====================
Dushanbe🚖

Snow was fun until it became a blizzard and blocked the mountain passage on our border crossing day from Uzbekistan to Tajikistan😠
The intended border crossing route was from Samarkand to Panjakent border (40 mins USD$2 mini bus) then USD$10pp from border to Dushanbe (5 hours)🚗
However, the day before departure it started to snow ❄ We arrived at the border crossing not realising the roads were closed! So we had to decide on an alternative route on the spot!
The other border (Tursunzoda border) crossing into Tajikistan requires bypassing the mountain (450km of windy road)⛰ which is another 9 hour car ride from the original boarder!!! Only then we can cross into Tajikistan and catch another taxi which will take another hour drive to our destination at Dushanbe😣
We haggled the trip fare from USD$100 to USD$55 for two👀 Then after the border crossing the Tajik man who was on the same car helped us to negotiate the taxi into Dushanbe from USD$5pp to USD$2.5pp so we won't need to pay the tourist price😬
When we arrive in the outskirts of Dushanbe, the Uzbek man in the same car did us a favour and asked his friend to give us a ride to our hostel🏠
We were exhausted by the time we reached our hostel at 10.30pm😩 Devastatingly we learnt that the original route reopened 9 hours ago which was only 3 hours after we left the place 😰
Apparently it was only 5KM of the mountain pass that was closed off due to snow which they had promptly cleared.
We could have stayed at the boarder for 3 hours and travelled to Dushanbe in 5 hours. Instead we travelled for 10 hours on the long route😭
So the timeline of the day was:
Left hotel at 9.30AM and was going to walk 3KM to shared taxi stop🚏 Met this lovely old taxi driver offered to take us there for free! 👴 He was hoping we could pay him to go to the border but we declined the offer. He didn’t charge us anything for the short ride 😅
Got on the mini van at 10AM and off to the border with the locals. We arrived at the boarder at 10:30am only find that the route is closed due to snow❄️
Snapped some photos of the boarder gate and the border guard came and demanded that I step out of the car😠 He then took my phone and looked at the photos and deleted ones he deemed inappropriate📸 First time getting treated like this. Thankfully he didn't see my camera nor he knew the deleted photos goes to a "bin" section in phones😂
Negotiated the fare by 10.40AM and finally got our last shared taxi passenger at 11.30AM!!! These people were at Panjakent (Tajikistan) already but bcz the route to Dushanbe was closed, they have to take the alternate long route 😲
The other drivers and the passengers then collectively touched their faces with both hands and mumbled sth. I think they praying for safe journey🙏 They did this everytime we start the drive again.
We did not anticipate this whole journey was going to take this long!!! The driver even did a wrong turn, weather was so cold he had to go borrow hot water from shops to defrost his engine. The car here runs on gas so everytime he tops up we have to get off the car into the freezing cold 😑
We didn't reach the border till 8.30PM😱 Poor York who sat in the middle seat got a really sore ass...
We successfully crossed both borders around 9.30PM and the two men in the car waited for us and made sure we crossed safely❤
After an intense fare negotiation, we finally arrived in outer Dushanbe city at 10.15PM (13KM from our hostel) and the man's friend gave us a ride 🚙
What a journey just to cross the border!! The hotel dude said we should've just waited and the road may open in a few hours/days time. We were not prepared to gamble with this route opening time as we were on a tight schedule😝
Ps. Food along the journey was SHIT and expensive 🙄 Didn't even bother taking a picture...

Train to the west
Instead of staying at a hostel, I slept on an overnight train on my first night in Uzbekistan. This country doesn't look big on the map, but a train ride from Tashkent to the ancient Silk Road city Khiva still takes 15 hours, and overnight train is the best option to save daytime and hotel expenses.
The train itself is like a world from 50 years ago. The wooden and painted interior look aged. More surprisingly, the hot water barrel in the car was fueled by coal! Most passengers were seniors or children, waiting in the hot and stuffy car for the train to move and bring in breezes. My up-berth neighbor happened to be two Uzbek young men, and one of them spoke decent English. With his help I was able to interact with other people on the train.
What happened afterward was totally unexpected - instead of quickly falling asleep, people started taking food out and share with others. The old lady in the opposite berth took out bread, eggs, cucumbers and tomatoes, and the young men up-berth brought out two boxes full of grilled steak. They also brought hot water from the coal-fueled barrel mentioned earlier to make tea. I shared the bread I bought before broading as well. Suddenly the sleeper car was returned into a feast!
All the conversation was in Uzbek, which I didn't understand, but I tried to listen carefully and see if I can catch some patterns from this unfamiliar language. They occasionally brought me into the conversation with the help of the English speaking young man. They asked me, are you traveling alone? I said yes, and they followed, no translator with you? I answered no. They were amazed.
Afterward they exchanged their passport with me. (It seems like even Uzbek citizens have to travel with their passport in hand.) They were fascinated by the number of countries I've been to, and I stared at an old lady's Uzbek passport, imaging the day when it replaced her Soviet Union passport.
Strangers got along quickly on the train. The two young men then brought out one bottle of vodka - I guess they'd been waiting for a right timing to do that. Although not a alcohol person, I compromised and agreed to take a little. They seemed to understand that, and were kind enough to prepare a full cup of coke on the side, to let me alleviate the spiciness after taking the vodka.
While still striving to learn something from their Uzbek conversation, jet lag in combination with the alcohol made me really sleepy prior to 10pm. They understood that and let me sleep while everyone else was still having fun. The train was very smooth, and its slight movements helped my sleep. I got a wonderful 8-hour uninterrupted sleep on the train!
The feast continued next morning with the leftover from the previous night. The train was still running in an uninhabited desert. What's different during the daytime is, many vendors went back and forth between cars, selling various items from food, clothes, toys to apparels.
This train trip made my time in Uzbekistan (even before getting to any destination) - train here is more than a vehicle or a lodge. It's a good place to build friendships with locals. There are still another 16 overnight train rides on my trip, and I now know what to do: I will always get food before boarding, and make friends with the food.

In the morning, there are the same 9 persons in the car, no laughter and noise of chatting; but stillness.
Ren-ming:「Because of parting, I wonder whether you are thinking about the these days we get along?」
Mr. Wolf:「Yes,how do you know what I am thinking?」
Mr. Wolf drived the car to the gas station near high way, almost close the border of Czech.
「Most driver come here always go to Czech too, so leave you here.」
After take off baggage, no one knows how to say good bye for the real and impressive relationship, so everyone hug Mr. Wolf tightly to substitute words and thankful.
Tears drop down from Mr. Wolf’s eyes:「you just like my family, thank you.」
Everyone feel toughful and also tears drop down from eyes.
------------------------------------
11:30 am, we separated into two teams hitchhiking to Prague, Czech Republic.
Frist team try to use body language to communicate with driver who can not speak English, but we still share the meaning of our challenge hard between the 3 hours drive, not easy but have a lot fun.
Radim先生愉快地說:「I feel I'm a new man」。
Second team get on the car until 3:00 pm.
Mr.Radim said that he already drived for 250km, need to take a rest.
On the way to Prague, Mr.Radim stop on roadside twice, and we provide massage service.
In the process, the facial expression on Mr.Radim from pain to joy, everyone feel a sense of accomplishment.
And Mr.Radim say:「I feel I'm a new man」.
When we enter Czech Republic, there is no stamp and entry inspection, only the flag on the roadside, it’s feel not real.
7:00 pm, we bring together under the Charles Bridge.
After rest, we ask ladies who sat on the chair, want to know about the direction residential, ladies point to the local bar, and suggested that we may go to ask.
One of the stuff who is a lady and can speak in English, help us to communicate with other stuff, one hour later, we identified a place to stay tonight-a massage studio.
We follow the ladies who provided us accommodation that night, even if our communication without language, but we can use guitar, singing, smiling, joy, and close each other on the rainy days.
Děkuji

Slk
