I often get asked the same questions: Why did you leave Hong Kong? Why do you do what you do? What motivates and inspires you? My response is always the same...
I grew up in a very ordinary family. Dad was a chef, mom was a housewife. We were told to study hard, get good grades and go to a top university. Only then would we find a decent job, be successful and live happily ever after. Like any obedient Chinese child, I did as my parents expected of me. I guess with the foundation built, life hasn't been too bad. But human beings are never satisfied, are they? I wanted more – bigger returns – not just monetary returns but things that meant deeper.
So rather than hanging with my peers, I chose to hang out with people who were totally different from me. I chose to relocate to a foreign country and to learn everything from scratch again. Leaving one's comfort zone is never easy but doing so allowed me to see things from different perspectives. When I had settled down a bit more, I chose to spend time with those who were much more successful than me. Despite my inferior and insecure feelings, I wanted to learn from them, to learn how they work, to learn how they think, to know what makes them successful.
The more I got to know this group of people, the more I picked up their attitudes and values. They also shared with me the right way to run a business and the qualities of being a good entrepreneur. They pointed out my strengths and weaknesses, things I failed to see myself. They taught me how to come up with solutions, to learn from my mistakes, and encouraged me to go further. Now, I have a steady business, am doing things I really like and at the same time am able to contribute forward to the community. I'm thankful for all their guidance and advice, for this has made me what I am today. Lately I've asked them, “Why? Why did you take the effort to mentor me without expecting anything in return?” They said, “We saw the potential in you, just that you didn’t have the right platform and environment. So we provided you with it, as simple as that. You don't have to say thank you or pay us back anything. In the future, when you see someone who has potential, just do what we did for you and there will be more shining stars in this world.” In Chinese, we call these people [貴人], 'noblemen'. They are definitely my noblemen. And to pay it forward, I'm now doing the same what they've done for me – sharing my experiences and opportunities with others so that one day they too will shine!
