Known for their Vegetarian Pan Mee, Vegeteh Restaurant is not new in mainland- it has strong presence in Butterworth and now, expanding to Bukit Mertajam. The branch at Bukit Mertajam just got started last October and has been serving the vegetarian community in town. The menu is casual and friendly- with many options suitable for all age range. Not only noodles but the place serves Western choices, classic stir fry meat-free dishes at unbeatable prices. Apart from the excellent food quality, we also found ourselves enjoying the food at a comfortable, air-conditioned space. You should definitely check out this place whether you are practicing plant-based diet.

【#不同凡飨】两位山东人都郁和杜士贵,原本在家乡完全不认识,却有缘在他乡遇故知,到马来西亚求学后认识彼此,结为好友。
每逢聚会,他们必定一起切磋厨艺,水饺、油爆大虾、奶白鱼汤都是他们印象中“不同凡飨”的家乡味。虽然厨艺与食材无法与大厨媲美,可每一口都是对乡愁最好的慰籍。
两人一边包水饺,一边聊家乡美景,就是最快乐的时刻。山东是座热情的城市,每片山水、每座城镇巧妙融合现代与历史,充满“好客山东”的魅力。

Two Shandong individuals, Du Yu and Du Shigui did not know each other at all back in their hometown. But they were destined to be acquainted with each other in another place. While furthering their studies in Malaysia, they got to know each other and became good friends.
At every get-together, they must delve into their cooking skills together and learn from each other. Dumplings, fried prawns and milky-white fish soup are all hometown flavors that are "no mediocre hometown epicurean" as far as their impressions can attest to. Although the cooking skills and ingredients cannot match that of the chef, but each bite represents the best consolation to their homesickness.
The two of them prepare dumplings and chat about the beauty of their hometown which is the happiest moment. Shandong is a passionate warm city where every landscape and every town that ingenuously blends modernity with history, depicting the full charm of "hospitable Shandong".
Like the famous scenic spot of Daming Lake, the vista is beautiful throughout all the four seasons. People go there to relax and appreciate the blooming lotus which is aesthetically pleasing to their eyes. Alternatively, one may climb Mount Taishan or Mount Tai, the foremost peak amongst the five major mountains of China, and feel the overwhelming aura of its majesty.
In this issue, we follow host Jane Ng to make 3-in-1 fresh vegetarian dumplings and partake the fabulous friendship between the two overseas studying Shandong students who had met in some faraway place beyond their own hometown.

Dango Jiru or Dago Jiru is a Traditional dumpling soup from many prefectures in Japan. Depending on prefecture, it is called differently. For instance in Ōita it is called Dango Jiru and in Kumamoto it is called Dago Jiru, etc... The shape of dumplings differs from house to house. Some people take time to stretch out the dumplings into long Udon-like noodle shape. Some people make it into flat round shape. Some people just tear it into the soup. Moreover, some people put chicken and vegetables. Most people use Taro potato, Daikon radish, and Gobo (burdock root) but they are not a must. Please take it easy and try it out in the way you like!
Fun to make with kids as well 😉
FYI: You can use any Dashi product. I used this one.

How to Make Dango Jiru (Dumpling Miso Soup) Vegan Recipe
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 30min
Number of servings: 2~3
Ingredients
1 US cup (120g) all purpose flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 US cup (60ml) water
200g (7oz.) potato (taro potato)
50g (1.7oz.) carrot
50g (1.7oz.) Shiitake mushrooms
2.5 US cup (600ml) water
5g (1&2/3tsp.) Dashi powder *I recommend RIKEN Kombu Dashi Powder https://amzn.to/31o8bx8
2 tbsp. Awase Miso
chopped green onions
Directions:
1. Let's make Dango first. Put flour and salt in a bowl. Add water little by little then mix well. Make a bite-size Dango (small flat round dumplings) then cover with damp cloth and rest while cutting vegetables.
2. Quarter slice potato. Half slice carrot. Remove the stems and slice Shiitake mushrooms.
3. In a large pot, put water and Dashi. Add vegetables and cook on medium for about 7 minutes until soft.
4. Add Dango and cook on medium for about 5 minutes until cooked through.
5. Stop the heat and add Miso (dilute with cooking liquid). Then cook for a few seconds (do not boil over) until hot.
6. Serve in a bowl and garnish with chopped green onions.

材料 Ingredients
150g 新豬肉 150g Omnipork
15g 亁木耳 15g Dried black fungus
30g 乾冬菇 (4隻) 30g Dried Shiitake mushroom (x4)
2片厚切姜 (拍鬆) 2 thick slices of ginger (gently crushed)
三個紅蔥頭 3 shallots
1湯匙老抽 1 TBS Dark soy sauce
1 茶匙麻油 1 tsp sesame oil
1 隻雞蛋 1 egg
30g 馬蹄粉加3湯匙水 30g Water chestnut powder mix with 3 TBS water
30g 粉絲 30g Bean vermicelli
新豬肉調味料 Omnipork marinade
1茶匙生抽 1 tsp soy sauce
1茶匙生粉 1 tsp potato starch
1/4 茶匙胡椒粉 1/4 tsp ground pepper
1茶匙麻油 1 tsp sesame oil
250ml 素清湯 250ml vegetable stock
1500ml 水 1500ml water
食用配料 Optional condiments
白胡椒粉 White ground pepper
浙醋 Red vinegar
