Tonight's #SentuhanHarapan is already the second last episode.
Tonight we will bring you to Kampung Karangpatihan in Ponorogo, East Java. This episode has been one of the most emotionally challenging for me. As I'm typing this, im recalling my interviews with these innocent mentally challenged and extremely poor disadvantaged community and it saddens me to think I may never meet them again. In Ponorogo, they are called the Tunagrahita people.
Doing this episode made me realise the lack of empathy and humanity that are in some of us that dehumanise people who are different from us, who lack the mental capability. There's so much I want to share about what happens behind the scenes, in between takes but I guess that will take another long post.
But my experience with the villagers of Kampung Karangpatihan has been exceptional. Can you imagine within 100 metres of the houses there, there are about 3 to 4 mentally ill villagers. And that's why this Kampung is known to the outside world as Kampung Idiot.
As a host, I felt the layers of discrimination in this story are so deep that it wrenches my heart every single day I was there💔. There's so much I need to share with you.
