Suddenly feel like teaching Korean🧐 so here’s the word of the day: 잘생긴척 (chal-saeng-kin-chok), which means “pretending to be handsome”. The dude above👆🏻is a perfect representation of this word🤗
Let’s break it down👨🏻🎓 잘생겼다 (chal-saeng-kyeot-da) means “to be born handsome”, and xxx척 (-chok) means “to pretend/to look as if”. When the adjective/verb in front is put together with the latter, the combination means “pretending to be handsome”🤓
Here’s another example: your sister found out that someone had secretly devoured her bag of limited edition oreos and is furious!😱 Therefore, you need to put on a 모르는척 (moh-reu-neun-chok) expression. You already know what the -척 means, and 모르다 (moh-reu-da) means “don’t know”. In these situations, of course it’s best to pretend that you know nothing!😬 @ West Kowloon Cultural District 西九文化區

🇺🇸 Idioms 美國生活用語:老鼠 rat╱mouse 🐁
說到美國老鼠,你會想到可愛的米老鼠,還是《料理鼠王》裡頭的老鼠?趁鼠年第一天,來介紹老美眼中的老鼠!
💪順便搞懂 rat 跟 mouse 的不同之處吧!
1⃣ rat
2⃣ rat out/on
3⃣ smell a rat
4⃣ the rat race
5⃣ quiet at a mouse
6⃣ poor as a church mouse
--
As we enter the Year of the Rat, it’s a good time to think about rodents and their cultural significance. The first animal in the Chinese Zodiac, rats are associated with intelligence, diligence and ambition. And people born in the Year of the Rat can look forward to being wealthy and successful.
鼠年即將到來,正好來介紹一下鼠類跟其文化意涵。身為十二生肖排名第一,老鼠通常會讓我們想到聰明、勤勞且有野心。鼠年出生的人可望成功富有。
In America, however, rats don’t have such a positive image. They are seen as dirty pests that steal food and spread disease. It’s therefore no accident the rat-related idioms are all negative. 1⃣ First, the term “rat” itself. In colloquial American English, a rat is a deceptive, disloyal person or an informant. Ex: Don’t trust Tommy—he’s a rat!
不過在美國,老鼠可就沒有這麼正面的形象。牠們被視為髒東西,愛偷食物並且散播疾病,所以沒有意外地,跟老鼠有關的美國用語都是負面的。首先來看看 rat 這個字,在美式口語英文中,講某人是 rat,就是說他是「騙子、不忠實」,或是「告密者」。如:Don’t trust Tommy—he’s a rat!(別相信湯米,他是個騙子!)
2⃣ “Rat” can also be used in the verb phrase “rat out/on,” which means “to inform on sb.” Ex: The thief ratted out his accomplices to avoid jail time. 3⃣Another phrase is “smell a rat,” which means “to suspect an instance of wrongdoing, deception or betrayal.” Ex: The witness smelled a rat when he saw the suspect leaving the scene of the crime. 4⃣Finally, “the rat race” describes the intense competition and long hours of the urban work environment. Ex: Eric dreamed of leaving the rat race and buying a small farm.
因此 rat 也可延伸作為動詞:rat out/on,指「出賣某人」,如:The thief ratted out his accomplices to avoid jail time.(那個小偷出賣他的同夥逃避坐牢。)另一個片語則是 smell a rat,指「發覺有可疑之處」,如:The witness smelled a rat when he saw the suspect leaving the scene of the crime.(目擊者看到嫌犯離開案發現場時覺得行為可疑。)最後是 the rat race,用來形容職場競爭激烈且工時長的現象。如:Eric dreamed of leaving the rat race and buying a small farm.(艾瑞克夢想著離開這競爭激烈的工作環境,去鄉下種田。)
While the Chinese “shu” is usually translated as “rat,” it can also refer to mice. And mice have a slightly better reputation in English than rats. Mice are small, quiet and shy, so 5⃣ “quiet at a mouse” refers to someone who is shy and timid. Ex: The new student in our class is quiet as a mouse. 6⃣And if someone is “poor as a church mouse,” they’re really poor. This is because churches usually don’t usually store food, so mice who lived in them would have nothing to eat. Ex: My parents were poor as a church mouse when I was born.
雖然中文字「鼠」常常翻作 rat「大老鼠」,不過也可以指 mouse(複數形 mice)「小老鼠」。在英文中,小老鼠的形象比大老鼠稍微好些。小老鼠體型較小,安靜又害羞,所以 quiet as a mouse 可以用來形容某人「害羞膽怯的」,如:The new student in our class is quiet as a mouse.(我們班新來的學生很害羞。)要是說某人 poor as a church mouse,就是說他們「非常窮」。由來是因為教堂通常不會儲藏食物,所以住在教堂裡的老鼠根本沒東西可吃。如:My parents were poor as a church mouse when I was born.(我父母在我出生時候非常窮。)
【✍重點單字】
1. rodent「嚙齒類動物」
2. Chinese Zodiac「十二生肖」:zodiac指西洋占星的十二星座。
3. diligence「勤奮」:當名詞,形容詞 diligent。
4. it’s no accident that…「沒有意外,……」
5. colloquial「口語的」:相對於書寫文字而言,較不正式的說法。
6. deceptive「愛騙人、說謊的」:當形容詞,名詞 deception。
7. informant「告密者」
8. urban「都市的」:相反詞為 rural「鄉下的」。
9. reputation「名聲」

Food Idioms 美國生活用語:Chicken 雞🐣
Chicken is an even better source of protein than eggs, and of course there’s a substantial number of chicken-related idioms. 吃膩蛋了嗎?來點下蛋的動物如何?🐥雞肉比起蛋,是更優質的蛋白質來源,也有許多生活用語。
1⃣chicken out
2⃣play chicken
3⃣chicken feed
4⃣chicken scratch
5⃣spring chicken
6⃣ run around like a chicken with its head cut off
--
Everyone knows that chickens are easily frightened, 1⃣ so “chicken” can also mean “coward” or “cowardly.” Ex: Don’t be such a chicken! And for a verb phrase, just add an “out.” Ex: He wanted to ask her out, but chickened out at the last minute. 2⃣ What happens when people “play chicken”? It means they play a dangerous game to see who gives in first. Ex: You should never play chicken with another car.
大家都知道,雞很容易受到驚嚇,所以chicken一字也可以指「懦夫」,或是當形容詞,指「膽小懦弱的」。如:Don’t be such a chicken!(別這麼膽小!)如果要用來表示動詞,後面加上out即可,如:He wanted to ask her out, but chickened out at the last minute.(他本來想約她出去,在最後卻退縮了。)當人們play chicken時會發生什麼事呢?這是在說「比試膽量」,就是玩危險的比賽,來看哪個人先讓步。如:You should never play chicken with another car.(你不該跟其他駕駛搶路爭道。)
If you’ve ever seen chickens pecking around for small bits of food, you can understand why3⃣ “chicken feed” means a small amount of money (wages or profits). Ex: I’m tired of working long hours for chicken feed. And if you’ve seen chickens scratching the ground, you can understand why 4⃣ “chicken scratch” means illegible handwriting. Ex: Ben left me a note, but I can’t understand his chicken scratch.
如果你看過雞在四周啄食米粒的樣子,你大概就會明白chicken feed為什麼有「微薄的一筆錢(薪水或利潤)」。如:I’m tired of working long hours for chicken feed.(我已經厭倦這份工時長收入又微薄的工作了。)又如果你也看過雞用爪子抓地面的樣子,也大概能理解,為何chicken scratch可以形容「字跡潦草」,如:Ben left me a note, but I can’t understand his chicken scratch.(班留紙條給我,但是我看不懂他的鬼畫符。)
Chickens are usually born in the spring, 5⃣ so a “spring chicken” refers to someone who’s still young. Ex: Your boyfriend is a little old, but you’re no spring chicken either. But even old chickens don’t go out without a fight. Even when they get their heads cut off, they often keep running around for a few seconds. For this reason, 6⃣ “run around like a chicken with its head cut off” is used to describe someone who is behaving in a frantic manner, usually because they have too much to do. Ex: Why is Patricia running around like a chicken with its head cut off?
雞通常出生於春天,所以spring chicken常用來指「年輕人,毛頭小子或姑娘」,如:Your boyfriend is a little old, but you’re no spring chicken either.(你男友是有點年紀,但你也不是毛頭小孩啊。)不過即使是老雞,也鬥志堅強。當雞隻頭被切下來,他們的身體還是能跑個幾秒鐘。因為這樣,所以run around like a chicken with its head cut off可以用來形容「如無頭蒼蠅忙碌」。如:Why is Patricia running around like a chicken with its head cut off?(為什麼派翠西亞要像個無頭蒼蠅一樣跑來跑去?)
【✍重點單字】
1. give in「讓步」
2. illegible「

4. Soloist獨奏者
5. 專家

born動詞 在 Re: [文法] born 和where - 精華區Eng-Class - 批踢踢實業坊 的推薦與評價
※ 引述《LPeach (go for it)》之銘言:
: 請問一下 I was born in Taiwan. 這裡的born是動詞還是形容詞啊?
: 如果是動詞的話 為什麼要用bear的過去分詞呢? 不是用完成式時才會用到過去分詞嗎?
這裡的 born 是 過去分詞
因為 是 被生下來的 所以用被動式
: 另外 Taipei is a city which is very crowded. 這裡的which可以用where來代替嗎
: 不行的話 是為什麼呢?
用 where 是不行的
這個句子中 先行詞是 city,
所以用 which 來代替 是正確的
但 where 是 in which,
例如下面這句
The house where he lives is next to an office building.
之前高中上到這部份時 老師強調並不是所以 地方
的關代就是where 還是要分析句子才能決定
希望對你有幫助 :)
