God is all Light and all Good
“This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5 WEB)
Now that my daughter is in hospital, I can write about the verse above. When bad things happen, do you blame God?
“I prayed for protection. Why is she allowed to get bitten by insects? Why didn’t you prevent the insect bite from swelling? Why?” I could have easily gone down that path of trying to reason out things that I can’t even begin to understand in the spiritual realm.
However, when sickness, accidents or poverty strikes, it is not because God is testing us. The devil is the one who causes death and destruction.
God is light—He is all good. Every virtuous trait is His. His heart is love and everything He does for us who believe in Him is good.
“For Yahweh is good. His loving kindness endures forever, his faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalms 100:5 WEB)
When the devil attacks, don’t say that it is God. The Lord is working to turn everything around for your good.
“We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose...What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:28, 31-32 WEB)
The flesh will make you question God, but the reborn spirit knows that He is worthy to be praised.
If God sent His precious Son to redeem you from sickness, pain and poverty, why would He afflict you with them?
Let’s stop making up smart-sounding excuses to justify why God is causing calamities to happen to you. This is not God testing you, but you are coming out with a testimony.
The New Testament does talk about a type of testing but that is talking about persecution for your faith—when people treat you badly for being a Christian. But you getting afflicted by sickness, poverty or depression is not God testing you.
“Beloved, don’t be astonished at the fiery trial which has come upon you, to test you, as though a strange thing happened to you. But because you are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory you also may rejoice with exceeding joy. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed; because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. On their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified. For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil doer, or a meddler in other men’s matters. But if one of you suffers for being a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this matter.” (1 Peter 4:12-16 WEB)
Like Paul said, if you are persecuted for being a murderer, thief or evildoer, don’t claim that you are being persecuted for being a Christian. Persecution for your faith means that others insult and bully you because you believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The other type of “test” is the opportunity for us to test out (to use) what we believe, in real-life situations.
“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.” (James 1:2-3 WEB)
For example, you learnt that God is good and that His grace is supplied to you apart from works. If you believe that, you will apply it in the way you live—you will test it out in real-life situations. Instead of blaming God, you will place your trust in Him to deliver you from harm.
“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers.” (3 John 1:2 WEB)
In every situation, believe that God is good and that He is all light. You are coming out of that situation by His mighty power at work in your life!
Some believers are confused about God and still see Him as sometimes angry and sometimes loving. That is such a hindrance to bold faith. Understand the four gospels correctly, through the lens of Grace: https://bit.ly/understandeveryparable

Who is the one Testing your Faith?
“Instead of your shame you will have double. Instead of dishonor, they will rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land, they will possess double. Everlasting joy will be to them.” (Isaiah 61:7 WEB)
There is this religious belief in the body of Christ that “God allows us to go through sufferings to test our faith”.
I’m not sure whether they have this image of God sitting there and watching as if to find out if we succeed or not.
God as an omniscient Being already knows the level we are at. He also knows what mistakes we will make, before we even thought of committing them.
There is no need for Him to test us, as if He doesn’t already know!
“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (James 1:2-4 WEB)
The kind of testing is not for God to know, but it is to provide us with real-life opportunities to use our faith.
The Greek word for testing is “dokimion” which can also mean “proving”. Sufferings are opportunities to use our faith and grow stronger through them.
So we are the ones testing our faith, not God!
It’s like how you can read all about bodybuilding, but if you don’t go to the gym and actually do the exercise, you won’t actually get stronger.
Reading teaches you the principles of exercise and how to do it right. But actually doing it is what increases your muscle strength.
The Scriptures teach you the way of faith, and sufferings allow you to test that faith in real-life, proving that you really believe what God’s word says, and also increasing your spiritual strength.
Sufferings happens at times because of our own mistakes and we have to deal with their earthly consequences. Other times, the devil instigates attacks, adding fuel to the fire.
God allows these to happen up to certain safe limits for us, to perfect our character and correct our wrong beliefs.
When a skillful refiner purifies silver, he has to attentively watch the silver, and take it out of the fire at the right time.
Take it out too soon and it isn’t fully purified.
Wait until it’s too late and the whole silver is lost.
“Take away the dross from the silver, and material comes out for the refiner;” (Proverbs 25:4 WEB)
Even amidst your fiery suffering, God knows the exact moment to pull you out from it, so that you reap the full benefits of the experience without being throughly damaged.
This is His appointed time of deliverance—perfectly calculated, not one moment too late or too soon.
When you emerge out of the circumstance, our God graciously restores you for what you went through.
Instead of shame and dishonor, you’ll receive double portion of blessings and rewards!
This happened to Job—he received double in quantity for his lost herds, and double in quality for his lost sons and daughters.
Job may have been 70 years old before his trial started, as he was given an additional 140 years of life to enjoy after the trial.
The days of suffering are short compared to the years of blessedness.
“So Yahweh blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand female donkeys. He had also seven sons and three daughters. He called the name of the first, Jemimah; and the name of the second, Keziah; and the name of the third, Keren Happuch. In all the land were no women found so beautiful as the daughters of Job. Their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. After this Job lived one hundred forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, to four generations. So Job died, being old and full of days.” (Job 42:12-17 WEB)
We become enriched through tough seasons in our lives. If you don’t go through any trials, you can’t reach new levels of blessedness.
Flow with God’s times and seasons. Trust that He is preparing you for new levels!

It was not until a few years ago when he saw the photos of suffering children in war-torn Syria that he started painting children.
“I have been exploring my inner-self through my paintings in recent years, then I realised that I had not been painting those around me, for I had actually been painting “myself”; the Syrian children are almost like a part of me, what had happened to them are almost like part of my own experiences. I don’t mean the actual events, but the spiritual connections between us. The older I’ve become, the more I live like a child.” He smiles shyly as he spoke those words: “Is it a little embarrassing to compare myself, the middle-aged man to a child…” We both laughed, not at his so-called “embarrassment” but his willingness to expose his most intimate feelings and naivety.
“I think I now have a better understanding of this world and have realised how helpless I am in this vast universe.” As stated in the Bible, the devil roams the grounds in search for men he could devour; Lu Xun writes in his “Diary of a Madman” that everyone is looking for the opportunity to devour others under the covers of morality. He sees the charms and temptations of “evil”, which make this world such a wicked place! But of course, there are positive things on this earth, like the small yet precious “virtues” that so desperately needed to be passed on.
Clothing offers one confidence and satisfaction, whilst mobile phones provide convenience. Many jobs are beneficial to the men kind, but he often askes himself: “What does an artist has to offer the world?” On certain levels, art has been reduced to the lowest stratum possible, for when art is discussed in the so-called “sophisticated environments” around the world, it is merely about “numbers” and its decorative purposes on the walls.
