2001年來到台灣在榮民總醫院跟天母消防隊實習，基本上那是場「火熱」的洗禮。我爸爸媽媽阿嬤都跟我們講台語，所以我來的時候只會3句非常非常基本的中文。 我所認知的台灣都是從小聽爸媽講的故事，我自以為對台灣很了解，但一到這裡被文化差異徹底衝擊洗禮之後，才知道完全不是想像中那回事。
2001: When I worked as an EMT at Tianmu Fire Station and intern at Veterans General Hospital in Taipei. It was my baptism by fire (sometimes, literally). I arrived in Taiwan knowing only three basic words in Mandarin, I thought I knew Taiwanese culture based off of the stories my parents would tell me, but I was in for a culture shock.

非常感謝這些超讚的朋友，陪伴我成長、讓我避免菜鳥會犯的低級錯誤、教我髒話，哈哈！ 我很懷念那段台灣初體驗的日子。
Thankfully, I had these wonderful people to show me the ropes (heh heh) and rescue me from making many rookie mistakes. (And also, for teaching me tons of bad words in Taiwanese.) I’ll never forget this experience!

【緊張的劉鶴 l per day or today? 】

川普昨天在白宮橢圓辦公室，給了中國國務院副總理劉鶴一個震撼教育。

從白宮The White House公佈的影片中，劉鶴顯得非常緊張，他結結巴巴地說we will five billion （他甚至忘了放動詞），然後改口five millions，然後改口five millions beans。
這時候旁邊傳譯看不下去了，大聲補充說：five million tons of soybeans。（她加了tons，把beans改為soybeans）。
川普很高興，說：Five million tons of soybeans! Wow!

原本這個尷尬的英語教學片段到此要告一段落了，大家都鬆了一口氣，想不到劉鶴此時神來一筆又加了兩個字（根據中國的說法是一個字）：per day (每天)。
川普大喜，馬上接著說：Per day. That's going to make our famers very happy. That's a lot of soybeans. （每天。我們的農夫會超開心。超多大豆的！）

後續的新聞大家都看到了。到底是「今天買五百萬噸」還是「每天買五百萬噸」，這當然差很多。

我看了好幾次，說實話，劉鶴講得很不清楚（或是很沒自信），但比較接近today，而且他說這個字的時候，右手往地上指了一下，比較類似現在或今天的意思。

但川普第一時間聽成per day，也重複說per day，劉鶴旁邊的幕僚跟傳譯卻沒有當場禮貌性指正或確認，那就是失職了。

事實上，昨天的座位安排，就對劉鶴很不友善。
川普有張大桌子，雙手很舒服地放在桌上。而劉鶴只有一張椅子，沒有桌子，看起來沒有任何防禦（unguarded）。
所有人（美方跟中方的官員）圍繞著川普，只有川普有氣派的桌子。
氣勢高下立判。
劉鶴的幕僚要打屁股，為什麼沒有在會前先確定座次安排？搞得自己的老闆一進場就像是小臣子。
身為幕僚要切記：Never embarrass your boss.

我在美國去過好幾個總統圖書館，裡面都有Oval Office。事實上辦公室的另外一面，就有舒服的沙發。美國總統會在那邊跟外賓並排對談，看起來就比較沒有以下對上的晉見感。

這只是個外交的花邊新聞，但implications很深，大家不妨參考看看。

順便簡單介紹一下劉鶴生平。
他今年67歲（剛過生日），是習近平的重要財經幕僚（但沒有外交背景），曾取得哈佛大學John Kennedy School碩士。這並不是他第一次見川普。
