About the work
《Summer Morning Rain》is a Max/MSP-assisted composition for Piano, Soundscape, and Computer-Generated Sound (stereo, surround, 5.1 or ~8 channels). This work was influenced by Dr. Jean Eichelberger Ivey's《Skaniadaryo》for Piano and Tape (1976).
In 《Summer Morning Rain》 the pianist improvises in the spirit of 《Skaniadaryo》, then uses Max/MSP to develop contradictory voices in real-time. Live and processed piano together achieve a new composition using modern technology to convey the concepts of the older work: a contemporary reworking of an historical electronic music composition. The composer hopes that with this new work, the spirit and context of early electronic music will be continued and preserved.
This work is dedicated to Dr. Jean Eichelberger Ivey who founded the Electronic Music Studio of the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University 50 years ago. Congratulations to the Peabody Computer Music Department on its 50th anniversary this year (2019-2020).
About the composer
Sandra Tavali Wuan-chin Li
Of the Siraya people (Aborigine in Taiwan), Sandra Tavali Wuan-chin Li is a former keyboardist of the well-known metal band "Chthonic". She is the composer for the TV documentary "Unknown Island" produced by the Discovery Channel. Her musical works crossover between computer music, EDM, classical visual art, film, and documentaries. The sound track she re-scored for Peter Tscherkassky's 《L'Arrivee》was premiered at 2018 IMD-Internationales-musikinstitut Darmstadt. and will present at ManiFeste-2019, IRCAM, Paris in June.
She earned the Master of Music degree in Computer Music from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where she studied with Dr. Geoffrey Wright. Her research 《A Performer's Musicological Research in Performing Interactive Computer Music》was invited to present in ICMC 2004. Her compositions "Duet in Autumn" for Max/MSP and YAMAHA Disklavier was featured at WOCMAT 2018 and NYCEMF 2018; "Ban Shan" was featured at the International Computer Music Conference-ICMC 2018, Korea, New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival -NYCEMF 2017, klingt gut! Symposium on Sound, Hamburg, Germany 2016; "Dirge" was featured at ICMC 2015 (USA), "River, Rim and the Earth" was featured at NYCEMF and New York Philharmonic Biennial 2016, selected at ISMIR 2015 (Spain), "The Wind Bloweth Where It Listeth" was featured at WOCMAT-IRCAM 2016. She is currently the curator of Guling Street Avant-Garde Theatre Taipei, also a faculty member of Fu-Jen University.
