In the ongoing fight against COVID-19, teachers have adapted their ways of teaching to engage students both online and offline. Many teachers are parents themselves, and also have to cope with caring for children and family members during the pandemic. Yet they have stayed focused on the welfare of their students, and given them encouragement and guidance.
We owe teachers immense thanks for staying resilient and providing steadfast support to their students during this unsettling time, in the classroom and beyond. You can read stories from students and parents on how teachers have nurtured the hearts and minds of our youth today, or pen your own message of thanks at https://ThankYouCher.edu.sg.
I hope that teachers, students and parents will use these September school holidays to recharge for the next term. Happy Teachers’ Day to all our wonderful teachers! – LHL

Honoured to be serving on the 12th COMPASS (COMmunity and PArents in Support of Schools) Council whose role is to advise the MOE on ways in which school-home-community collaboration could be strengthened and promoted. When I first received the invite, I accepted it without any hesitation because admittedly, education is an area that holds diverse opinions among parents in Singapore. And it is something I want to make a difference in as well.
The first meeting I participated in already gave me a glimpse of the mammoth task that is front of us. There're no easy answers, only more questions but what I would like to see is more support being offered to parents of secondary school children. Parenting younger kids is okay but once they become teens and go to secondary schools, that's when everything starts to become challenging - studies, friends, BGR, screentime, stress, acceptance, bullying... It's endless. Not only do the teens need help, but I suspect parents need help too. So I would like to see how we can better engage the parents and support them in their parenting journey. And of course, more needs to be done in the areas of mental wellness among students too.
If you have any constructive suggestions along the way, I will love to hear them too! Let's work together for the sake of our kids' future education. 😊

In our day and age, with so much online content, digital parenting has become ever more relevant. Now that our girls are savvy in using our gadgets for browsing websites and playing with apps, how do we make sure they navigate the internet safely while we embrace social media as a family?
We can all learn more about digital parenting from two upcoming webinars on 28 Nov (free, registration required) co-organised by the Media Literacy Council. One is presented by TikTok and include useful tips and activities that parents can do with their children on the popular video-sharing app. Another is by LEGO, sharing practical tips and play-based techniques that parents can use to teach their children about online risks, and to guide them to go digital in a safe, smart and kind manner.
These webinars are part of SG:Digital Wonderland, an annual flagship event hosted by the Infocomm Media Development Authority - IMDA to raise awareness on emerging tech and to promote digital literacy among Singaporeans.
Held on 28-29 Nov online, these live-streaming activities and virtual workshops are curated specially for families and individuals from different age groups. Parents can learn how to better engage their children on social media and discover ways to navigate the Internet safely. I would strongly encourage parents to attend.

Welcome again to Yayasan Pillar Shared Giving or #KongsiBersedekah program.
This is our 5th series where we cover more city poor families and houses in Semariang area, specifically this time in kpg sg midin.
This time we met and chatted with a 12 years old boy named Fikri, son to Romie and a brother to Wardina aged 15.
As the mother was out working when we visited their house, we caught up with their 12 year old son.
We handed out food package under our Shared Giving program and interestingly found out from the brother that his sister Wardina has not been going to classes regularly for a year.
Reason given was she had no means of getting to school.
One very disturbing fact is the condition this family and many other families here found themselves in.
Everyway you turn outside their houses, under their houses, by the roadside, and open spaces are rubbish dump.
Children play and eat among heaps of rubbish.
Their houses are like stinking pits with little room to breathe or move.
We also included in our list of Shared Giving another family because of historical record they maintained, where 4 out of 6 school aged children left school prematurely.
Puan Hasnah's 2 sons and 2 daughters left school before they finished.
When asked why?
The mother simply answered "we gave our children choice to continue schooling or quit and find a job."
"We advised our children to continue study but if they refuse, we would not force them."
This family is considered reasonably ok economically as the father has steady job and earning above RM1000 per month.
They do not fall under the category of city poor in Yayasan Pillar's list.
Another family is a single mother with 2 children.
Puan Norlidah bt Abdullah has a medical case of liver malfunction, therefore cannot work and desperately need financial help.
She is not getting any kind of aid from government agencies as she just didn't know how to follow up again on her application for assistance.
She keeps no record of her application.
Yayasan Pillar handed out Food Baskets to all the families and offer to assist them follow up with government agencies for assistance where they are eligible or where they have been overlooked.
Briefly the problems shackling these families are poverty, poor health, filthy surrounding, broken down houses and the sheer lack of will by parents to ensure children finished their school.
I shudder to think what future these children will have?
Why are these deplorable conditions of city poor still allowed to go on for years?
Whose responsibility?
Parents? Local YB? Or our system?
One of the ways Yayasan Pillar helps the city poor is through its #KongsiBersedekaH program. The objective of #KongsiBersedekaH is to get community to engage in sharing the arduous burden faced by city poor families on a daily basis. If you wish to help lighten their burden, please don't hesitate to donate to lessen the daily PAIN faced by city poor. ?
