The SAT Summer Intensive courses have all wrapped up now.
It was so intense! Such a high proportion of the students were high achievers and refused to pass up on any learning opportunity.
That attitude to learning is something we should all strive to emulate. Don't be satisfied with simply getting the right answer. Work on all aspects of the passages, questions, and answers until you have grasped not only the correct answers (and why they're correct) but also the incorrect answers (and why they're incorrect).
If you do that, then and only then will you have mastered the test.
In a nutshell:
Never stop reading.
Never stop searching.
Never stop questioning.
Never stop until you have gained complete understanding.
Do well on the upcoming SAT test, everybody.
I look forward to hearing about your amazing scores!

(Vol.4)
Allegations of fake university degree haunt Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike (vol.4)
Ever since the incumbent Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike became a Member of Parliament in 1992, rumors have been circulating that Koike embellished her academic credentials.
Koike claims to have graduated from Cairo University but if an Arabic speaker listens to her Arabic, her published academic credentials as a Cairo University graduate seems more than dubious.
There are strong evidence about her fake academic credentials such as testimony by the flatmate supported by documentary evidence, Koike's self-contradictory statement in her book to have graduated in four years despite failing her first year, her rudimentary Arabic, her lie about the graduation thesis and her stubbornness in refusing to submit her graduation documents to the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly.
Feeling a sense of duty as someone who learnt Arabic and graduated from an Egyptian university (MA, Middle East Studies from the American University in Cairo), I decided to investigate the allegations. After two years of investigation, I could not find any evidence, nor even the slightest hint that Koike graduated from Cairo University.
In this six-part article, I present the results of my investigation in detail.Here is the fourth part of it;
Was Koike eligible to transfer?
Koike claims in her books and other places that she entered Cairo University as a first year student (freshman) in October 1972.
However, in the ""Fake CV"" the flatmate says, ""Koike entered Cairo University in October 1973 as a second year student.
Koike happily told me ‘My father asked Dr. Hatem, then Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and Information, to swap my few months at Kwansei Gakuin University, a private university in Hyogo prefecture, and a few months at the language course at the American University in Cairo for the first year at Cairo University. ‘
‘Dr. Hatem accepted the request. In addition, my tuition and admission fees have been waived’ .
This is apparently written in the flatmate’s letter to her mother in Japan dated 19 November 1972. According to the ""Fake CV"" most of her letters were dated and postmarked. If so, they will be admissible to court."
In the ""Fake CV"" another Japanese woman who was attending another university in Egypt at the time says she was surprised that Koike had transferred in the second year at Cairo University. Another Japanese graduate of Cairo University whom I interviewed also remembered that Koike had transferred to the second year."
However, strict rules are in place to transfer to Egypt's state universities, including Cairo University. In order to transfer, a student must have earned credits at another university with the same or similar content and number of hours as the Egyptian state university’s curriculum and must have earned a certain number of grades. This was confirmed to me by the Central Transfers Office of Cairo University.
In the case of the 2016-17 academic year, for example, students are required to have at least imtiyaaz (excellent) grade from other university if the student wishes to transfer to the Faculty of Engineering or Medicine and at least jaiid jiddan (very good) grade in the case of faculties of practical study and at least jaiid (good) grade for those of theoretical study.
The aforementioned journalist Dalia Shibel told me that ""In Egypt state universities and private universities are two completely different systems. Even if you study at the American University in Cairo for 10 years obtaining necessary credits, you have to start as a first year student in Cairo University. This is the law of our country"". Therefore it is totally impossible that a person like Koike who has not finished a year at another university (and has not earned any credits) would be allowed to transfer."
Koike only attended Kwansei Gakuin University for several months at most. CASA at the American University in Cairo where she learnt Arabic is just a language school and does not offer any credits or degrees. If, as some Japanese people point out, Koike actually transferred to the second year at Cairo University in 1973, that is nothing but a fraudulent transfer. That means she was not eligible for graduation from the beginning.
No answer to the question about Koike’s admittance
In 2019, 51 people were prosecuted in the United States for paying bribes under the guise of charity to an organization that allows celebrities and others to increase their children's SAT (college aptitude test) scores and fraudulently admit them to prestigious universities.
One of them, actress Felicity Huffman, who starred in the TV drama Desperate Housewives, was sentenced to 14 days in prison and was incarcerated last October in a women's prison in California. Huffman's daughter Sophia has not enrolled in college and is reported to be retaking the SAT.
Stanford University expelled a Chinese student, whose parents paid $6.5 million to the organization for misusing a sports endorsement slot to enroll in the program, citing irregularities in submissions.
As Koike does not appear to have fulfilled the requirements for transferring to a state university in Egypt, I sent a letter to Koike, to ask whether she was admitted in 1972 or 1973 but received no response (the full text of my questions to and response from Koike will appear later in this report).
Cairo University is one of the prominent universities in the Arab world and there are many excellent Egyptian students in the Faculties of Medicine, Engineering, and Economics and Political Science. However, its global standing is not very high.
In the 2020 edition of the QS World University Rankings published by Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd. in the United Kingdom, Cairo University ranks 521-530 in the world and second in Egypt, on par with Kumamoto University and Nagasaki University in Japan. The best university in Egypt is the American University in Cairo (private and American-accredit university) which ranks 395th in the world (tied with Kobe University in Japan). Third place in Egypt are Ain Shams University, Alexandria University, and Assiut University (all state universities) which rank 801-1000th in the world.
Koike’s Connections with Dr. Abdel-Kader Hatem
The name of an Egyptian politician who assisted Koike's possible ""fraudulent transfer"" appears in the ""Fake CV"". The flatmate testifies that Koike transferred to the second grade at Cairo University in 1973 through the connections of Dr. Abdel- Kader Hatem, a prominent Egyptian politician."
Hatem was born in Alexandria in 1917. A graduate of the Military Academy and Cairo University. He participated in the Egyptian revolution in 1952 (a coup to overthrow the monarchy which was followed by the foundation of the republic the following year) as a young member of the Free Officers Movement led by then Lieutenant Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser.
He became a member of the National Assembly in 1957, Deputy Minister in the Presidential Office, Minister of State for Radio and Television in 1959, Minister of Culture and Minister of National Guidance and Tourism in 1962, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and Information in 1971, then longtime General Supervisor of the Specialized National Councils and President of the Egyptian-Japanese Friendship Association. He died in 2015 at the age of 97.
In February 1974, Hatem, who was then the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Culture and Information visited Japan as an official guest and met Japan’s Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka, Deputy Prime Minister Takeo Miki and visited the Imperial Palace to meet the Emperor. In 1982 he was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, First Class by the Japanese government.
On the occasion of Hatem's visit to Japan in 1974 the Japanese Ambassador to Egypt Tsutomu Wada wrote in an official telegram dated 12 February 1974 to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan ""As a result of recent developments in Egyptian politics the position of Deputy Prime Minister Hatem (who had been acting as a substitute for the Prime Minister) has been further strengthened as I have often reported. It is remarkable for an Egyptian Deputy Prime Minister to visit Japan accompanied by 6 media reporters and that clearly shows Dr. Hatem’s power. It also shows how important he thinks this visit is."""
The Arabic-language biography of Hatem “The Diary of Abdel-Kader Hatem - Head of the October War Government"" published in Cairo in 2016 (written by an Egyptian journalist Ibrahim Abdel Aziz) states that Hatem had been on good terms with Yasuhiro Nakasone, former Prime Minister of Japan, since 1954 and that Nakasone introduced Yuriko Koike to him, a student at that time, as the daughter of his friend. Hatem took care of Koike. Koike called Hatem a god-father, and he gave Koike an allowance of 14 Egyptian pounds a month (Koike wrote on page 250 of “Furisode Climbing the Pyramid"" that she received a scholarship of 12 pounds a month from the Egyptian government)."
Abdel-Kader Hatem
Abdel-Kader Hatem with Yasuhiro Nakasone
On the other hand Koike's book, ""Onna no Jinmyaku-Zukuri (How I made personal connections as a woman)"" published in 1985 states that her father (Yujiro Koike) had known Nakasone for a long time. She herself first met Nakasone when she was an elementary school student, every winter Nakasone sent her family a bunch of leeks produced in Gunma prefecture, Nakasone’s electoral district, and she ate them with his* brother." She ate them with HER brother.,,

On 6 October 1973, the October War (Yom Kippur War) broke out in Egypt. Egyptian and Syrian forces launched an attack on Israeli forces deployed in the Suez Canal and Golan Heights in an attempt to recapture territory occupied by Israel in the Six Day War (June War) in 1967.
In support of Egypt and Syria, the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC), raised oil prices by 1.4 times and caused the First Oil Crisis. Japan was considered one of the ""unfriendly"" countries by OAPEC and suffered an economic crisis as a result of measures to cut oil supplies. The Japanese government sent Deputy Prime Minister Takeo Miki and former Foreign Minister Zentaro Kosaka and others to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Algeria to ask those countries to change Japan to a ""friendly country"" category (the so-called ""oil begging diplomacy"")."

What does the University of California’s decision to temporarily become test optional really mean to international students?
The following quote is taken from an article about the recent decision for one of the “critical, short-term measures:”
“Suspending the standardized test requirement for students applying for fall 2021 freshman admission.”
I’m sure many 11th graders would see this news and be very excited! Yeah! No SAT!!!!
However, is this what it really means?
The short answer is “no.”
Never forget that academics are the main purpose of studying at a university. That means that the most important factor in being admitted is academic achievement. In US schools, a student’s GPA holds the most weight in the admissions process, followed by their SAT scores. For international students, however, individual high schools are less known to the university admissions officers, so the GPA scores are less well understood than they are in the US. This is because admissions officers are quite familiar with the local high schools in their designated areas, so they are able to account for grade inflation and course load rigor. That is much more difficult for them to do in international schools, so admissions officers attach less weight to international GPAs than they do to US GPAs, which means that the SAT scores are even more important for international students.
Now that UC schools will be test optional for this year’s admissions, the admissions officers’ jobs have become even more difficult. You need to look at the admissions process from the admissions officers’ point of view: if they don’t have SAT scores, they have one fewer way to determine a student’s merits.
For those rare students with astonishingly good extracurriculars and leadership roles, lacking a SAT score will not be a problem. Such students will still be able to demonstrate their incredible talents to the admissions officers. For students without such outstanding achievements, though, admissions officers rely on SAT scores to help them understand students’ academic performance.
For students to be competitive, they need to make the admissions officers’ jobs as easy as possible, which means giving them more tools to judge your admission with.
Make sure you take the SAT as soon as it becomes available, and, just as important, make sure you continue to practice while you wait for the next test date. Without the May administration, there is one fewer chance to get the score you need.
For students in grade 10, remember that the coronavirus will pass, and testing will be back to normal next year.
Feel free to leave comments and ask me any questions.

Allen Iverson had every reason to feel good after his performance kept Philadelphia close to the division lead.
Surely the mood changed when the Sixers All-Star found out he was injured.
Iverson outperformed Kobe Bryant, scoring 36 points and leading a decisive third-quarter run in the 76ers' 108-91 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.
Iverson helped pull the Sixers (31-33) to four games of Boston for first place in the Atlantic Division.
"It made me feel good," Iverson said. "Any win makes me feel good."
Iverson, though, chipped a bone in his left thumb sometime in the second half and will be fitted for a cast. He is day-to-day. The Sixers said Iverson will be re-evaluated Friday when they play again at Cleveland.
Iverson left the arena before the injury was announced.
The Sixers certainly need the league's leading scorer if they're going to make any kind of run at the Celtics.
"We would like to have that (winning) streak right now," said Iverson, before he knew the X-ray results.
Andre Iguodala scored 15 points for the Sixers, adding a few more spectacular dunks, including an alley-oop where he came crashing down on Jumaine Jones. Kyle Korver had 14.
Bryant -- who came in trailing Iverson by nearly two points in the league scoring race -- led the Lakers with 20 points, but had little help. The Lakers (32-31) fell out of the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference.
Bryant made five of nine shots in the first quarter, but went 1-for-6 the rest of the game.
"We've got to get more people involved," Bryant said. "They were doubling me and the shots weren't falling."
Iguodala had plenty to do with that. The Sixers rookie kept a hand in Bryant's face most of the game and aggressively contested his shots. Iguodala said he watched plenty of tape to prepare for one of his toughest assignments.
"I knew if I kept my hands up and kept nagging him a little bit that I could make him take a tougher shot," Iguodala said.
Bryant scored 16 points in the first quarter and Iverson had 14 as the two seemed poised for a one-on-one showdown between All-Stars. But Bryant slowed down, thanks largely to the sticky defense by Iguodala, while Iverson kept driving and crashing.
Iverson scored 14 points during a 26-9 run in the third quarter by doing what he does best -- drive the lane, look for the layup and get to the line. When he couldn't do that, Iverson would dribble around the perimeter until he found an open look.
He took six of Philadelphia's 16 shots in the third (making three) and went 7-for-7 from the line. Overall, Iverson went 14-for-15 from the line and 10-for-22 from the floor.
On one fallaway layup from the right side, Iverson was fouled by Chucky Atkins. Atkins bitterly complained and was hit with two quick technicals and ejected from the game.
Korver sank the two free throws for a 66-50 lead. Rodney Rogers hit a 3-pointer near the end of the third, giving Philadelphia a 28-point lead.
Chris Webber again was a non-factor for the Sixers. He scored Philly's first two baskets of the game, sat out 5 minutes of the second quarter and missed his last six shots for five points.
Webber remained baffled as to why he has looked little like the five-time All-Star he was in Sacramento. Of course, watching Iverson take a bulk of the shots and not having coach Jim O'Brien call plays for Webber might have something do with his struggles.
"I don't want to put my finger on it," Webber said. "It's not because it's late in the season. I didn't become this player in one day."
Game notes
Bryant, who went to nearby Lower Merion High School, needed about 30 tickets. Among those invited were players on this year's Merion team and his former coach, Gregg Downer. Lower Merion plays in the Class AAAA state semifinals Wednesday night. Bryant said he loved playing in Philadelphia, even though he's always booed. "If I played here, they'd love it with the Philly attitude I have," he said. "But I enjoy coming here because of that." ... The Sixers are 17-10 when Iverson scores 30 or more points

Shaquille O'Neal, the man with four rings, 28,596 career points and scores of nicknames, has finally decided to call it quits, ending one of the most colorful careers in NBA history that will surely culminate with a Hall of Fame induction.
O'Neal, 39, officially announced his retirement Wednesday using the new social media tool Tout, a real-time video messaging service.
"Once a businesman, always a businessman," O'Neal said, smiling. "I am the emperor of the social media network. Why text when you can Tout?"
O'Neal signed a two-year contract with the Boston Celtics last summer but a persistent Achilles injury will prevent him from fulfilling the terms of the deal. O'Neal first injured his right Achilles on Christmas Day and was able to play only in two of the final 35 games of the regular season.
On April 3 against Detroit, O'Neal returned to the court after a two-month absence and scored six points in a spirited 5 minutes and 29 seconds before coming up lame and limping off the floor. Although his injury was listed as a strained calf, O'Neal said it was the Achilles flaring up again.
"I felt like someone had shot me in the back of my leg," he said.
O'Neal did not play again in the regular season. He sat out the New York Knicks playoff series then tried to return in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against his old team, the Miami Heat. O'Neal logged 8 1/2 minutes in the 97-81 victory but woke up in considerable pain the next morning. His final game was two days later, when he toiled for three minutes of Game 4 before Celtics coach Doc Rivers pulled him for good.
In the final weeks of the the playoffs, O'Neal, over the objections of team physician Brian McKeon, had "more than five" cortisone shots in his Achilles in an attempt to play against the Heat.
"Doc (McKeon) kept telling me, 'No, no,' but I wanted to play so badly," O'Neal said. "My feeling was, 'If it ruptures, it ruptures.' The Celtics were so good to me I wanted to do everything I could to get back on the court for them."
Throughout his time on the sideline, Shaq said, he continued to do rehab as well as work on the treadmill and the exercise bike. He swam each evening at the Thoreau Club in Concord and shot a number of late-night free throws in at the Lincoln-Sudbury High School gymnasium across the street from his rented Sudbury home. He lost 35 pounds and was "feeling great everywhere except for that one little spot behind my heel."
Shaq said McKeon recommended surgery that would "clean up" the area around the Achilles, but O'Neal revealed the recovery time would be close to nine months.
"I really, really thought about coming back," he said, "but this Achilles is very damaged and if I had it done the recovery would be so long we'd have same outcome as this last year -- everyone sitting around and waiting for me.
"I didn't want to let people down two years in a row. I didn't want to hold Boston hostage again.
"I'm letting everybody know now so Danny (Ainge) and the organization can try to get younger talent. I would love to come back, but they say once the Achilles is damaged it's never the same. I don't want to take that chance."
O'Neal said his final months in Boston included some of the darkest days of his career because "I just hated to let the city of Boston down. I really grew to love the place. Everyone was so welcoming to me and treated me so great. They believed in me and they took care of me, especially the great people of Sudbury. I love that town."
O'Neal also had effusive praise for Rivers, whom, he said, was "one of the best I ever played for."
"I thought Doc was fabulous," O'Neal said. "He stressed 'team' all the time, never wavered on that. He kept everyone together. He's an amazing coach. I want to congratulate him on his five years (extension).
"He deserves it. He loves the organization, loves the players, and we all love him back."
O'Neal is acutely aware the Celtics posted a record of 21-4 when he was able to play 20 or more minutes this season. The chemistry he shared with the Big Three (Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen) and Rajon Rondo, he said, will be an enduring memory, leaving him to wonder what would have happened had he stayed healthy.
"We were supposed to win this year but 'supposed' doesn't count," he said. "The path was there for us. All the so-called super powers were gone -- LA, San Antonio. I really feel if I was on the court we would have done it, but I don't believe in 'ifs.' "
O'Neal said he wasn't prepared yet to reminisce about his long and prolific career, which produced three championships with the Lakers and one with the Heat. "Let's save that for the press conference on Friday," said O'Neal, who will hold that media event at his Isleworth home.

After being booed almost the entire night, Matt Geiger had a final minute that put Philadelphia back on his side.
Geiger kept the ball in the Sixers' hands for most of the final minute by tipping two missed shots to teammates and grabbing an offensive rebound.
The latter play brought a half-hug, half-back slap from Allen Iverson that was an emotional high for the 76ers in a 93-91 victory Wednesday night over then Toronto Raptors.
"You have to be deaf not to, so yeah, I heard them," Geiger said of the boos. "That's just Philly. When I play bad, they boo."
Geiger missed 10 of 14 shots, and kept losing rebounds to the Raptors.
When rookie Todd MacCullough replaced him, the crowd cheered.
"The crowd getting on Matt Geiger, and then at the end of the game he ended up being one of the heroes," said Iverson, who scored 37 points. "It's tough.
"For this guy to help us get to the playoffs last year and come in here off having surgery and push himself to get back a little earlier and get booed because he's not capable of doing the things that he's always been capable of, it's kind of rough."
The Raptors, who blew a 17-point lead by playing a selfish second half, had a chance to tie it or win it, but Vince Carter missed a 21-foot jumper from the corner at the buzzer.
The Sixers improved to 6-2 when Iverson scores 30 or more points. He also had seven rebounds and seven assists while shooting 13-for-34, two shy of his career-high for attempts.
Carter scored 19, Tracy McGrady 18, Kevin Willis 17 and Dee Brown 12 for Toronto, which got a career-high 18 rebounds from Antonio Davis yet still had its two-game road winning streak halted.
Philadelphia outscored Toronto 27-14 in the third quarter and 25-22 in the fourth.
"I told them at halftime let's not worry about them making a run, let's put them away," Raptors coach Butch Carter said. "I think they lost their confidence."
Geiger's last rebound led to Iverson making one of two foul shots to make it 90-87 with 12.2 seconds left. Davis scored on a layup with 7.9 left, and Iverson restored the three-point lead by making a pair from the line with 7.2 left.
That seemingly gave Toronto one last chance to tie, but the Raptors instead went inside to Davis for a layup, making it 92-91 with 1.7 seconds left. Eric Snow then made one of two free throws with 0.9 left, and Carter couldn't capitalize and tie it at the buzzer.
The Raptors grabbed a team-record 36 rebounds in the first half against a Sixers team that was missing Tyrone Hill, who sat out with the flu, and Theo Ratliff, who missed his 11th straight game with a sore left ankle despite being cleared to play by the team doctor.
Ratliff said he'll play Friday against Chicago.
With Carter on the bench for the entire second quarter, the Raptors pulled ahead with a 17-2 run including 13 unanswered points. Most of the damage was done by the big men, Davis and Willis.
After trailing 51-34 late in the second quarter, Philadelphia got back into it in the third with runs of 12-1 and 11-4 to trail by just one point entering the fourth.
Iverson was 8-for-24 before hitting four of his last five shots of the third quarter.
Iverson gave the 76ers the lead for good on three foul shots that made it 83-81 with 3:56 left. McGrady could have tied it but missed two free throws, and Iverson shook off Alvin Williams with two crossover, between-the-legs dribbles before hitting jumper that gave Philadelphia a four-point lead heading into the final three minutes.
Notes: The shortage of big men forced the Sixers to start a front line of Geiger, Billy Owens and George Lynch. The Sixers were outrebounded 56-48. ... McGrady, one night after scoring 21 against Indiana in his first start of the season, had nine rebounds, six assists and six turnovers to go with his 18 points. ... Toronto guard Doug Christie sat out with a sore ankle. ... Philly snapped a two-game losing streak. ... Toronto lost for just the second time in 14 games when leading at the half.
