
1. Look at it as a gift that will bring you peace and not a gift to someone else.
2. Look at the benefits and stay positive, what did you learn?
3. Your distress comes from your thoughts and feelings not what happened to you 20 years ago or 2 mins ago.
4. You learn not to be like the one who harmed you.
5. Empathize with the one who hurt you and think - maybe there was a reason or maybe this person needs help/has issues.
6. Finally put more energy to kindness and love and focus on what you have!

Abdullah Ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was upon the pulpit and he said:
ارْحَمُوا تُرْحَمُوا وَاغْفِرُوا يَغْفِرْ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ
Be merciful to others and you will receive mercy. Forgive others and Allah will forgive you. (Musnad Ahmad: 7001)
