Guandu Nature Park
The only remaining large tracks of paddy field in Guandu Plain, Taipei City comes under the spotlight in the 2017 Guandu International Nature Art Festival “With Paths Crisscrossing.” Paths crisscrossing are the roads intersecting the fields. The century-old paddy field that used to serve as the major granary has been a witness to the development of this city. The crisscrossing roads and irrigation canals reveal the changes over time and human interference across the generations. Rural nostalgia as it is, With Paths Crisscrossing takes a step further. Through artists-in-residence, volunteer involvement, local walking tour and other activities, the Festival attempts to sort out many strata of the historical meaning of paddies in urban Taipei or even to explore what role they will play in future development. Last but not the least, the Festival hopes to inspire participants to reflect from different perspectives on their own relationship with the landscape as its structure changes over time.
This film records the seven participatory artists and their artworks created in Guandu Nature Park. The artistic styles and ideas might be different, but they all manifest their care for the environment and interpretations of the theme "With Paths Crisscrossing."
The transformed Guandu International Nature Art Festival has focused on Listening, Connection and Symbiosis during 2016-2018. The theme of the 2016 Festival, Based on A True Story, highlighted comprehending as the first step toward land care by reading messages and stories about and from Nature. With Paths Crisscrossing aims to help people perceive the connections between their inner selves with the outer nature as the paths crisscrossing the fields do. The ultimate goal is to help viewers feel that they belong to the land and find their place in it. Admittedly, an art project alone cannot guarantee a substantial or dramatic transformation. However, it will definitely bring people from all corners to meet in the way that interweaves their stories in the web of life. What would the sensational surges bring? This is something we hope to discover through the power of art.
