For today’s house concert, I wanted to share with you both of the nocturnes from Chopin’s op. 27.
To me, this set of nocturnes conveys an incredible balance between darkness and light - to state the obvious, the first is in C-sharp minor, while the second is in the parallel major: D-flat (the enharmonic equivalent). The first nocturne is filled with mystery and a haunting darkness, combined with a stark sense of lonely pain. I’m reminded of a short story by O. Henry, titled The Last Leaf, where an old artist saves the life of a young neighboring artist who is suffering from pneumonia, by spending a night drawing a leaf on the wall with great realism. As a result, he himself contracts pneumonia and dies shortly after. The selfless nature of the old artist feels all too real, when we are moved by the scenes around the world of the countless health care workers risking themselves on the front lines, just to attempt to save as many lives as possible. However, the nocturne ends with rays of hope and sunlight, which leads perfectly into the second nocturne, one that is deeply consoling and subliminally beautiful. Goodnight.
