If you are currently interviewing or looking to add talent to your team, try looking past expertise and take these two qualities into account - people who show initiative and those that have been through adversity, why:
1/ Initiative is contagious.
2/ People with initiative are willing to learn new things, they’ll take on new responsibilities and master their role, all the while spreading their enthusiasm and willingness within their team. Especially in the early-stage startup environment, teams need willingness and hustle to flourish. Expertise is much harder to diffuse.
3 / To identify their initiative, ask candidates about what they were interested in and to what degree did they pursue these interests? This could be anything from painting to knitting, the more obsessed someone is with something, the more they are motivated to learn.
4/ Overcoming adversity brings maturity.
5/ People who have overcome adversity have courage, can stomach ambiguity, and have a track record of beating the odds. These are all critical qualities for early-stage founding team members. These qualities are much more important than how long they held X position for Y period of time at Z company.
6/ What are the hardest problems they had to overcome? How did they prevail and how did these events define them as a person? These questions not only shed light on their origin story but also showcases their value and personality on a much more tangible and human level.
7/ At the end of the day, companies are about people and people are more than just their degrees and resumes. To improve the qualities of your future hires, hire people who take initiative and have overcome adversity.

This marks as my 5th out of my 6 part series on becoming a better founder. I have learnt so much writing out these ideas and thoughts that's been in my head for months! I hope they have brought some value to you. Tune back to my last piece on Wednesday the 27th.

Ask Boldly Like A Persistent Child
“You lust, and don’t have. You murder and covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war. You don’t have, because you don’t ask. You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures.” (James 4:2-3 WEB)
A child’s persistence is amazing. I know it firsthand. When my three year old daughter Maeleth asks me for something, she keeps asking and doesn’t give up until she gets an answer.
“Daddy, I want that. Can I have that please?”
She asks and waits for an answer. The answer may be yes, no or later, but she expects an answer.
All of us have desires for good things but some of us are afraid to ask God due to certain wrong beliefs.
God’s word says that you don’t have because you don’t ask God in prayer.
“What if I ask too much? I’m afraid that God will think I’m so greedy and selfish.”
“I don’t deserve it. My sins are too great. All I ask is for mercy to be saved.”
Dear brethren, as an earthly father I would give anything that my daughter wants as long as it’s within my means and if the thing she asks for is good/safe for her. I must also give it at the right time for her own good.
If imperfect fathers like me can have that kind of generosity and thoughtful consideration towards their children, what more our perfect Abba Father whose essence is Love?
““Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened. Or who is there among you, who, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, who will give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:7-11 WEB)
He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and His presence fills Heaven and earth which He owns. Nothing is too hard for Him to fulfill.
“...your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him.” (Matthew 6:8 WEB)
Before you even speak your prayer, God already knows what’s in your mind and heart.
Still, He wants you to ask Him so that He will grant you your heart’s desires.
He won’t force something you if you don’t ask or give consent—He honors your free will.
If your concern is that your sins disqualify you from receiving anything good from God, then look to the cross.
At the cross, Jesus was beaten, pierced and smitten by God’s fiery wrath for the sins of the world, so that all your sins have been completely punished in Jesus’ body.
Your sins are no longer standing in the way between you and God.
The wages of sin is death and those wages have already been righteously paid in full.
When God looks at your Book of Remembrance in Heaven, it’s spotlessly clean because all your sins were transferred to Jesus’ account—and Jesus paid for those sins by His shed blood and His death.
Your records show that you’re perfectly righteous, just like Jesus!
So ask boldly and persistently for all your needs and for the good things you desire, like a child who believes that God is most delighted to hear your voice and that He loves to answer your prayers.
That’s the kind of pure faith that pleases God.
You qualify to receive God’s blessings not because your behavior is good, but because you’re righteous in Christ thanks to Jesus’ finished work at the cross!
God will surely give you the good things you ask for in His own way and at the perfect time—have faith in Him. Till then, rest assured that your prayers are in the process of being fulfilled!

【 Practical approach to product/market Fit 】
For most founders, achieving product/market fit is the number one goal from day one. This article by Rauhl Vohra, CEO of Superhuman shed some light on how they discovered their product’s market, and how they grew by improving their product to satisfy(fit) that market. Few things to add to what Rauhl shared in the article:
- To find PMF you need to first Identify your target customer
You can only move towards PMF once you know who your target customer(market) is, the more specific the better. Before conducting their survey, Superhuman didn’t have a target customer in mind, but as indicated by their survey results, Superhuman narrowed their target customer to executives and founders, as they are the ones who find the most value from using Superhuman. Another approach to identify these users is by looking at your power/heavy users.
- Once you identify your true fans, focus on these customers
Not all customers are equal. These true fans represent your product’s market, if you want to get to PMF, you need to focus your execution on them rather than shiny new opportunities. Paul Graham sums it up really well with “build something a small number of people want a large amount”
- Talk to and listen to your true fans
Not all feedbacks are equal either. You need to focus on feedback given by your true fans. You need to understand what they truly want, what’s the situation they are in and what’s the problem they are trying to solve with your product. Try asking open ended questions and not leading questions, ie. “How do you feel about XXX feature?” not “Do you love XXX feature?”
Focus on and understand your true fans is the most straightforward way to get to product market fit. Once you satisfy that market you’ll need to reorient your product, because as you grow you’ll attract new types of users. None of this is a one-time-thing, it should be a continual practice to gauge the needs of your customers as your service improves.

-------------------------------------
My intention was to comfort myself when I wrote the first line "Beautiful soul, you're much better than who you think you are..." when I was going through emotional turmoil back in 2019. As I went on, I realised I wasn't looking for comfort, I was looking for an outlet. It became a conversation rather than a comfort. Somehow the negativity in this song touched me more than anything. I believe we are have unique personalities, but our experiences can be similar. To all the people who are struggling emotionally, I have something to say: shed light on your beautiful emotions, revive and bounce back to life.
在2019年某些原因令我情緒困擾,想寫一首歌安慰自己。第一句寫的就是 “Beautiful soul, you're much better than who you think you are..."。之後我發現其實我並不是想找安慰,而是需要發洩。這首歌變成了一段內心掙扎的對話,而這首歌出奇地帶給我的不是負能量,而是感動。我想跟所有被情緒困擾的人說:包容自己的情緒,重新繼續走下去吧。
Special thanks to Hope of the City for providing a space for us to shoot! On behalf of the crew and myself, I have donated to Hope COVID-19 Relief fund in Hope of the City Foundation Limited to help those in need in this difficult time in history.

Lyrics:
Beautiful soul
You’re much better
Than who you think you are
When you try to surrender
There’s no one like you
Exactly like you
You’re perfect just the way you are
It’s the truth
Easy for you to say
But I can’t tell myself these things
Yea, I know you tried to save me
Tried to save me and find a cure
For me
But it’s not easy
And I want to let you know
I hate my feelings
I hate that I can feel
But it’s not easy
To play my part
But I know I have a heart
Beautiful soul
Do you remember
The shit that came around
You never surrendered
Don’t tell me you don’t love yourself
No excuse for who you are
A mind
A heart
To love
Easy for you to say
But I can’t tell myself these things
Yea, I know you tried to save me
Tried to save me and find a cure
For me
But it’s not easy
And I want to let you know
I hate my feelings
I hate that I can feel
But it’s not easy
To play my part
But I know I have a heart
Oh, revive
Oh, survive
Oh, revive
Oh, survive
Do you know how hard I’ve tried
How hard I’ve tried to hold them in
That’s not me
That’s not me
So I want to let you see it through my eyes
I hate that I can’t lie
But it’s not easy
To play my part
I know I have a heart
Oh, revive
Oh, survive
Oh, revive
Oh, revive
Oh, survive
Oh, revive
Oh, revive
Oh, survive
Oh, revive

Way Back Into Love Cover by 安俊豪(Simon) & 李美琪(Monnie)
原唱: Hugh Grant & Haley Bennett
作詞:Adam Schlesinger 作曲:Adam Schlesinger
I've been living with a shadow overhead
I've been sleeping with a cloud above my bed
I've been lonely for so long
Trapped in the past, I just can't seem to move on
I've been hiding all my hopes and dreams away
Just in case I ever need them again someday
I've been setting aside time
To clear a little space in the corners of my mind
All I wanna do is find a way back into love
I can't make it through without a way back into love
Oh hoooow
I've been watching but the stars refuse to shine
I've been searching but I just don't see the signs
I know that it's out there
There's got to be something for my soul somewhere
I've been looking for someone to shed some light
Not somebody just to get me through the night
I could use some direction
And I'm open to your suggestions
All I wanna do is find a way back into love
I can't make it through without a way back into love
And if I open my heart again
I guess I'm hoping you'll be there for me in the end
oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
There are moments when I don't know if it's real
Or if anybody feels the way I feel
I need inspiration
Not just another negotiation
All I want to do is find a way back into love
I can't make it through without a way back into love
And if I open my heart to you
I'm hoping you'll show me what to do
And if you help me to start again
You know that i'll be there for you in the end
