1. According to @StandNewsHK, two #Chinese scholars (at least of them is #CCP member) are nominated as the vice presidents of #HKU, months after the university sacked the co-founder of #UmbrellaMovement #BennyTai.
2. As described on #Tsinghua’s university website, one of the nominees, #ShenZuojun, was the “member of the Party committee of the faculty”. While Shen has reportedly taken part in #China’s Thousand Talents Plan, he will take charge of #HKU’s research affairs.
3. It casts more concerns on the city’s academic freedoms and #freespeech when #CCP members are now nominated to head #Hongkong’s university directly, let alone the chilling effects of the sweeping #NationalSecurityLaw.
4. The nomination also sends a worrying sign as #HK scholars and students will gradually face more political pressure when studying and researching in #Hongkong, especially for studies that are regarded as sensitive or too critical on the situation in #Hongkong and #China.
