There was discussion today in the Legislative Yuan regarding the move by the #PRC to bypass the #HongKong Legislative Council and force through the #NationalSecurityLaw, which dramatically limits freedom of speech and judicial independence. In #Taiwan, there is cross-party consensus to denounce this move by Beijing.

Regardless of party affiliation, government and civil society in Taiwan are united in support for the people of Hong Kong and a shared appreciation of democracy. The Executive Yuan has drawn up a humanitarian assistance action plan for Hong Kong, furthering plans and measures to facilitate the #residence, #shelter and #care of its people. The measures will be agreed by the Mainland Affairs Council in collaboration with other ministries, agencies and the private sector. All necessary funds are to be allocated.

#China has reneged on its promise to leave Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms unchanged for 50 years, and this state of affairs is worsening and poses a threat to regional peace and security. Taiwan will work with its like-minded partners around the world to support Hong Kong and its people. We will not look on as freedom, democracy and human rights are rolled back in Hong Kong.
